Chest X-rays for lung cancer do not save lives: study

LOL!! Now they realize huh? They just DON'T give you ridiculous free doses of radiation but also could cause CANCER on you in the long run. Same thing with those horrible and barbaric yearly Pap Smears. Too invasive and harmful.

There is nothing worse than PREVENTIVE MEDICINE. The best way to make a buck by someone healthy SICK.

Not me though, I REFUSE to go to any doctor unless I'm very sick with real symptoms and all.

Ooooppss!! I meant to say: by making someone healthy SICK. (-_-)

Womens cancer screening methods make me mental. In this day and age can they not come up with a way of screening for beast cancer that doesnt involve squeezing the twins flat between two steel plates until they beg for mercy?

You can bet if men had to stick their crown jewels between those plates and have them squeezed flat once a year theyd come up with a new screening method pretty damned quick!

Nicky, that sounds like heaven compared to a prostrate examination ...

BlueWitch, completely agree with you, I never have any of those tests. My gyno believes in kanpo, I am so lucky to have him and we always have great discussions.

So let's take a look at today's health care: The job of a doctor is primarily to diagnose disease, treat symptoms and make referrals to other specialists for surgery, lab tests or other procedures. (Good doctors also help educate patients, but that's the exception, not the norm.) Patients don't go see a doctor unless there's something wrong with them. When they do see the doctor, the doctor's job is to patch them up, make the pain go away, make the swelling go down, stitch up the cut, prescribe drugs or whatever is immediately necessary.

Think about it... the doctor only makes money when people are sick. Drug companies only make money when people need treatment for disease. And most people are only really interested in their health when something goes wrong. I think there's something terribly misguided about this entire process, both in terms of what patients are doing and what doctors are doing. So what could be a better system?

Imagine a world of health consultants Suppose we had a system, in some imaginary society, where there weren't doctors -- instead, there were health consultants or "healers." The job of the healer would be to keep you healthy, not to patch you up when you've got a disease. In fact, in this imaginary society, every person would see a healer on a regular basis, working with them like a health coach to avoid and prevent chronic disease. I am dreaming again...

We've got to sever the corrupt connection between government and industry, and create some honest regulatory agencies that are actually going to do something to protect the consumer. Today, we are far from that. In fact, it's nowhere in sight. But that's where we have to start if we're going to have a chance at improving the health situation.

@Nicky, Foxie

Same old same old, where there is preventive medicine, there is tons of money to be made. Moreover, fat incentives given to doctors in order to encourage more people to have regular screenings...like the extremely RARE cervical cancer for example. Encouraging young girls and even virgins when it's been proven that abnormal cells are present when the body is still growing. and it doesn't mean that Cancer is present. They tend to over misdiagnose women with "abnormal cells" ..one thing leading to another and ultimately you get a cone biopsy that not only is really painful but could scar your cervix permanently, even leaving you unable to conceive children. Did you know that the Lab industries make millions every year based on those just-in-case biopsies?! It's a huge business. Still, those pelvic/pap smears are totally barbaric and primitive. Too much trauma and humiliation. Not worth it. You would think that after 100 hundred years they would come up with a better way to examine female organs without being so invasive and hurtful. Men are suffering the same crap with their horrible prostate exams. Having all kinds of stuff shoved into their rectums. Jeez!

Anyways, Preventive Medicine aka "regular unnecessary screenings" are more harmful that helpful. Same with having X-rays in EXCESS and those CT scans and MRI. Everything gives you tons of radiation that could REALLY make you sick, actually. Don't go to the doctor if you don't need to. Please. When you get SICK, then you go, but try to voice your concerns because it is YOUR body and the doctor is NOT your god. Your body, your decision.

by the way,

My baby #4 (girl) was born natural way (4 hours of labor!) just like the other 3, but she weighed 3,250 grams, something that concerned the doctor at first who thought that I might have a c-section because of how "big" it was...I was like.."Uhh NO, I'm gonna have this baby my way, ok? If she doesn't come out after 24 hours, then go ahead and cut me open. Husband held his ground as well. No surgical procedure, period. Unless we had a real emergency. No pain medication as usual , just natural pain waves and lots of patience.....hurts like you just wanna die, but it's worth it. baby was born healthy with zero complications.

Ok, so chest x-rays are not so great for early lung cancer, but that's not the only illness they are used for. Wikipedia lists Pneumonia, Pneumothorax, Interstitial lung disease (including TB), Congestive heart failure, Bone fracture, and Hiatal hernia as problems caught out by x-rays. Among these, tuberculosis is a good enough reason to have regular screenings. Even if it doesn't improve your survival rate it can save lives of people around you. If you think that TB is a thing of the past and no longer a concern you might be in for a surprise.

ElBuda: Kanpo really helped me with a number of problems, glad to hear it helped you too. I started studying it actually. I wished more docs would prescribe kanpo. My doc always has too much time for me to to analyze everything. The good thing with kanpo was that I hardly ever got relapses. My funny doc always has some kanpo ready in his drawer for hangovers, cracks me up.

I'm a man but I know what you mean as I had to do it myself (on my right one only, and I have a really flat, fat free chest). It hurts like hell. This happened after a stupid mistake in archery. I got struck by a yumi string, and the whole right side got as hard as a rock. It healed by itself in about 6 months, but nevertheless it was much better after hearing it's no problem...

Therefore, although I suffered during it, this test (combined with ultrasonic) was what brought me peace of mind.
