On Saturday, Cordero’s 18th day in the intensive care unit, blood clots in his right leg were inhibiting circulation. The blood thinners he was given for the clotting issues were affecting his blood pressure and causing bleeding in his intestines, Kloots said. That led to the decision to amputate the leg.
