Confusion reigns.
Exactly.
Experts went from believing there was a vaccine that protects people from becoming infected, but in reality, to their dismay, it doesn't.
True. It is obvious to see the motives behind the scenes.

COVID-19 is still killing hundreds of Americans each day, but is not nearly as dangerous as it was last fall and winter.
Sounds pretty safe to me.

Is this supposed to mean that it was not a big problem? 15% fatality rate?

The scientific estimate is a valid conclusion from the data, not just a wild guess but something that requires a methodology to do, with intervals of confidence that support the validity of those estimates for example.

and here is just one country that shows vaccines are working, saving people from long covid and death,
no vaccines are not meant to make you immune to catching covid, they do help your body produce proteins to block the virus from attaching to cells, if the body can quickly recognise the virus it can fight it faster .
basically what vaccines have been doing for the last 100yrs.
here come the anti vaxxers with their anti science delusions and excuses 3 2 1

So, a cautious optimism that the worst already passed and that the end of the pandemic may be at sight. Vigilance still important, so any change for the worse can be quickly identified and measures against the threat used opportunely.
A crystal clear benefit from the vaccines that many still want to believe are "useless".

That would be the opposite instead of the huge misrepresentation antivaxxer groups have tried to make with the covid vaccines, they are comparably as effective as the previous vaccines.
How does this disprove the fact that a vaccinated person is 6 times less likely to die from covid than someone that has not been vaccinated? there is no hysteria in the response from the health care professionals that helped prevent countless deaths but still could not do that for literally millions of people that died because of the disease. Those millions may be
How does this work in your mind? people vaccinated only get a milder form of the virus and that is why they die 6 times less? because how else would the variant have any importance then in the difference? people are protected very effectively by the vaccines, the opposite of what antivaxxer groups endlessly said would happen.

What dismay? most vaccines do not prevent infection, there is a reason these are not a SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, is a COVID vaccine. These vaccines being the same as the general situation for previous vaccines is not a cause of dismay, if anything it was the most likely result. Specially since variants were predicted to appear since before the vaccines were even developed and the real reason for dismay was that escape mutants would render immunity to previous variants (both in vaccinated or infected people) completely irrelevant. That didn't happen.
People systematically rejecting all and any scientific knowledge that do not fit with what they want to believe try very hard to misrepresent both the efficacy of the vaccine and the dangers of covid. their motives are obvious. It does not make any of those misrepresentations less false.
