The 1% has found that if you keep people stuffed with cheap (=unhealthy) food, you don't have to worry about revolt. Especially if everyone is to fat to move.

Right on. Let me add fruit juice and smoothie to your list. They are bad as well. They fooled me until I became diabetic. It is very important to maintain optimal bmi level at 25 to stay healthy. Eat variety of fruits and vegitable and stay away from junk food.

Businesses like to push the idea that choice is in the hands of consumers so their industry avoids regulations, but this doesn't apply to children, who get addicted to salt, sugar, fat combinations in junk food, and people without the financial means to purchase calories with higher nutritional value. The field of behavioural economics shows that few people really have free will, which is why so much money is spent on marketing. This suggests, after Adam Smith, that government should play an active role in regulating the excesses of the market. The study reported on here shows this is not occurring in the food and agriculture industries, likely because the regulators who should act on behalf of the people they represent instead work on behalf of corporations.

@globalwatcher a BMI of 25 is often considered the border between optimal and overweight, so generally you want to stay UNDER 25.

That being said, BMI is a very unreliable method for judging health and weight, especially considering that muscle raises your BMI, too.

As for the rest of the article, I'm a little confused as to how healthy food and unhealthy food can be up. Does that mean that most people are eating less "health-neutral" food? What does that mean?

Not sure what happened to the princess that said it 40yrs before Marie Antoinette was born. False attribution by one Author that disliked her.

Personally have adjusted my diet and basically avoided becoming disbetivy, got a healthy BMI, BFI and my blood pressure and blood tests are at optimum don't even exercise too much.

Agree soda, fruit juice and fruits have much sugar and calories, yes more people tend to et "healthier" foods. Example salads are good but add certain toppings and dressings and you quickly add on the unneeded calories, etc.

OTOH, our lifestyles often don't let us cook and we order out, eat precooked food etc. So yes we might try to eat healthier but than many think an extra junk meal oçcasso is OK.

Sure. This is just a general bench mark to stay healthy. There is a solid link between Obesity to cancer.

This is where US government is doing very poor. Our government needs to educate Americans a benefit of healthy living with less sugar and salt consumption. We do not find any fruit or vegitable juice less than 30 gm of sugar. So unhealthy.
