The transformation in the quality of life that a new kidney gives people living with kidney failure makes this work extremely important.
Although it is just one step forward on a long path, it holds out hope to the many many people living with failed kidneys, and their loved ones. As the numbers of people with failed kidneys grows year by year globally, particularly due to epidemic levels of diabetes, the need for an alternative to donated organs will keep on growing. Considering the cost of treating kidney patient, this is important for all of us, if health systems are to be financially viable in the future.
