To summarize, the loss of smell and taste should be taken as an indicator that the subject should self-quarantine immediately, to avoid spreading the disease.

One of my friends back at home in the States first caught on that she got the virus by this. She said the first day she couldn't taste or smell much so she isolated at home. The next 2-3 days she said it was pretty much the same as having the flu, this is when she was got tested and by the 6th day she was essentially completely recovered except for a slight lingering cough. By day 8 she was back at 100%, thank goodness. Apparently she was contacted and is in some sort of program to donate plasma?

She's the 4th person I know from home (Chicago area) to get it. Three are in their 30s and one was the first two's 6 year old daughter. All of them had a lost of taste/smell. All recovered relatively quickly and completely.

It's actually good that there's a somewhat unusual symptom coming along with a lot of cases. It should make it easier for people to take it seriously.
