I do not doubt any of the numbers given here. However, I expect the same response as to this as climate change. Which is to say, dismay and concern, but only of a level that gets pushed to the back of people's minds by the other things in their (our) daily lives.

Diesel engines have become very, very much cleaner over the last 30 years. Nevertheless, they have an inherent problem. They spew more particulates than other forms of internal combustion engines, as well as a higher percentage of chemical pollutants. More needs to be done to clean up diesels, and engines in general.

Well if 50% is diesel, then 50% is petrol, hm.. hard choice

I believe this is is why Germany and China are moving rapidly to EVs.
