Scientific advancement owns a huge debt to people like the volunteers that are described in the article, being spared from a disease because of genetic lottery is one thing, to feel a responsibility in helping those that have been less fortunate is something that do not happen automatically and is also worth a lot of praise.

As the article describes it is fortunate that several different factors appear to offer protection against Alzheimer, this means that even if one is too difficult to manipulate maybe others can be targets of medical interventions, or even a combination of several different ones, with limited effect on each but a significative therapeutic effect when all are manipulated together. Maybe in the near future a multifactorial treatment as in endocrinological diseases will become possible.
