The study states this:
While having worded it as being causative in the paragraph before it:
If marijuana is not causative, then it can't increase the chances of developing psychosis. It may increase the chances that psychosis will be observed in those who smoke every day, but the article itself points out that it can't be said that marijuana is the cause.

Um, because it's an intoxicant, so the logical comparison is with other legal intoxicants. We as society have accepted that people enjoy getting intoxicated, and it is something we allow, so when looking at introducing a new intoxicant into legal status, it makes logical sense to make the comparison to the legal intoxicants to determine whether or not the new intoxicant fits in the same range of acceptability.

Putting too much of anything in your body is bad for your health, common sense finds.

There are lots of people that develop mental issues from various causes. A bunch of researchers needed a project and now that cannabis is becoming widely accepted it is something that the researchers can work on and get paid handsomely. Alcohol is far more of a problem even though it is acceptable and legal in most of the world. Opioids are a huge problem and doctors prescribe them like aspirin.

Opioids and proper aspirin both. I went to a drugstore recently looking to buy some melatonin and the woman told me no, you need to get a prescription for that.

You know the right-wingers with their moral centre are going to be all over this report. "See how dangerous marijuana is, we need to keep it illegal and keep up the fight on the war against drugs."
Never mind that alcohol and tobacco cause far more damage to the body.

Well, it makes you intoxicated, at which time you can do some dumb stuff. It doesn't actually have an effect on IQ overall though.

Legalize it

Smoking is quickly becoming old school in places like California and Canada. Other things like edibles and sprays are what the kids are using these days.

Have to fly to Jamaica and tell those 70-something year old guys I know to stop smoking that strong stuff right now. They might stop being so mellow and go psychotic at any minute.

Nope, there are plenty of forms of escapism; social and sexual intercourse. Television. Sports. Religion. Travel etc.
Everything in moderation.

Not sure about psychosis, but it does make you dumb.

Its benign till it isn't
Once you have the psychosis, or have acted out on it and hurt someone, its a bit late then, keep promoting Nicorette,Nicobate etc smoking is the soft gateway drug to all manner of ill health.

This is old news to all who have not bought into all the pro-marijuana messages pushed constantly by the popular culture and the mainstream media.

Regarding tobacco, yes, I think everyone would agree with you.
Regarding alcohol, though, no. Not when alcohol is consumed moderately and responsibly -- in which case it can actually have health benefits.
Why isn't marijuana ever compared to being clean and sober? It's always compared to alcohol and tobacco to try to make it look good.
But in a straight-up comparison with being drug-free and sober, it stands no chance -- which is probably why marijuana-lovers always avoid making that comparison.
JenniSchiebel
Are smoking marijuana and drinking vodka our only two choices in life?
No, they're not. There's also something called being drug-free and sober. Or being drug-free and consuming alcohol infrequently and moderately.
Why don't marijuana fans ever compare marijuana to that?
Answer: Because marijuana is inferior to it from a health standpoint -- and marijuana's fans know it.
