I wish marijuana would not be so glorified as "safe" and so on. It increases risk of depression in young people? That is not news to me. I have known about that for quite some time.

Pro-marijuana people always compare it to alcohol to try to make it seem beneficial. Why don't they ever compare it to being sober and drug-free?

Answer: If they make that comparison, they know marijuana will completely lose.

Because we have no interest in being sober and drug free.

Answer: If they make that comparison, they know marijuana will completely lose.

Not to me it doesn’t. And I say that as someone who spends 99.9% of my time sober.

Easier to buy a unicorn than cannabis in Japan.  Can't imagine this is going to be a concern in Japan.

No surprise. I lean libertarian, and am against criminalizing marijuana users. But it's sad to see the elation that comes with decriminalization of a new drug in a country so beset by drug abuse and addiction. If one includes the use of mood altering drugs prescribed by doctors, the USA is suffering from a drug abuse epidemic.

So the obvious solution to marijuana induced depression will be some new drug for kids that makes pharmaceutical companies a lot of money while they permanently screw up an entire generation.

This is one side of the story. The other side being that it likely helps waaaay more people with various ailments and stress, so it's still a thumbs up from me.

What is unsafe about marijuana use in adults? I don't think kids should drink alcohol or smoke pot because neither sound like very good things for a developing mind. But there has never been even 1 case that proves marijuana has any damaging effects on an adult mind. Is that news to you?

What's the point of comparing it to being sober, a responsible adult will smoke weed at home during their free time. What's it to you what they do in their personal space? Why do you get to judge others for how they want to spend their free time? Nobody is judging you. Anyone could just as easily say whatever you do at home in your "sober" time is not beneficial to your life. But they aren't because they are respecting. So how does one benefit more from being sober than high? You must have experimented with it enough to be able to make such claims, yes?

Would need more info into this study to buy the suggestions though personally. There are many users I know personally who use it to self-medicate for depression (either consciously or subconsciously) whether that is a good idea or not. I would have to wonder how many of these people would have suffered from depression regardless of their interaction with the plant.

I often wonder who funds these studies and who stands to benefit the most.

It's no secret that cannabis has been in use for thousands of years. Even the people of Japan used to cultivate cannabis all over the country from at least the Joman period (10,000-200BC) until it was banned in the mid-20th century.

So did the Japanese and teens of other indigenous populations also suffer from depression caused by smoking pot all those years ago? Perhaps a bit of paranoia but depression? Maybe the cause of the depression is not cannabis at all but teens having a hard time adapting to modern society, or some other thing.

I dk but am asking since cannabis is a companion plant of humans. Humans and animals have an endocannabinoid system which was named after cannabis and is apparently responsible for maintaining the body's checks and balance system (homeostasis).

One site I came across says:

*The endocannabinoid system (ECS) explains why natural cannabinoids in hemp and other plants have therapeutic effects -- Before cannabis prohibition, hemp and marijuana had been used for thousands of years to treat a number of ailments, including epilepsy, headaches, arthritis, pain, depression, and nausea. Traditional healers may not have known why the plant was effective but their experience demonstrated its effectiveness and provided the basis for later scientific inquiry. The discovery of the ECS revealed a biological basis for the therapeutic effects of plant cannabinoids and has sparked renewed interest in cannabis as medicine. (www.medium.com)*

It's like anything, you overdo it and it will have a negative effect. Alcohol and tobacco (taxable) do way more harm and damage than anything cannabis ever did. I'm sceptical of the results of this study.

Bear in mind “correlation is not causation” to what extent did the subjects take the cannabis in reaction to depression, unless you can show a causative relationship you can not rule out causation from other factors. Unless this study controlled for this, which is difficult where they use data collected by others it invalidates the conclusions.

Cannabis, like alcohol, shouldn't be for minors anyway

And many people, not just minors, turn to cannabis because they are already getting depressed - the same with alcohol

I’d like to see an objective cannabis vs alcohol comparison. Alcohol is a mega bucks industry. Cannabis is trying to survive. Who’s paying for these studies, anyway?

A plant develops properties to enhance its survival by producing chemicals that discourage predation or enhance dispersion. Who, except for the pot heads, wants to be a slave to a plant.

Pro-marijuana people always compare it to alcohol to try to make it seem beneficial. Why don't they ever compare it to being sober and drug-free?

Like religious beliefs, it is a form of escapism and a means to pursue happiness. The ecstasy of worship is not dissimilar to a state of THC high. I see nothing wrong with either, as long as the participants aren't hurting anyone.

Keep demonising a natural plant and answer the question cui bono?

Well, we know the answer to that!

Im sure that the long winters in Canada and the UK contribute to depression yet no government would suggest emigration as a treatment...
