This are very good news, preliminary data pointed to increased infectivity but also pathogenicity for B117, fortunately more data have proved this not to be as important as believed. This still means the variant causes more damage (since it spreads more easily) but at least is not a double punch.

Now to fully characterize the other variants and see exactly how much difference they are from the classical strain.

Not so fast... There are also concerns, that those studies are only based on few and local data and specifically about people treated in hospitals, so therefore the earlier remarks projected on the whole population might still be valid.

Those studies are included in the "Evidence before this study" section of the article and are based on even fewer and lower quality data than this study. Unless a problem in the methodology followed is identified that means this study is in a higher class of evidence and more likely to be correct.

UK variants.

Please do not use geographical names as adjectives to a virus type. It only spreads racism and discrimination. The WHO made this very clear to us over a year ago.
