I don't use smog as an excuse to skip workouts. I use the fact that I'm lazy as my excuse.

I don't know what it's like in Denmark but in my area, you get 99% of your pollution exposure while commuting. Be it by car, cycle, walking or public transport... you get to breath the filthiest air and on smog day, your commuting time is even getting longer. You should be allowed to work from home if you have a condition. Workout is not an issue as you can find many gyms with properly filtered air or have yours at home.

Just saying but somewhere like London is going to be way worse than Japanese cities where there are few diesel passenger cars. That was one thing the Japanese government got right.

Not doubting you, but I wonder how much pollution there is in the average home. With no data to back this up, I get the feeling that modern homes in northern Europe have less air flow than in the past. Those cold drafts we used to complain about perhaps helped clear out various emissions we don't like to talk about.

I respectfully disagree with the conclusion that is better to go outside and exercise, no matter how bad the smog. IMO, there comes a time when it is better to stay indoors and rest. I remember being a child in Southern California, back before smog abatement measures were put into place. There were times when it was difficult to breathe, and breathing made me dizzy. Staying indoors at school and resting made a lot of sense on those days.

No excuse whatever fumes or heat for me.

I remember I had run when temp above 35°C, the issue was just that it took me over an hour to stop sweating like hell. I just drank , got a few showers and was feeling very ok as for my body capacity. Comfort should not be target otherwise you always stay with a beer in front of TV ...and die young one day.
