My father in law was an ENT and he always maintained that Q-tips were good for his business due to number of people who damaged their ears using them.

Q-tips are great with 99% isopropyl alcohol for cleaning electronics and other delicate equipment but I shuddered every time when I see someone ramming them into their ears.

I may be wrong but this advice rings a bit hollow coming from a country where the removal of ear wax is a bit of a fetish.
