This is great news. Hard for any of you to imagine what a big deal the publicity from movies like this does for an export and tourism dependent, tiny, far off country like New Zealand, especially in Europe

NOT shooting "The Hobbit" in NZ would be a mistake as the previous movies were shot there and a change of scenery ........

Apart from that I sort agree with previous poster.

Unfortunately this showed up a flaw in the NZ film industry. And before anyone flames, I am actually from Wellington, New Zealand itself. Hollywood was always good at pandering to stars but New Zealand never was. Weta had everything, the studios, the gear, the landscape, and more importantly people willing to work for dirt cheap on something cool, since the living cost is so low.

Bring in actors, in particular, overseas actors and all of a sudden you have a problem. The Lord of the Rings, lived on humble actors that were willing to bear it, some were not even that well off at the time. Since LOTR has become a success, the actor thing has become more of an issue, though I'm sure it'll survive, as some actors are still willing to do it in spite of bucks. Sir Ian McKellan, Andy Serkis and Martin Freeman being amoung them.

Good on the govt for backing the project so tehy can get into making the thing... I do sympathise with the unions as working for these major productions is pretty rough unless yure one of thetop names....so its good to see peole stand up for themselves more. Unfortunately the big guy wins again and employee abuse become the norm again...

It's not going to be for kids, unfortunately. It would be great if it did. Peter Jackson talked about doing a backstory on Bilbo's father. There was enough in the Hobbit to fill the two movies, if he desired. Expect it to follow LOTR in mood.

I agree with tanakataro, but when I read his post I imagined it being said in a "brainy smurf" voice ;)

TanakaTaro at 10:16 AM JST - 28th October Sorry to be pedantic but the Hobbit is not a prequel. A prequel is a work that is produced after but set before an existing work, for example Star Wars Episode I (1999) is the prequel to Star Wars Episode IV (1977). The Hobbit was written before Lord of the Rings so the correct term is "predecessor".

You're not being pedantic. I completely agree.

To support TanakaTaro: prequel was made to explain Star Wars, The Godfather II, and the Indiana Jones movies which kept moving back in time (Just part of Godfather II)- it's a modern word that became popular after Coppolla, Lucas, and Spielberg fans needed it. On topic: The Hobbit would be a good movie for the kids if done properly. Lord of the Ring was just too dark and depressing for a family to enjoy.

“The Hobbit” is J.R.R. Tolkien’s prequel to “The Lord of the Rings.”

I don't think the Hobbit will do nearly as well as the LOTR because the LOTR has a much more exciting storyline.

Were not the Lord of the Rings films produced in more than one country?

No.

Obviously some work was done elsewhere but as they were produced by Peter Jackson's own production company, the majority of work was done in NZ.

These movies are already tainted by all this silly squabbling. We haven't seen the end of this.
