Japanese girls go sexier in their fashion styles

It was really hot this past summer and we're not just talking about the temperatures. Shukan Post spotted some hot-looking women in the skimpiest of fashions, some of which looked little more than underwear. Nonfiction writer Yuzu Yamashita reports on the trend.

“I can't help staring at girls wearing short skirts and low-cut tops, whenever I am on a crowded train,” admits a businessman in his 50s. “But when I do, they soon glare at me in anger. I think it's unfair for them to react that way as long as they expose themselves that much.”

Asking these “sexy girls” in places like Shibuya and Shinjuku who they dress for, most answer: “Nobody,” "For myself,” “I wear such clothes just because I like that brand” and “I've never thought I'm wearing clothes for someone else." The most typical answer is: “I dress this way because it makes me feel good.”

One girl in her 20s says, “I chose this look because it's cute. I don't even pay attention to whether anyone is staring at me or not," while a 26-year-old woman says, “I like to show off both my fashion and body line. I take care of myself and make sure I don't get fat. What I would tell younger girls is that you can express yourself through fashions like this."

Of course, many girls are aware of being ogled at by men. A teenage girl says, “Middle-aged guys often look at me. Some of them turn around toward me for a long look, which is irritating. But I have learned to basically ignore those guys.”

Maybe some people worry that these girls might become victims of sex crimes, or get groped on trains. In fact, they say they rarely encounter such cases. One girl says, “Gropers hesitate to approach girls who dress this sexy because it's too aggressive for them. They tend to target more conservatively dressed girls.”

"Lingerie concierge" Mai Otorii analyzes the phenomena by saying, “Talking about lingerie has been a sort of taboo even among women. It's quite recent that lingerie is focused on as a fashion.” She adds that the fashion styles of celebrities in Hollywood have changed the concept of lingerie.

It is not only Hollywood; Japanese celebrities have also made sexy lingerie fashion more acceptable in society. For example, singer Kumi Koda, who is known to be “sexy and cool,” and Ayumi Hamasaki are “role models for fashion, which is not too high a bar for everyone,” says a 19-year-old girl. Other celebrities who accentuate their big breasts on TV programs, such as Aki Hoshino, are being more accepted by many people as fashionistas.

Otorii concludes: “I think it's OK for young girls to try such fashions as long as it goes well with them. But they should know their bodies properly, such as shape and size, and what looks good on them.”

In her research, Yamashita also gauged the reaction of fathers. One middle-aged man says, “I don't think I can stop my daughter from wearing sexy clothes. But I'd like to tell her how guys feel about such fashions.” Another man says, “If I tell my daughter to stop wearing such skimpy clothes, it would be the end of communication with her at home.” (Translated by Taro Fujimoto)

It's pretty obvious they aren't considering men when they dress like that - if they were they would be too scared too.

I think girls and women should be able to dress anyway they want to.

this summer's fashion accessory was skin - I enjoyed the summer views!

I don't like this trend of Japanese (not to mention other countries) females trend of dressing skimpier and sexier. Whatever happened to dressing with class, dressing sexy doesn't have to be "dressing" in tops that expose your belly and that nasty tattoo right above your rear end, and skirts that barely cover mid thighs. And it seems like younger and younger girls are being "encouraged" to dress skimpy. It is really a sick trend. I don't have anything against adult females in certain situations dressing in sexy or revealing clothing (such as promotions of events, modeling swimsuit, sporting events, etc.) but can we please bring back some class and dignity?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

So where are the pics so we can judge for ourselves?? :-)

In any case, people like to look at people. If you're annoyed or upset by that, then you should dress accordingly. Get over it already.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

For once I agree with rjd jr. A lot of young Japanese women mistake dressing like a hooker as fashion.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I agree with jonobugs.... where are the pics? ;)

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Young Japanese dress more like sluts and hookers than fashionable young ladies. Then they complain because the salarimen grope them on the trains? What do the expect, dressed like that?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Im not a big traveller, but compared with other countries, is not like the girls have big stuff to show anyway.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

just think. In the Mid East its non existent, even a sin. After 11 years... I would say they show more n more skin each year. It has gotten to the point of the bottom bum hanging out no matter if theyre a dog or cute. I kinda dig it some days... but heck its and a gimme the thumbs up society. Theyre pretty obsessed and insecure for sure. Bizarre and unreal really. My catholic Mom would be ashamed of me. Anyway, why else would you check your face and make up every 10 minutes regardless of where you are.... but meanmutha digs a hottie in boots and jeans.

Other celebrities who accentuate their big breasts on TV programs, such as Aki Hoshino, are being more accepted by many people as fashionistas.

A singer who recently made derogatory remarks about mature women and who got busted for an affair with a married man, a famous talent who admitted to starting her career path as a hostess, and a porno magazine model as the role models for young Japanese girls. Sums up nicely the problems with Japanese society and the influence on young girls by yakuza-run agencies.

Some of them turn around toward me for a long look, which is irritating. But I have learned to basically ignore those guys.”

But they can't ignore you if you dress like a hooker. Dress like a lady if you want to be respected as one. Maybe we should encourage the male population to stare at these girls to make them consider how they are dressing.

Interesting headline. Doesn't calling Japanese women "girls" add to potential objectification?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Japanese girls look so incredibly cheap. If they dressed the way they do in Australia, everyone would think they were selling themselves.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Only because it is kawaii!!! Maybe next year if burka is in fashion most will dress like that.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I must agree with the whole "Look-at-me-the-tramp" outfits these "girls" wear. I see micro sized jean shorts with halter tops, and long boots...WTF. Of course I'm going to stare and wish to be a piece of lycra.

The US is in a jeans and t-shirt mode. Nothing like this.

If they have the body to show, I'm all for it. But if you have nothing up top and not enough junk in the trunk then don't dress like you do. Above all, Japanese girls, don't start dressing your children like little tarts in order to live vicariously through them. That is just terrible.

I also find it hard to believe that the girls don't want men looking. Of course they are dressing like whore's in order to get noticed by guys. They want attention. They want the satisfaction of knowing that someone has paid attention to them. So men, pay attention. Dudes in Japan have to start catcalling the ladies. No more of this silent oogling. Let it out. Howl at them like the animals you are and they want you to be.

Question: Why is it now that the weather is turning cooler I'm seeing more bare midriffs?

I think this is the first time that I can safely say ... I completely and 100% agree with rjd jr's comment. Girls don't have to be near naked to be attractive or sexy.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

noone to blame for getting ogled than themselves. if the shop is closed draw the blinds

0 ( +0 / -0 )

This is what makes living in Japan so wonderful. Japanese women like to dress sexy. Who cares if they do it for themselves or do it to get noticed. Who cares if its understated or overstated. There is so much eye candy in this country its always going to be a great day!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Why is it now that the weather is turning cooler I'm seeing more bare midriffs?

Come on Sarge, who are you trying to kid ? Your favourite bar Motown 2 has bare midriffs all year round..

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Romulus is not complaining. Seeing hot woman everyday makes you feel good. Japan is much much better than Afghanistan and the woman are some of the hottest on the planet. I love they way they take care of their appearance. Feels good to be a man.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

This thread is worthless without pictures.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I like sexy girls baring midriffs. Give me more. I totally respect them as the females they are. Just the way I like em! Young, dumb and full of .... well I'll leave that to your imagination.

“Gropers hesitate to approach girls who dress this sexy because it’s too aggressive for them. They tend to target more conservatively dressed girls.”

Many of you above seem to have over-looked this piece of the article. I think there is a lot of truth in the statement. It is a rare groper that makes a logical analysis and correlates dress with a desire to be groped. They exist but are few. Usually a groper is looking for a weak victim who will bear it than a willing a victim. It is more instinct than logic. And it comes from the simple fact that the weak victim is far more common than the willing.

And as the statement says, a girl who dresses very sexy appears to be confident and strong and intimidating, not inviting, and that counts toward most men and not just gropers.

I think girls and women should be able to dress anyway they want to.

Not sure why girls should get a free pass. It is not like men do not experience a negative side effect when this happens. Women do not like it when I swear like a sailor, so I don't. In return, I think it only fair that women don't tease me at all hours of the day by displaying what I cannot have. --Cirroc

Sarge,

Question: Why is it now that the weather is turning cooler I'm seeing more bare midriffs?

They need a full size tee to catch the summer sweat.

A lot of young Japanese women mistake dressing like a hooker as fashion

Maybe they don't know what hookers look like. How often do you actually see a hooker in Japan?

They should be free to do as they please. This benefits everyone. The prudes know who they should avoid and the fun lovers know who they can approach.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Why doesn´t this article have a photo?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

How often do you actually see a hooker in Japan?

You must be kidding? Every night on my way home from work. The nightlife district is full of them. The saddest are the middle-aged hookers working on the shadowy perifery of the nightlife district. Depressing to see.

Moderator: Back on topic please.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The consensus: Girls don't have to be near-naked to be sexy; where are the near-naked photos to go with this article?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Black flag if the shop is closed draw the blinds-Hilarious!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Maybe they don't know what hookers look like.

This should be revised to: Maybe they don't know what gaijin hookers look like. I think they can be forgiven for not knowing and even not caring. They do not share our sometimes psychotic sexual mores, and I thank God everyday I am here. --Cirroc

0 ( +0 / -0 )

CavemanLawyer- Your knowledge of Japan and hookers etc are very poor. In Japan it is all hidden in Soap Lands and visiting services. There are more perverts here than any country i have ever been to.

Many Japanese girls look like cheap tarts, maybe some like girls looking lke that, i don't judge them on that point.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

All I was saying is the Japanese do not share our view of what a hooker looks like. They have minds and viewpoints of their own.

Japanese girls fashion does not have style at all. They are just like every other rich country, following celebrity style and what magazines tell them. The world has become very shallow.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

What is frightening is how young these girls can be. The other day at the supermarket I saw two sisters. Both could not have been over 10 years old, but both were wearing mini-skirts and high heel shoes. The mother, who was accompanying them, was obviously one of those trash types. I see this quite often.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

In her research, Yamashita also gauged the reaction of fathers. One middle-aged man says, “I don’t think I can stop my daughter from wearing sexy clothes. But I’d like to tell her how guys feel about such fashions.” Another man says, “If I tell my daughter to stop wearing such skimpy clothes, it would be the end of communication with her at home.”

This pretty well sums of the state of parenting in Japan.

They do not share our sometimes psychotic sexual mores

Another white boy on his Japanese fantasy. No you're right they do not share our psychotic sexual mores, they share the psychotic sexual mores of Victorian England...

Me too and it really freaks me out that they can sexually objectivey their own young daughters. It makes me really sad, the daughter has already learnt that her true worth in this society will be measured by how attractive she appears to males and nothing else.

"This thread is worthless without pictures"

Almost, but not quite.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

It is interesting how this comes back to fashion, but it seems some would have Japanese girls change thier dress on account of how they view hookers in their own countries, just as they would have the Japanese change words in their own language based on how outsiders view it and not how it is actually meant.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

These are not Asian girsl we are talking about, they are Japanese, get with the programme, this is 21st century.

Japan should be more concerned about solving their economic woes , than some shallow fashion rubbish.

Girls in Japan have been revealing clothes for decades, it aint new JT, believe me.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

am drawing a blank. Please tell. --Cirroc

me too. i was hopin'someone else might have the answer. i've seen some canadian girls dressed really scantily, but the ones with the bodies to pull it off don't dress as scantily as j-girls do. the ones who do dress as scantily/sexily as j-girls do really should reconsider their options ... ha ha ha. circus tent, anyone?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Another man says, “If I tell my daughter to stop wearing such skimpy clothes, it would be the end of communication with her at home.”

If you can't talk to your daughter about her clothes and the way she looks, communication has already come to an end.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I think it is just great that so many of the girls dress like whores. Everyone has a different function in life. Some are doctors and scientists and some are for entertainment. Everybody knowing their place and doing a good job at it is what makes the world go round. It would be a boring world with no flowers to brighten up our days.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Actually, on the street, the soap hookers wear sweats.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

So, basically, J-girls dress like that because it's cute but they get offended when guys look at them? Which means that men aren't allowed to find their style cute? Only them have the right to find it cute?

Well, cute girls aren't well known for their brain power anyway.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Not sure what a psychotic sexual more is,but ill take a guess..is it viewing a 10 year old girl as sexualized merely because she is wearing shorts and boots? Women from whatever nation should be encouraged to feel free enough to dress exactly as they want. However i would caution any female who wants to look good to understand that tattooed eyebrows generally wreck the appearance from any viewing range inside 5 metres. As to my theory as why Japanese ladies find shorts and boots desirable..well maybe its something to do with accentuating leg length i for one cant blame them for trying to right natures wrong in this department.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Give me skimpy clothes over a burka any day. I don't like the increasing sluttiness of modern styles but at least Japanese girls can wear the clothes they want to.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Bento - not sure where you live but in Japan, many mothers dress their little girls early on in ridiculously glittered high heels, bangles, "sexy" outfits ... nothing is more disgusting and sad than seeing a mother/ ELEMENTARY or PRESCHOOL daughter comboed out in "alluring" matching outfits! ugh!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Not sure what a psychotic sexual more is,but ill take a guess..is it viewing a 10 year old girl as sexualized merely because she is wearing shorts and boots?

In my opinion, it is NOT normal for girls under ten to wear skimpy clothes and high heel shoes. I think their mothers just want to re-live their younger days by allowing their daughters to dress in the same way. It doesn't help either when these 'role models' buy their young kids LV/Gucci bags (and encourage them to dye their hair blonde).

I don't like the increasing sluttiness of modern styles but at least Japanese girls can wear the clothes they want to.

I agree. But if they dress like slappers, then they'll get no sympathy from me if they're called slappers in public.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

If adult women want to wear skimpy, sexy clothes, it's up to them. If done with class and in the right context, I support it, in fact I encourage it.

What I object to is the increasing sexualisation of kids. 12-16 year olds cant resist the glitter of pop idols and other celebrities and want to copy them. Most have no idea what theyre getting themselves into and unwittingly advertise to a demographic they're not really aiming for. They find out of course when some can't control himself oyaji on the train home one evening, takes his fantasy a little too far. Some kids take it badly.

Parents, resist the temptation to give in to your kids too soon and let them have a childhood. Or if thats impossible, arm them with knowledge.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

It is a free world. Let them wear what they want. If it offends you, you are free to look at something else. Don't impose your standards on others because you have no right to do so.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

They dress up in a way to attract men, without realising that they're attracting men, so when the men go for them, they scare them away. Thus the men end up watching porn.

So in the end, these women suffer, because men are more interested in their AV idols. I call that justice; you get what you deserve.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

I think its sad for a man to say that if he mentioned to his daughter about the sexy clothes she is wearing it would end their communication. I guess you get neutered after years working 12 plus hours a day and mom is running things at home.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

any pictures??? i want to oogle too

0 ( +0 / -0 )

What the hell is a 'Lingerie concierge'? I know that unusual jobs and courses in Japan that give you a license are rife, but this takes the cake ...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"Fashionable" is such a subjective term...

I agree with some of the above posters that the amount of skin shown is not proportional to beauty. I actually find ladies in dresses/skirts more pleasing to look at. "Popular fashion" is an eyecatcher for sure, whether they have the body for it or not. But the impression it leaves is not necessarily the best one.

And reading this article reminded me of a girl I saw sitting infront of the church I attend. She couldn't be more than 15 years old, but her shorts were so short and loose that you can see up to there. If I had a daughter she wouldn't be seen wearing such clothing - especially not infront of a church.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

During my time in Japan, making friends with many of both male and female Japanese, I've come to realise and understand alot of the fashion is about expressing themselves. The fashion is pretty much anything goes and it changes like the wind; I like that alot. Almost any person in Japan can have some individuality. Most Japanese girls I talk to have also stated they like to look cute and express their good figure. Good on them I say, its in Japan!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I don't think skimpy equals sexy when the girls / women in question 1) clomp around like cows because they can't or won't walk properly in their shoes or 2) when the girls / women in question are constantly fussing; touching their hair obsessively, doing their make-up, looking in every reflective surface possible. If a woman has confidence in who she is and what she looks like, her beauty will come out no matter what she's wearing. Sadly, far too many of the women I see in Tokyo are so lacking in confidence they can't seem to make it one block without checking to see if everything is perfect, every hair in place. If you find that sexy, well then you're in the right place!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Are those people who complain the ones that cannot control their urges? I openly oogle them when they were skimpy outfits. if it offends them they can complain to me. But japanese females (mothers) are extremely naive. i wouldn't let my 10year old daughter wear a miniskirt and high heels. It seems that they do not understand the effect these kids/girls have on the lolicon manga reading salarymen.

Ambrosia, Well said!

“But when I do, they soon glare at me in anger. I think it’s unfair for them to react that way as long as they expose themselves that much.”

haha. How many times have we said this?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

agree with amrosia, also, i think girls who are underdressed and confident are much sexier than those who need to dress super slutty-looking in order to be noticed b/c of their low/fragile self-esteem. I have very little/no respect for those girls. Moreover, even for the ones who look hot, most of them are boring underneath the hot exterier.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

"I can't help staring at girls with short skirts and low-cut tops"

Probably he has red blood.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Personally, I do not find Ayumi Hamasaki attractive at all! She's too fake. I dread the day when all girls make her the role model.

"One girl says, “Gropers hesitate to approach girls who dress this sexy because it’s too aggressive for them. They tend to target more conservatively dressed girls.”"

Profound!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I can not believe this thing has comments now. Yes!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Japanese girls do this because they can get away with it.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

...hmmm...in my opinion...most of girls here dress like prostit tes.....lol

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I mean the Japanese girls...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

There is a fine line between SEXY and SLUTTY! Most of the Japanese girls I tend to notice (who can't help but notice!) are opting more for the slutty hooker look. They shouldn't complain when men stare (or even ask "how much?")

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The reason all these girls show off their bodies is because they have absolutely nothing else to show off.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Cant understand why some guys here complain about the girls wearing sexy clothes. I am a MAN and I admit I like to see that - better than those fat western girls that walk around. Anyway, if those j-girls wear sexy clothes they cant complain when men are looking. I sure do!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Any other girls representing here? Don't listen to what anyone else says - if a girl's showing off her breasts or bottom, tummy or legs, it's because she wants you to look. She wants to get as many looks as she can and it (pathetic, but yes) contributes to her self-esteem. Send her out for the day in a sweatshirt and sweatpants and she'll be depressed and crabby as all hell (because no one's looking at her butt). I can't believe there are no pics with this story ...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

sonnoujoui: So is it fat girls in general that you don't like looking at or Western girls? If it's fat girls then why not just say that because there are plenty of them here, they've apparently just missed your discerning eyes.

SiouxGirl: You're absolutely right. The woman in the story is a total contradiction anyway. She says she doesn't care if anyone is looking at her and in the same breath adds that she likes to "show off" her fashion and body line. Well, if you want to show off them you do care what other people think so it's just ridiculous to pretend otherwise.

And what the hell is a "body line" anyway? Can we just say figure and leave it at that?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Just had a thought...

Does this include women who are underdressed and yet makes a fuss about covering their behinds when climbing stairs? If they're so conscious about someone seeing the inside of their skirt, they should wear longer skirts instead.

If you wear revealing clothes, don't complain if they work.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

n3312:...lol..I saw one example this morning as I was coming to work. yea...why be so conscious....the men purposedly waited for her to climb the stairs first...:)

0 ( +0 / -0 )

one exception - if it's incredibly hot during summer, wearing shorts and a string bikini stop is a matter of survival when you have to leave air conditioning. Men still look. They're men. And the woman who's wearing a short skirt, climbing stairs and scolding the guys about looking - after work with her friends she's saying, "All the guys look at my butt!" And she's loving it. Trust.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

yea...i think so too S'Girl! those girls r professional pretenders...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

It is a fine line between an appreciative look and a pervy stare, or between a flattering comment and harrassment, but a line that a gentleman should know how to walk. ("How much?" is harrassment no matter what!)

As a rule of thumb for most girls, if the one doing the staring is a good looking, confident man, it's not staring. If it's a balding nerd, call the cops!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

If was dressed only in leopard loincloth riding on trains and some middle aged sexfiend obasan grabbed my hamster, it's all my fault. I couldn't blame them for losing their contro. So, it works both ways, girls shouldn't dress like that and expect to not get any glares or a little groping here and there.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Why am I not surprised by the fathers' comments that they don't want their daughters dressing skimpily, but do nothing for fear of losign the relationsahip or communication? Could it be that these girls are dressing this way for attention, because Dad isn't giving them much at home? I understand the heat and humidity issue, but some of the things I saw girls wearing (and I mean girls, as in upper elementary and junior high girls) when I went to Tokyo to teach were more than just clothing to beat the heat.

Bottom line: girls in Japan will always be regarded stereotypically as easy, in large part due to the way that they dress. Dress like a hooker, expect to be treated like one.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

if the girls dont want to be stared at-- dont wear such slutty clothes for people to look at... idiots >_>

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Come on they look sexy, but is true we do not know who is who, just remember look like asian it does not means is Japanese, just keep it in mind.
