There’s something about Sawa

As the Japanese women’s soccer team walks away from the London Olympics with a respectable yet somewhat regrettable silver medal, many of them will return to a normal life.

For Homare Sawa, the national team’s top scorer and FIFA’s Woman Player of the Year, this means she can finally get back to her secondary claim to fame – sex symbol. If there’s one thing international fame has brought to Sawa, it is an expanded legion of men who would like to spend some time together.

According to an acquaintance who spoke to Shukan Bunshun magazine, ever since her high school days, boys tended to gravitate toward the midfielder. Sawa herself confirms that more often than not, guys would approach her.

During her time playing in the U.S. league, she was said to be deeply involved with an American boyfriend. When asked by a reporter, “What would you do if you knew the world was going to blow up tomorrow?” Sawa replied “I would go to meet him [in America].”

With the recent ascension of Japan’s team in the World Cup, Sawa’s fame skyrocketed. On Japanese TV programs, comedians and personalities one after another professed their love for her.

Internationally, a sports writer declared Sawa “a hit with men around the world,” particularly in South America where a healthy number of soccer players said that they would love a chance to talk with the “Asian beauty Sawa.”

It’s uncertain what it is about Sawa that draws men like a magnet. Perhaps she has that legendary X factor scientists have long been trying to find. Whatever it is, guys are wanting some of it.

According to Sawa’s acquaintance, “her dream is to settle down and get married.” So as her soccer career settles down, not just Japan, but the world waits to see who the one lucky guy is to land soccer’s Woman of the Year.

I've seen Sawa, in person, she is indeed very attractive and looks different than in photos & screen. There was a reference to Ms. Nagasato, who is actually rather beautiful in person and one of the fittest athletes to be seen.

Saori Yoshida the wrestler is hotter, if physicality is what is sexy to you.

WELL! i guess this is what the article is referring to: http://ameblo.jp/karina14/entry-11062403160.html

Sawa's confidence and strength is certainly something, but there are much better looking players on the team. I've read/heard before that she's apparently "popular among foreigners" - probably the Japanese media jumping to conclusions because she had an American boyfriend.

I liked her because she has really shown most of Japan's athletes that you can overcome that "shyness" with immersion, discipline, and patience. As difficult as it may have been initially, she seems very comfortable in her skin. She has accomplished more on the world stage than most "talentos" and Japanese athletes have, yet they seem to get more recognition in Japan. I wish this article was more biographical than sexist. I guess someone wanted to give her the Hope Solo treatment. I hope she opens a nice soccer academy for young girls. This is a great opportunity for Japan use her as an ambassador to health, peace, or some other worthy cause. She jumps at the opportunity to interview in English, that's sexy to me. Please don't get lock her into one of those ridiculous "comedy" shows.

what's wrong with being a sex symbol? In life you can only play the cards you're dealt with. If sex-appeal is one of them and you're not playing it because of some other peoples jealousy then you're gonna miss out on a lot of chances. The trick is probably not to get a big head about it

@frontandcentre: Nadeshiko have two pretty ladies in their striker group: Kawasumi and Maruyama in defense, the prettiest ones are Sameshima and Kumagai. Kinga actually has good looks if only her hair were different. in midfield, well according to this article Sawa is one and perhaps Sakaguchi.

Sawa is unconventional in her beauty, I'll say that. But being so physically fit adds to her cred as a sex symbol.

Can't remember her name, but one of the strikers is really cute - I saw her on TV this morning.

don't be surprised, look at Yuki Nagasato, i thought she was one of the more manlier looking girls in the squad but guess what, just this summer she got married and is now Yuki Ogimi. the husband is quite the looker too!

She is not even an Asian beauty. She's meh at best.

I like Sawa a lot. Rooted for her and the rest of the team (glad they got to fly back biz class).

If any of them is cute it's Kawasumi!!!!

Practically all young Japanese women get involved with white boys in America. Seems like that's the real intention of going oversees.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

She is a beauty, in Asia style. Not every man is fond of vulgar sexy women a la Rihanna.

I told one of my wifes friends she resembled Homare Sawa and they both looked at me as if I had just peed in the fish tank. "My friend is very cute!" was my wifes rebuke.

Another lesson learned eh. Before you say anything to 'er indoors think it through, assess all the possible repercussions and then decide to take the safe route and keep it to yourself :-)

Yeeeeeah, I'm not seeing it, myself.

sorry, that should be angles...

I goggled her and saw a lot of her pictures...and she is pretty, in some angels she is so sexy even...

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder...

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

I don't think she is one bit attractive... I would not give her a second look, but Hope Solo.... I'd like to play her "one on one".

That's quick...deeply involved during the US League...Sounds to me like she's just a typical J woman.....

Sawa - sex symbol? This is a joke? :) She definitely looks like a great person, but not as sex symbol.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Well, I myself don't think she is particularly sexy, but there might be reasons guys are attracted ...and BTW I heard that judo gold medalist Ms Matsumoto is also said to be Asian beauty

0 ( +0 / -0 )

stick to talking about her football skills and not her looks..... she did not look particularity attractive during the Olympic games. I have yet to hear about somebody wanting to date her for her looks. I'm sure she is a great gal with plenty of inner beauty, but to call her a sex symbol is a bit too much.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

I agree Sawa has a certain vitality that attracts not a beauty/stunner but sexy in her own way. Add in she is confident and comfortable with her body.

More than I can say for most ladies out there.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Most athletes won't win an award for sex-symbol. Add in their training schedule and the in between sheets activity takes a back-seat.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Her passion for the game is inspiring, and that is enough.

Sex symbol talk is not appropriate.

Ms. Sawa is one athlete I truly respect and admire - she seems humble, articulate and intelligent to match her awesome skill on the ball.

Yep no argument there. But sex symbol? That's a yellow card for Marriage Matchmaker News.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

It would be cool if she married her American boyfriend. I'm sure they would make a nice international couple.

I think her deft ability to kick balls around is what makes her so attractive. Wait, that didn't come out quite right ...

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Quiet inner beauty, lads, Quiet inner beauty. In Japan particularly almost any women who exudes confidence will be 'attractive', hey, and why not? Whatever spins your wheels. But, actually, with the sex symbol stuff - it's her hair.

Oh c'mon they aimed to pass through second in the group stage, maybe they wanted to finish second overall. If anything is it consistent and that should be lauded.

Maybe she has a really outgoing and friendly personality.

That does not make her a sex symbol

Is this just a case of routine flattery, or Konkatsu News furthering their own interests and using the bland flavour of the month?

At any rate they're not fooling anybody.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Maybe a nice enough person, but a sex symbol? That is a bit of a stretch. Then again I remember a call girl ring getting busted in the States and on their books they had women of all shapes, sizes and colors. So who knows.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

While she doesn’t look so feminine on TV, she may have some hidden charms perceptible only when you are near her. Who knows?

However, instead of “Asian beauty”, it may be better to call her “Asia’s soccer queen” – no controversy with this name I think.

I told one of my wifes friends she resembled Homare Sawa and they both looked at me as if I had just peed in the fish tank. "My friend is very cute!" was my wifes rebuke.

That says it all my friends.

Yeah,,,, her excellent BALL juggling skills...That's funny. But to be for real... she doesn't strike me as a sex-symbol at all. If anything Kimura Saori should be the next Japanese sex-symbol.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

I agree. She is wonderful. And excellent ball-juggling skills.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

I think she and Godzilla Matsui would make a great couple.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

"Sex symbol?" "Asian beauty?" I hope it's not just me, but I find Ms. Sawa's looks to be rather mediocre at best (to put it kindly). Though she does have a nice set of choppers, I just can't get excited about her sandpaper complexion, her overly plucked, razor thin eyebrows, her lackluster eyes and her wide, slightly masculine-looking forehead. Has her legion of swooning fans never seen a real Japanese beauty before? Or perhaps her skillful antics on the pitch have clouded their aesthetic judgment. Of course there is no accounting for taste, as they say, but "sex symbol" and "Asian beauty?" Beats me.
