Tokyo Midtown park now popular dating spot thanks to Kusanagi

A "crime scene" in Roppongi has turned into a dating spot for couples, decorated with illuminations for Christmas and New Year’s.

Eight months have passed since policemen dragged away SMAP member Tsuyoshi Kusanagi, found naked, drunk and shouting in the middle of the night. For a while after the incident, many had flocked to the park out of curiosity, but now Hinokicho Park has upgraded itself into a fashionable hot spot for couples who come to see the elaborate nighttime Christmas illuminations – not to mention the die-hard fans, including those who travel all the way from Korea where the Japanese idol is popular.

The bar, where Kusanagi got himself thoroughly intoxicated, was also packed with curious customers at the time. The owner reflects that the bar had been open for only a month back then, and had difficulty accommodating the number of people wanting to wine and dine where Kusanagi’s memorable night began. It appears that there still are plenty of fans who take pictures posing at the bar or the park bench where Kusanagi ostensibly sat, and upload the images to various blogs.

As for Kusanagi, he is scheduled to appear in this year’s NHK’s “Kohaku” program with his fellow SMAP members and will play the leading role in a film to be released in 2011. Back on track with his career, the bad experience has obviously been put behind him.

They should make the park 'clothing optional' in remembrance.

No doubt many of these groupies simply are hoping he shows up howling again.

Some artist should put a commemorative upside down naked sculpture in the exact spot. And then let's all move on.

may be Kusanagi made this park sacred by performing spiritual and sexual rites in the naked form during midnight.

So, theses dates include singing drunken songs in the nude?

Hooray for Kusanagi! I never liked him very much, until that incident.

Can you believe that there were actual news flashes at the time?

This is great! If a girl agrees to go that means she's up for a bit of streaking at the least.

I'll ask my many women now.

thoroughly intoxicated

Is there another way?

what a mindless reason for some place to become popular...typical of the locals though

Well, I hope for Kusanagi that someone will do a nice naked sculpture of him like the ancient Greeks did and put it there. Then people can go there and take pictures with it, then millions of people would flock there and all the businesses around could benefit greatly in those hard times by selling Kusanagi posters, fridge magnets, cocktails, lingerie line....the possibilities seem unlimited.

Foxie: Funny!

I think the guys taking their girlfriends there are just hoping that she'll do a tribute to Kusanagi by getting drunk and naked!

Interesting idea Foxie! It's a bit of a tradition in some colleges to rub a sculpture for luck prior to an exam. This polishes the sculpture in one spot. I wonder how that's going to work?

But I think a Kusanagi fridge magnet would be a bit tacky.

A Kusanagi sculpture in the likes of Hachiko Style could be kind of cool. I volunteer to make one.

Ladies if your guy thinks that a good date plan is to visit the site of one of Smap's no talent "talento" public nudity, then you need to get a new boyfriend!! And NOW!

Come on... can't you think of something more romantic, more fun, more intelligent, more engaging, more creative, more anything than visiting midtown for this reason?

So ladies, find a guy who will take you to a great gallery, a wonderful event, a romantic cafe, a nice view or something. But if he takes you to see this new smap landmark, dump him immediately.

Men, if your girl wants to go see this spot, dump her. She's shallow and boring and interested in Smap. Enough said.

tkoind2 -- while I share your sentiment, I think you are missing the mark here. The kind of bubble-headed gal that would want to go to this park with their boyfriend would be bored stiff at a gallery or event. And why waste the time or money for a romantic cafe, when she's satisfied with simply going to the park and taking pictures to email to her equally bubble-headed friends? I mean, seriously, how many fans of SMAP do you think go to museums or galleries? A Softbank store, to see the new handsets, maybe, but that's about the extent of their intellectual curiosity.

Is Kusanagi performing somewhere else? i would not mind to see him, but please do NOT sing

So how much did we pay for him to put his clothes on. If he is a typical j male there is no too much going on below the belt. As a special attraction to the single J ladies I off a special showing of my Secretariat type protruberence.

"thoroughly intoxicated" I love that turn of phrase, it's one notch up from "extremely refreshed"
