Yokozuna Hakuho spends Y1 million for night in Ginza

The group walking down Ginza’s Naimiki-dori, known for its high-end nightclubs, was drawing the attention of all passersby one night in late October. People turned around while others came rushing out of bars and clubs – including hostesses who are accustomed to entertaining prominent figures – for the opportunity to see the popular yokozuna Hakuho with his entourage.

Before long, a considerable number of female fans and hostesses tagged along behind the group led by the sumo champion dressed in fine kimono, like an old-fashioned samurai lord’s procession.

According to one spectator, the core group consisted of eight men, including ozeki Kotomitsuki and comedian Masahiro Ehara. It appears that the yokozuna, in training for the November Kyushu tournament, came out for the night to join a friend’s birthday party.

The group headed to an exclusive membership club. One hostess said Hakuho was quite "dynamic" in his consumption of alcohol, downing one glass after another. “I heard they already had a lavish dinner with drinks at an expensive steakhouse, so I’m pretty sure they’ve easily spent more than a million yen tonight.”

About an hour and a half later, Hakuho emerged through the entrance with the entire female staff that came out to see the grand champion off. At quarter to eleven, the yokozuna got into a car driven by his attendant and headed back to his stable.

Hakuho’s longstanding foe, Asashoryu, is also known to frequent the Ginza district – the rivalry between the two yokozunas is obviously not confined to the sumo ring.

Hirohata,

...the core group consisted of eight men, including ozeki Kotomitsuki and comedian Masahiro Ehara.

That's how they spent it. Actually that's not so much considering there were 8 guys and presumably drinks for the ladies as well.

Wow....how can you spend a million yen in one night. I hope that Hakuho and company will phone me and just give me 10,000 yen. I have been waiting all these years for "dialing for dollars" to phone me.

I once bought 10 burgers at a Burger King in Sweden. That should be in the news also. It cost me 15 dollars.

Exactly, bamboohat. You can't go making titles based on What Some Guy Said.

Misleading headline, 1 million is just some random ho's flippant comment and not an actual figure.

Including the entourage, lots of people easily spend thousands on a birthday bash. Sounds like they had a great time.

Its his life, his money, so why not spend it how he likes?

kp123... I know...the russian bloke in NY... anyway this is just another day and this has gone on for decades, the whole nine yards Ginza Sumo thing above... its business. I had a go at a Sumo cocky entourage 10 years ago and they backed down. Of course thats when I punched myself in the face and told them I was a "sick dude". They are only fatter and I did my time in Boston properly you get smacked carrying around like the guys above.

Hakuho could have been a little moderate in his spending. Not just in Mongolia, but even in New York, Tokyo and Ottawa people are starving.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Daily people are dying for food why he had to expened such money in unncecessary place and why news take big place in Japan why he doesn't donate money for uncief or in Mongolia for street children?

dammit. bamboohat got there first. This is hilariously bad reporting - basically one hostess that wasnt even involved said to someone that she reckons he may have spent around a million yen, and that gets a headline? Someone actually gets paid to write this story? pathetic.

Do they allow foreigners?

Well Hakuho is a foreigner, so that's a good sign.

I'm sure if you pay they'll let you drink Coke and will get a seafood meal for you!

Must be interesting. It will be nice if I visit Ginza’s Naimiki-dori, although I don't drink. I will be glad to order a glass of Coke and seafood meal. Do they allow foreigners?

Maybe Hakuho is better off and happier if he is a monk who is begging for food than spending Y1 million (~$11,000) on alcohol, food, and untold things.

1 million isn't too bad for a big night out with one's entourage.

Haterz can stick to the Club Pure nomihodai and McDs on the way home.

Headline: "dude spends one million yen, blah blah blah"

Actual Story: "I heard that they did this and that so they must've spent at least a million yen"

So the assertion of fact in the headline, the core of this story, is based on a guess based on second hand information of an unnamed "spectator."

Brilliant reporting JT.

Moderator: It's not JT reporting, but Shukan Post reporting.

Perhaps they wanted him to sound more exciting? 1 million for him and his entourage at a hostess bar - seems quite normal....

Why the fuss?? I've seem TV shows that focus on dimwit japanese celebs spending $50,000 if not more (not yen thats dollars) on a bag and then going to the next store and buy dresses for $10,000 a pop.....mostly because the cameras are rolling and they want to show off how money means nothing to them i guess but you get the idea. They think their money will last forever. The other day one celeb went shopping with her father and bought a ridiculously expensive jacket and top (daddy paid of course) then asked daddy to take her to lunch.....so off they went in their helicoptor for a $5000 lunch. Some folks have TOO MUCH money.

Yeah 10 grand is not that much to spend in Ginza, given that there was an entourage. The source of information is inronclad... Being surrounded by all that quality tail and not being able to take any of it home is par for the course here, even for top yokozuna. Some of us shoot birdies (or hole in ones) sometimes hahah.

Pretty reasonable by Ginza standards, equivalent to about $10,000 bucks. Most foreigners think Japanese are crazy to spend that much just to bar-hop. Pretty cheap against what happened last Friday at Nello's in NYC. Roman Abramovich - the Russian tycoon - spent close to $48,000 on a lunch tab for a party 10. He added another $12,000 for the tip (generally 20% tip). So the Russians maybe a little crazier than the Japanese. The bill showed he paid $35,000 for 3 bottles of rare wines (La Tache Romanee, Chateau Petrus and Crystal Rose Magnus)if you're interested in knowing why the bill was so high. So if you head for NYC I recommend all of you have dinner at Nello's at 956 Madison Ave near where I used to work.

Glad to see he goes out and enjoys his money. Is this news trying to smear him? As there is no reporter info or source of the news. Again another crappy news article.

1 million is nothing, I've seen places in Ginza that cost 30,000yen just to sit down.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Why should anyone care if he spent a Million Yen per night. It's his money!...he earned it, the hard way too.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

could we find something less important to report?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

And yeah, why is this news?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

wow! they went out , got drunk & spent some money & this is news???

"He is just doing his bit to get the economy going again."

D'ya think he'll go to McD's to eat some Quarter Pounders?

He is just doing his bit to get the economy going again.

Hahaha some14 - maybe you went to the Japanese school of reading English numbers?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

some14 - We're talking about a million yen here, not 10,000 yen, get with the program, willya?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

This is equivallent to Y10,000 (smller than govt cash handouts Y12,000)that any ordinary man can spend.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

And some people claim Hakuho is boring.

Yokozuna Hakuho spends Y1 million for night in Ginza

I am just sitting here and shaking my head in disbelief this morning, at how a fairly prominent English-language news site can conjure up such a journalistic headline, on the basis that some stripper made up a number in her head when interviewed ? Absolutely incredible. Did Hakuho pay for everyone including his famous TV friend ? Supermarket shelf gossip magazine nonsense. So I take it Japan Today will be employing news stringers in Kabukicho for more insightful headlines then ?

Oh, to be able to live the charmed life and breathe in the rarified air of hostess-ness. For a million en I hope Hakuho at least got... umm, never mind. That's weird, I just realized that 'hostess' starts with 'ho' and 'Hakuho' ends with it.

Shameless!
