43% of Japanese women don’t like guys wearing tank tops

Last week, Japan’s CyberAgent invited women to share their thoughts regarding men’s summer fashion via a survey on anonymous online bulletin board GIRL’S TALK. While the poll in itself was in no way earth-shattering, the results showed that guys who are wanting to impress the ladies may want to think twice before putting on that tank top or swimsuit before heading out for the day.

A whopping 43% of the women who responded to the survey said that they disliked men wearing tank tops, leaving comments such as “I don’t like to see his underarm hair sticking out” and “I don’t like having his armpits in view while eating.” At this rate, men going au naturel will be out of vogue.

In addition, 27% confirmed that they have experienced disillusionment after seeing a guy in his bathing suit:

“When I saw his stomach flab, my seemingly eternal love disappeared in a heartbeat.”

“I felt a sense of defeat seeing my flabby guy next to a toned guy in the pool.”

“He was so pale that he blended in with the beach itself…”

C’mon, isn’t that being a little harsh, ladies? Not all men need to have a physique for competing on Ninja Warrior.

On the other hand, the majority 73% of women who responded that they have never experienced disillusionment with their guy’s swimsuit body seemed to have found their boyfriends on that show:

“I fell in love all over again with his gorgeous bod!”

“My heart beat faster after seeing his chiseled abs.”

But thank goodness that there ARE some kind souls out there – a few women had encouraging things to say, like “He had a little belly but it was cute,” and “I won’t hate him no matter what he looks like.” Here’s to a summer of fun in the sun, without worrying about body type!

hmmm, seems like to me, these women are all superficial that make these kind of childish comments. If they really and truly love their partner, it shouldn't matter, if they don't like it, find a more muscular guy or if his hairy underarm pits scare you ask him to shave, this is what gets me in Japan, the lack of communication between partners. My wife wears what she wants, but if she wears something and I feel it will not look good on her, I will advise her and give my opinion, but I would never make her wear something she didn't want to and it should go both ways, the woman should advise her man, just talk and have proper and decent communication with each other. Also, some men might not like the way their partners body looks depending on what they are wearing or the shape of their bodies. I just get tired of hearing these superficial people that really only care about what they like and want in life and less about others. Which do you prefer, a good person or a good looking person, which is more important?

I wonder how many women took part. 100? 1000? 10,0000? Age? Late teens?

Ewww, a man with shaved armpits. Now that would really be kimochi warui!

And now for some real Angst:

the poll about how men prefer their women in bathing suits, and the women's reactions!!!

Bring it on!

These tops are very tacky. I used to live next to a military base and the sight of vests in summer and skintight t-shirts in the bar in the middle of winter was pretty laughable. That said, at least they were in shape. Some of the men in my office should really do something about the pot-bellies and love handles if they want to wear fitted shirts. Wear what suits you but men in vests remind me of narcissistic military-types, monster truck lovin' yokels with highlighted mullets or older men on holidays wearing socks and crocs.

I'm not going to lie, I'm a big muscular guy so on me, tank tops look good and I do get a lot of compliments from the ladies, but one day a long time ago, my mom saw my hair poking from the sides and she said, you should shave that. I never would have thought MY MOM who was old fashioned would ever say something like that. Needless to say, I tried it, felt very awkward, but got used to it fairly quickly and now I agree, if you have the shape and body, it looks good, but if you are skinnier then a twig, forget it!

What the heck is a "yokel?"

I thought it was a vest. To those of us in the UK a tank top is a sleeveless jumper. So "43% of Japanese women don't like guys wearing vests" makes more sense.

As for these quotes...

“When I saw his stomach flab, my seemingly eternal love disappeared in a heartbeat.”

“I felt a sense of defeat seeing my flabby guy next to a toned guy in the pool.”

“He was so pale that he blended in with the beach itself…”

Shallow, ladies,,, really shallow.

'I'm not going to lie, I'm a big muscular guy so on me, tank tops look good'

Dear, oh dear. Not a dry seat in the house when Bass is in town, eh?

A 'yokel' is an idiot from the countryside. I thought a professional writer would have known that. I had the pleasure of living in the south of the US and visiting some real backwaters. My lingering memories were mullets, Jesus, dry counties and men wearing vests ( sometimes it wasn't even warm, never mind hot ).

Yokels are also called bumpkins... spending their days going "oh arr" and chewing on a straw while imparting local knowledge to the uninterested. In America they would be as Jimizo described... baseball cap wearing, mulleted red necks with pick up trucks, 'squirl guns' and a fear of anything remotely complicated.

Let's be honest, a large percentage of the male population here are, let me say, "in touch with their feminine side". You can't wear a tank top if you're not built!

Sighclops... we've worn vests since they were invented as a garment of underwear. How many of us British people had to do PE in our pants and vests because we forgot our PE kit? It's only the poseurs who have made vests/tank tops the garment of choice for those who love their own bodies and no doubt wax their chests and strut about for the benefit of the ladies.

Last guy who looked cool in a vest was Bruce Willis.

Have you ever been outside of Japan in the summertime? I don't know, possibly a hot country like Australia? Singlets / "vests" / tank tops are the norm...

Maybe men have problems with all the exposure girls in Japan show. Can't count how many times I've been at Mcdonalds and students have been sitting with legs wide open while I'm trying to eat.

My wife often derides my disregard for fashion. However, when we went to Australia and California, even I was taken aback by the appalling things we saw. I once heard my wife describe Australia as a warm England with the morals of 50 years ago and the fashions of 15 years ago. I disagreed, I couldn't remember seeing such atrocious clothes in England 15 years ago.

Ah, no. There ain't man on Earth who looks good in tank tops/vests.

Men with a nice body deserve the bragging right to wear a tank top, but a tight t-shirt is equally effective and help to curve the unappealing tuff of armpit hair.

There is always a good reason for hair anywhere on the body to be removed or trimmed. There are some places on the body I think Japanese women are also behind the times in terms of grooming.

Seems like a promo in some American gay magazine. LOL.

In related news, 100% of men like women wearing tank tops.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Ok. I don't go to the beach or pools per se but if someone has an arm pit that looks like the wolverine, some basic trimming might be in order. I don't see any tank toppers, maybe a few young guys but that's about all.

“When I saw his stomach flab, my seemingly eternal love disappeared in a heartbeat.”

Fabulous. Encapsulates so much about how a significant portion of our females compatriots think. "tarento" anyone?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Well, it makes sense. From an evolutionary perpective, a healthy adult male symbolized a man who was able to hunt and provide. Just like we men are turned on by big breasts and wide hips, ie. a healthy female who is able to provide babies. Since 80 percent of adult males don't have perfect abs, a tank top ain't gonna look good. Also from a fashion perspective, a tank is fine if one is at home, going to the beach, etc. but otherwise, guys NO! It's kind of like adult males wearing skin tight shorts.

I never knew they were called "vests". Where I'm from in the US in polite speech/newspapers we say tank tops, but actually that means the women's version in casual speech and the garment for men is referred to as a "wife-beater" :P

I think a tank top looks best with a toned body (well, bikinis look best on toned female bodies don't they?)and is ok at the beach, a casual restaurant, or summer festival, but not for an afternoon date in the city. My man wears what he wants, in the rare case it doesn't fit the occasion I give him a gentle reminder^^

99% comfort 1% fashion= me

1 ( +1 / -0 )

to be honest, I do sometimes wish men would at least trim their pit hair, if not remove it altogether. How would they like it if I went around in a sleeveless blouse and unshaved?

I agree, but there are some men out there that do love the Mediterranean look.

Haha this all great stuff! I wear tank tops around the house & at my office too(work alone) & on occasion out & about no big deal, its all cool biz as far as I am concerned once your over 30C! If its under 30C its often a standard t-shirt!

Wear whats comfortable folks, mind a tiny bit what others may think, but only a bit, not worth the worry haha!
