48%?? Doubt it. I would bumped that up to nearly 100% and agree with it. Comments, cat calls, car honks... all sexual harassment but people don't usually refer to all things as harassment. I think sometimes things are a bit too PC but at the same time, plenty of people with their heads in the sand about this. Huge issue and will continue to follow women into their workforce as the men get away with it. Indeed, sometimes it is a joke - and you can laugh it off - but other times it just goes too far.

Sad that being called gay is seen as an insult.

Can anybody explain how a man can express interest in a woman and ensure that his advance is not interpreted as harassment.

Sexual harassment is not only harmful, but costly and creates confusion because it obscures the boundary between professional roles and personal relationships. It doesn't always have to be the opposite sex however it is a worldwide phenomenon and a epidemic at schools and increasing in numbers at workplaces. Prevention is probably the best tool to eliminate sexual harassment. Good policies and procedures that specifically addresses sexual harassment is extremely important including effective means for promptly and appropriately responding to sexual harassment complaints. Hence policies should also prohibit retaliation against persons who bring accusations of discrimination.

Talk to the person you're interested in, in a respectful, calm, and non-intimidating way, to ask to meet socially. If you get a "No thanks", move on...

Issuing very personal comments about appearance can be off-putting to some, rather than ice-breaking, from a complete stranger. That kind of familiarity assumes too much, and might have the opposite effect of what a compliment to someone you know better, would bring...

Act as you would like someone to act with a female family member...

Harassment is when a woman says no thanks to man, but he won't accept her answer, and persists in a more forceful way...

Children harass each other in one or the other way. That some of it becomes sexual harassment during puberty is no surprise. When you take into account that sexual "maturity" comes a bit earlier for every generation we should expect slowly rising numbers. So, like tmarie, I'd have expected higher numbers.

Pamelot, I would agree with everything but the last part. Women are guilty as well!!

What constitutes sexual harrassment though, some small remark meant as a compliment can be construed to be harrassment by some of the PC brigade.

But they reported that

87% of those students said the experience had a negative impact on them,

so maybe the other 13% actually enjoyed it and it helped their confiidence and self esteem. Just saying .

Harassment is agressive pressure or intimidation. I think this research measured something else... This means that if as a woman you can still react and are just annoyed it is not harassment.

So basically, A man is supposed to tippy toe around the woman like a fairy and ask "Would you happen to like to meet socially?"

What kind of society are we creating here. Whatever happened to courtship?

What if a man asks extremely politely, as politely as he can and the woman claims that she was offended by the advance and that she felt uncomfortable when she was asked to meet socially. I'm where the hammer would fall in that case, my guess is that it'd fall right on the man's head.

48% of U.S. students face sexual harassment: survey

Other surverys indicate that 67 percent of all women are complete drama queens

Also, 72 percent of males and 83 percent of females could not give a proper definition of sexual harrassment when asked. Of those, 33 percent from each group still could not when given access to the internet and 15 minutes to make a search.

What do these statistics all have in common, including the one quoted? They were all totally unsubstatiated banter. 48 percent may believe they were subjected to sexual harrassment, but that does not mean they actually were. And part of why they believe is the popularity of the term. 30 years ago, it was not a buzzword and far fewer would have had this negative effect, which is at least partially a placebo effect now.

Boom! I bet 25 percent of all women at least, would call that sexual harrassment if they disliked the guy, or for any reason whatsoever and nothing to do with the guy, felt uncomfortable.

The trouble with sexual harrassment is that the women furthering the term did not bother to furnish everyone with clear guidelines, and both men and women need them. And the trouble with that will be the simple fact that young women tend not to respond to those who formally follow the rules, but rather go for the bad boy type who is actually guilty of sexual harrassment type behavior but is otherwise charming, to them anyway.
