I've heard, and read, that it's not a particularly technical or difficult climb. It's just really long, really cold, and really, really high up.
Reaching the base camp itself is much harder in case of K2.

The story about Everest is pure greed mixed with pure human ego. What other motive than ego can be to climb it through dying or frozen bodies of less lucky companions? And what other motive than greed to keep this mountain open for climbers if 1% of them never comes back.
