Get ready for the opening of Takanawa Gateway City, a vibrant new development just a few steps from Takanawa Gateway Station in Tokyo. Spearheaded by JR East, this urban project is a new platform where the environment, innovation and lifestyle come together.
Spanning approximately 13 hectares when fully developed, this expanding urban hub will be a groundbreaking mix of residential, business, and cultural spaces. The complex consists of four districts: composite buildings, The Linkpillar 1 North/South and The LinkPillar 2; cultural innovation building, MoN Takanawa The Museum of Narratives; and the residential block, Takanawa Gateway City Residence. The current phase, covering about 9.5 hectares, will be the largest station-connected development in Japan.

On Thursday, The LinkPillar 1 and the station plaza open, and the redesigned Takanawa Gateway Station will launch fully.
The city’s design vision is all about creating a "Global Gateway”, aiming to be an “experimental space for a rich life 100 years into the future". The symbolic rainbow-colored art installation "100 colors no.53 100 colors path” by a Tokyo based French designer, Emmanuelle Moureaux, catches the eye in Gateway Park, as soon as you exit the station gate.
Autonomous mobility vehicles on which visitors can ride for free run in Gateway Park. Although initially limited to The LinkPillar 1, the opening will allow for much more expansive use. Here, robots freely come and go, some of which run on fuel cells, whether they are delivering lunch, on security watch or scrubbing the floor.

The ground floor also features a fascinating exhibition on the 150-year history of the area, including artifacts from the Takanawa dike. And for a deeper dive into the region’s transportation evolution, the Takanawa Link Scape AR program will immerse you in how railroads have shaped life, with a glimpse into future mobility.
The LinkPillar 1 boasts a massive 38,000 square meters of space, with the North tower rising 29 floors and the South tower 30 floors. The 6th floor of the North tower fosters The Takanawa Gateway Link Scholars' Hub (LiSH), providing a collaborative space for over 100 startups, particularly in deep-tech fields. In partnership with the University of Tokyo and National University of Singapore, LiSH is primed to become a key player in enriching our lives with their state-of-the-art lab facilities and network of academia.

Takanawa Gateway Convention Center is a MICE facility located on the 2nd basement floor, 1st basement floor and 6th floor of The Linkpillar 1 South. In addition to the multi-purpose Linkpillar Hall is one of the largest facilities in central Tokyo that is directly connected to a station.
NEWoMan Takanawa Link Market will spread across 300 meters, offering a satisfying culinary and shopping experience. On the retail front, Blue Bottle Coffee and Nicolai Bergmann are among the first to open on March 27, with full completion expected by 2026.
“Ekinaka”, or inside the station, houses Maison Classic Salon and Cafe. Enjoy the sense of ultimate luxury on the terrace seats, overlooking commuters, while you try their signature pancakes or gobble a fresh Crème Brûlée Cream Puff from the adjacent Maison Classic Factory. The scent of vanilla beans from the creampuff factory fills the station and titillates all.

Just outside the station is a select shop Machi-aru Kitchen where one can discover hidden gems of the Takazawa area. I made a great find of Tokyo craft beer with Takanawa honey from Fetish Club, Edo Kaijo sake brewed at Tokyo Port Brewery, Passage Coffee’s blend coffee designated to add Takanawa honey, and rice floor bread from Komeichi - all head stores located in Minato Ward.

Clubbers and art-lovers are gearing up for Zero-site Takanawa Gateway to run from March 27 to July 31. The night museum bar on weekdays turns into a music bar and club on the weekends. The Danley Sound Labs sound system, introduced for the first time in Japan, is installed on the third floor, and Void Acoustics on the second floor lounge. With the pioneering kinetic art, and ethical food and drinks, this space will take you on a sensational immersive voyage.

Whether you’re in the mood for cutting-edge tech, cultural engagement or just looking for somewhere to hang out, Takanawa Gateway City promises to be the next must-visit destination in Tokyo. Looking ahead, yet to come are luxury hotel brand JW Marriott, a Minato Ward-approved nursery school, an international school, clinic and a flying taxi service.
Takanawa Gateway City is located at 2-21 Takanawa, Minato-ku, Tokyo.
