These days, the need for recyclable and reusable packaging is becoming more and more apparent. In recent years, Coca-Cola Japan has been making attempts to make their products more eco-friendly, such as removing the plastic labeling from drinks and reducing the amount of electricity needed to run their vending machines.
Their latest campaign comes off the back of an announcement made by the Coca-Cola Co to make 25 percent of its packaging globally to be reusable by 2030. Reusable packaging includes returnable glass bottles, refillable PET bottles or selling products through traditional fountain or Coca-Cola dispensers.
In order to help achieve this goal, Coca Cola Japan have been working on a project called the Bon Aqua Water Bar. The Bon Aqua Water Bar is a self-serve water dispenser that offers users five different kinds of water — cold water, room temperature water, hot water, and carbonated water (strong and weak).

Users can fill any bottle with purified water from the machine for 60 yen a time. For those without a drink bottle on hand, paper cups are available for 70 yen ($0.61) and come in two sizes , medium (240 milliliters) or large (430 milliliters).
Specialized 380-milliliter Bon Aqua drinks bottles are also available for 260 yen (which includes the water inside), and are the only usable bottles if you want to get carbonated water from the machine.
The Coca-Cola Company hopes that Bon Aqua Water Bar will make drinking purified water affordable without consumers having to worry about plastic pollution. The Water Bar was piloted in December last year at Universal Studios Japan and is currently being tested at Tiger Corporation in Osaka.
Fingers crossed the project helps Coca Cola move closer to their goal of less plastic pollution.

Such water bottle filling machines are common in the US. I would never use one however. They are unsanitary unless exceptionally well maintained. A US based lab went around testing water drawn from vending machines and they almost universally dispensed bacteria and other contaminants that are not present is municipal tap water and if they were, the system would have to be shut down and disinfected. There is no practical way to keep them sanitary if they are in public places and used by all and sundry.

They always try so many strange things and new designed ideas or products with strange tastes or ingredients, but as a fan for quite some decades I really must say that they better should concentrate on their main product and bring back the delicious and chilled original Coca Cola in the small glass bottles. Best taste and also reusable…That’s what the real fan and standard consumer wants, not any simple water in own bottles or whatever, that’s something you can have almost free in your own kitchen, from any other free public water serving machine or fill it up yourself in the mountains, temples, road stations etc and has almost nothing to do with the Coca Cola brand.

The plastic pollution is a serious problem, however since the material is so convenient it will be hard to reduce.
About Cococolas, I already have a glass filling machine. It is called a water tap.
Refusing to put that brown sugary gunk in your body is a first step for good health.

Prior to Covid the list of "Free" water refill locations in Japan was growing rapidly.
These are not places you go to fill your water bottles for home but are places to refill when out.
As for home nearly every supermarket neary home in Tokyo and all over Japan have these purified water refill dispensers.
They don't usually do small bottles but 2L size and often free once you purchase the reusable bottle.
Seems Coca-Cola is looking to make money on what is already available for free and many places.
