Concept bra will give you pep talks, help you take perfect selfies

By Casey Baseel, RocketNews24

Usually, lingerie maker Triumph International Japan takes about half a year between announcing its innovative and unusual concept bras. So since it’s been about six months since we saw the company’s paired Close Sisters Bras, we figured the its next design highlighting a social trend was just about due.

Sure enough, last week Triumph showed off its newest creation: a bra that’ll give you verbal pep talks and also help you snap selfies.

Like with the other offbeat Triumph bra and panty sets we’ve looked at, the company isn’t serious about marketing and selling the new Wearable Womanliness-Boosting Bra. Rather, it’s an opportunity for designers to let their imaginations roam free as they envision new ways to cup and support a woman’s breasts.

Being an article of clothing, the Wearable Womanliness-Boosting Bra’s name might seem a little redundant, but the “wearable” is a reference to the rise of wearable devices. For starters, slipping your smartphone into the heart-shaped sheath attached to the skirt will record such health-related data as the number of steps you’ve taken during the day, distance travelled, calories burned, and also the number of hours you’ve slept.

But while Triumph is, on the surface, an undergarment maker, the company says its real goal is to make women feel better about themselves. That’s why aside from being designed to produce a sleek silhouette, the Wearable Womanliness-Boosting Bra is capable of responding to your voice with confidence-bolstering compliments. Mention you’ve got a big presentation at work that you’re nervous about, and the bra will speak, reminding you “If you give it your best, you’ll be OK! Go for it!” Ask “Do I look beautiful?” and it’ll answer “Very beautiful!” Go with the more general question “How do I seem today?” and the bra will tell you you’re “Totally radiant!”

That radiance is both figurative and literal, by the way. According to Triumph’s press release, a string of lights along the straps and top edge of the bra can be activated by saying “Illuminate my bust, décolletage magical light on ★!” We’re not sure exactly how you’re supposed to pronounce “★,” (and we’re really not 100% sure about décolletage, either) but saying the words will switch on the lights

If all of this has you feeling so good you need to snap a photo of your confident smile, you’ll find a selfie stick waiting in the loops on either side of the Wearable Womanliness-Boosting Bra. The skirt can even be detached and converted into a photography board reflector to give you the perfect lighting.

Who you’re going to send that scantily clad photo to, however, is something you’ll have to figure out on your own. Speaking of romantic relationships, the final function of the Wearable Womanliness-Boosting Bra is designed to help you overcome any lingering shyness in showing your feelings to the secret object of your affection. By pressing the “heartbeat switch” on the side of the bra, the garment will measure your heartbeat and flash its lights in unison with your cardiac rhythm.

Although honestly, if you’re already with a guy and willingly showing him your bra, we think he’s going to get the message about how you feel even without the blinking light show.

Does Triumph have a special department responsible for coming up with these wacky ideas every six months? And if so, can I work there please?

I think most of the posters here are making a mole hill into a mountain!

And I think most of the posters have seriously been deprived of seeing, less conquering the mountain.

Only padded bra are successful in Japan.

She looks like a 12 year old with the body shape of a prepubescent boy.

You worry me, mate.

a bra that’ll give you verbal pep talks and also help you snap selfies.

A more useful function might be advice such as, "You probably shouldn't take that selfie."

I'm assuming that by-prefecture survey above is based on Japanese cup sizes which, as anyone who has bought bras in this country can attest, do not match those used in the rest of the world. A Japanese "D" is basically B-sized cups filled 70% with padding.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

They can wear a bras if it makes them feel sexy but when it comes down to it, pardon the pun, they may as well leave it on. Personally though I like the petite figure J women have.

mrkobayashi: "Only Saitama is A cup. Tohoku prefectures are pretty impressive."

Must be quite the job, compiling those stats. haha.

Readers, please stop bickering. It's just a humorous story.

Strangerland: "And I answered your question. In this case, it's whatever the poster had in mind when he made his comment. The logic is there, even if you can't grasp it smith."

No, you did not answer it, because you knew you were wrong to suggest all Western bodies fit into one type -- which you very well did, so stop denying it -- and you can never admit when you are wrong. Period. The only one not seeing the logic is you. Worse, you seem to be trying to create your own. Here's your comment:

"Are you not able to accept that there are other body types than Western ones,"

and so I'll ask again, what's a "Western one", and don't say "What the poster meant" especially since the poster never said anything about western or non-western bodies at all. YOU took the comment and applied to YOUR beliefs of what western/Asian bodies are like, so tell us, my friend, what they are, since you group them all into one.

"I never claimed there was, so that's quite the strawman you've built up there."

Yes, you did. I just showed you again that you did.

It ranked, with colored maps even, the average breast size for countries all around the world. And guess what -- Japan is a "A" cup size. The lowest/smallest category. LOL.

Good post jerseyboy! I've always wondered where they'd rank. Knew it would be low, but Christ! The lowest category?? LoL-

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

and her fat content is zilch.

And that's a negative?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

They don't need foolishness like this to cup and support women's breasts. That's what men are for.

I know this women! It is Miss Kori from the Hanshin Tiger,s Cheer squad. O O O-O Hanshin Tigers Fare Fare Fare-Fare

Japan is a "A" cup size. The lowest/smallest category. LOL

An over 50 year old guy who used to live in Japan, obsessing over the cup size of Japanese women. Creepy.

-3 ( +5 / -8 )

She looks like a 12 year old with the body shape of a prepubescent boy.

You suspect that this is a trap?

Naah, my eyesight isn't that bad!

5 ( +5 / -0 )

smmertime you will see shorts so short they may as well not be wearing any.

I love that.

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

Another factor could be Japanese women generally don't (think it appropriate to) advertize their possessions.

Bull! They dont flash cleavage because they dont have any. But smmertime you will see shorts so short they may as well not be wearing any.

-9 ( +1 / -10 )

@Jersey just because you are one doesn't mean every woman in Japan has them, there are plenty, PLENTY of Japanese women with fuller bodies, Norika Fujiwara just for one out of millions, just coz you didn't get any, doesn't mean it isn't so. Norika would look great in a chatty bra.

You folks are delusional. If you had taken even 30 seconds to Google the subject (great invention, by the way) you would have stumbled across a Huffington Post article from 2012. It ranked, with colored maps even, the average breast size for countries all around the world. And guess what -- Japan is a "A" cup size. The lowest/smallest category. LOL.

Strangerland: "And the sky is blue. Both being points that aren't relevant to the current conversation."

They are when we are talking about people's bodies appearing in commercialism, and when you talk about how people see the bodies of twelve year olds.

The comment in question was that the girl had the body of a pre-pubescent 12 year old boy. Nothing to do with commercialism, nothing to do with magazines. Your comment was entirely irrelevant.

So now, on top of calling most posters on this site "illogical", you can read minds.

I don't need to read minds - I can use logic. The girl in the picture would be considered to have a pre-pubescent 12 year old boys body by someone used to more curves - likely a westerner.

You made generalizations as to the body types of Westerners and Asians, so I ask you, since all Westerners fit in one category according to you, what a "western body" is.

And I answered your question. In this case, it's whatever the poster had in mind when he made his comment.

The logic is there, even if you can't grasp it smith.

On the contrary I believe there is no "western body" of any specific type any more than there is one specific type of "Asian body"

I never claimed there was, so that's quite the strawman you've built up there.

She has no curves or shape and her fat content is zilch.

As is the case with a significant number of adult Asian women - all of whom are not pre-pubescent 12 year old boys.

Seriously do a lot of you want to go down the Lolicomplex that is so prevalent in Japan?

It has nothing to do with the current topic, and has nothing to do with the fact that many Asian/Japanese women have slim small bodies.

Cute really is different from amazing and sexy. My cat is cute and my 12 year old niece is cute, but sexy, as the root of the word implies, has more loaded overtones and that girl, like my cat and my niece is not sexy or amazing.

Cute and sexy are quite arbitrary, and you'll never get a consensus on them. So it's really quite irrelevant what you think.

"Whatever body the poster had in mind when they referred to the girl in the image as having a prepubescent 12 year old boy's body."

So now, on top of calling most posters on this site "illogical", you can read minds. You made generalizations as to the body types of Westerners and Asians, so I ask you, since all Westerners fit in one category according to you, what a "western body" is. Not being endowed gives a choice to wear or not to wear.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

She's slender, pretty and all woman in my eyes.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

don't forget that a lot of magazines here intentionally exploit the bodies of little girls in their magazines, and it's acceptable.

And the sky is blue. Both being points that aren't relevant to the current conversation.

Do tell us what a 'Western body" is.

Whatever body the poster had in mind when they referred to the girl in the image as having a prepubescent 12 year old boy's body.

-2 ( +5 / -7 )

Good old Triumph.....they are almost like an annual tradition in Japan with their new bra ideas - theres hanami, azabu juban matsuri, Tokyo hanabi and then there's Triumph! Bless em!

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Strangerland: "She doesn't look 12 for an Asian."

I agree with you, but don't forget that a lot of magazines here intentionally exploit the bodies of little girls in their magazines, and it's acceptable.

"Are you not able to accept that there are other body types than Western ones, and that Western doesn't equate to better?"

Do tell us what a 'Western body" is. The bra here, despite the company saying it is not intended for sale or typical use but to expand creativity with the garment, is ridiculous enough without saying all bodies of Westerners fit into one type in defense of Asians having different bodies of all things.

2 ( +8 / -6 )

There are plenty of overly-endowed, well-endowed, and just plain endowed women here in Japan

Very true. It's less a matter of definitions, but more one of taste or the lack of it or a grasp of proportions. Another factor could be Japanese women generally don't (think it appropriate to) advertize their possessions.

1 ( +4 / -3 )

@ jerseyboy - There are plenty of overly-endowed, well-endowed, and just plain endowed women here in Japan.

sensei258 -- LOL. You must have different definitions, or things have changed dramatically since I left four years ago.

-13 ( +1 / -14 )

She looks like a 12 year old with the body shape of a prepubescent boy.

Only when viewed through the lens of a westerner. She doesn't look 12 for an Asian, nor is that a prepubescent Asian body. Are you not able to accept that there are other body types than Western ones, and that Western doesn't equate to better?

3 ( +7 / -4 )

I often wonder why bra models are chosen from amongst those who barely need one. It seems to be the same every six months. While I guess most models are modeling something they don't need, and mostly that none of us need, this particular case seems to highlight the rather unsophisticated advertising techniques I see everywhere. These usually seem to fall into one of two categories: find a famous person or make it ridiculous (Say, have people or something else dance the ad, especially those who don't usually dance like policemen or fish). This bra is certainly ridiculous but I am not sure if she is famous.

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

What on earth are those things on the left and right of the bra? On the left it looks like some sort of a clip... perhaps an attachment for the iphone? And on the right... a nightstick? I mean with the violence towards women in Japan a nightstick might be a good idea... but surely a neat collapsible one would be easier to manage?

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

You know, for a country who's women are certainly not "overly endowed", there sure seems to be a disporoportionate fascination with bras there.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

Yup, now I've just about seen it all. A bra that chats you up and helps you do 'somethings' as if pushing up and making the twins look perky and inviting wasn't enough...
