To those mentioned I would add dwarf irises.
Bulbs are good in pots (planted very close together, and sometimes in multiple layers). That makes them a good choice for those thin strips in front of Japanese homes. Bulbs prefer gritty compost but they will grow in pretty much anything. I generally re-use coir for bulb pots. In the garden, grow them in patches.
Try to plant them where they have some wind protection. In a windy location, choose the smaller crocuses over the larger 'Dutch' ones. My squirrels repeatedly dig up some bulbs, but leave most of them untouched. The best solution is simply to plant lots of them. And feed the squirrels in another part of the garden.
