Face tattoos: A trend that is here to stay?

Perhaps, but calling them that for how they choose to look is a little different, I think.

If I have two equally skilled candidates to interview for a job opening, one has visible tattoos and one doesn't, guess who's getting the job. Not the guy with Bugs Bunny on his face. The guy who was smart enough to keep any ink he might have in areas that could be hidden shows much more sense than the guy wanting the world to see he makes bad choices.

I have a single tattoo myself. On my shoulder where a simple short sleeve shirt can cover it.

Horrifying. Run away.

If the tattoo is for the sake of provocation, just admit others can be offended (which is the objective) and accept there could be some social consequences.

Otherwise, who care?

All that stuff about tattoos in your family has nothing to do with tattooing your face. You’re the one making up arguments.

That's a pretty limited choice you give there. Not that there's anything wrong with any of those professions.

Plenty of my family have tats and none of them were impeded in the employment stakes. My grandfather got one in the 30s and seemed to do just fine. The doctors, nurses, brickies, lawyers, politicians and cops I know who have ink don't seem to have been held back, either.

And I haven't done too bad, either. Here or in other countries.

I was thinking of tattooing my face with a permanent smile, because people like people who smile, so I heard.

Here in the UK face and hand tattoos are found on people who want an excuse not to work. "They discriminated against me because of my face tattoo".

Same in Australia there are regular "feel sorry for" news articles about someone with a face tattoo cant get a job.

Personally tattoo's are a waste of money, then as the person ages they look disgusting. I hope Japanese use common sense and don't get any.

I think they look horrible, but if a heavily tattooed, including face, guy or girl will come to my office, if he/she is good, I will give him/her a job. It's 2019 for God's sake, even in Japan! In private, I personally don't like big tats, but I find a discreet tattoo on a nice body very sexy

I wonder how long some of the posters here have been away from the west. Tattoos in normal society are pretty standard. I meet with the western equivalent of salarymen regularly, and often they will have tattoos nowadays.

I think face tattoos are not at that level of acceptance yet in the West. But tattoos in general are very accepted in the West these days. Not like when I left the west for Japan 20+ years ago.

Bad life choices for sure. As already posted, they're fine with certain lifestyles and people but the everyday man, no way.

It's funny when non Japanese get tattoos with Kanji written but find out the Kanji on them is a different meaning the artist did on purpose, so becareful which Kanji they write on you...

The really edgy artists and athletes used to be the ones with tons of tats. Now it's the Adam Levines (baring it all for Super Bowl halftime) and Miley Cyruses of the world. Even at the upcoming NBA all star game, I'll bet many of the starters are either tat-free or are minimally inked--look at guys like Steph, Klay, and Giannis who just let their great play do the talking. It's a trend that will pass out of the mainstream except in less with-it backwaters of the planet.

There is quite a difference on what type of face tattoo as well, coming from New Zealand the Moko or Ta Moko (Traditional Maori face tattoo) are not uncommon and come with cultural and historic background I feel these fall into a totally different catagory than having a cartoon character or some words randomly tattooed on the face. I guess both tell a tale of who you are..

So much snobbery about tattoos. They've been with us for centuries, get over it. Nobody's forcing you to have one done.

I don't have a problem with face tattoos as an idea, but I just think the face is not great for placement. It's rare that tattoos feel like they fit into the area, they end up just looking forced or out of place. One of the few face tattoos I've ever liked is Mike Tyson's - it's good placement, and works with the contours of the face rather than just being dumped there. I remember when he first got it, I thought "oh no", but then I saw it and though "oh, actually that's pretty good".

I agree that face tattoos are becoming common but would still face stigma from the majority of society but with all of the liberal thinking of the world today, I wouldn't be surprised if it goes mainstream and becomes a trend. It looks good on pacific islanders, but would still look out of place if you'd be in a suit and tie while presenting your bosses

Face tattoos are just a demonstration of lack of foresight and impulse control. Nobody can predict the future for their life, but everyone can avoid the easy pitfalls.

People are free to do as they like if it harms no one else, but people should think about the future and how these tattoos will look then.

They look scary and dangerous. They won't find a job in Japan, or be accepted to enter a gym or onsen.

Tattoos are ok on men, but look terrible on women.
