Maybe it will help the otaku in their spare time.

Yep! It's perverted!

If you fall in love with a robot (or opposite-sex human or same-sex human), the next natural step is to get married. I can imagine that, in not so distant future, some countries start legalizing such marriage.
Strangerland
Unlikely until the AI reaches a point where it can consent.
Strangerland
Both perverted and practical.
On a lower level, women have been using vibrators, which themselves are a simple robot, as sex toys for years.

Can Samantha be taught to cook??

Interesting times ahead in this area folks! Whether you agree or not with sex robots(due note that Kathleen Richardson say NOTHING about male robots, rather telling!!) & YES women have been using small sex toys for DECADES a bit hypocritical.
Lets cut to the chase here, I think some women will feel threatened by the new competition, least they should admit it!
Lots of western societies are making traditional marriages MUCH less appealing than in the past, the extremely high likelihood of failure & the amount men are told to pay, is scaring more & more men away from marriage, more women are also CHOOSING to stay single for their own various reasons.
Some we shouldn't be surprised at all by these new robots. The women is this article need to research some REAL reasons about their being against these robots, running off at the mouth about rape culture etc is too disingenuous, they should be more honest & forget the smoke screens
Ali Khan
the next thing is that your are going to start war between robots and human being, all robots will be there to free there fellow robotbeings from sex-salves centers and at the end they will declare humans as unrobotic in their nature and co-existence is not possible any more.

How long before AI achieves sentience? Regarding the idea of love; I recommend the film Her.

re robots for women.
Theres a huge difference between a robot and a vibrator or toy..
this is just creepy and weird.
""I'm ready, what about you? I hope you are. I enjoy being with you, always,"
How could anyone want to hear that from a robot?
hearing that kind of thing from a person is nice. Hearing it from a robot and feeling happy is either pathetic or indicative of mental illness.
I suggest engineers put their talents to better use.
too weird

As it says in the article, Kathleen Richardson has been studying robotics for over a decade. I think she knows more about the reasons than you do.
And for the people comparing these robots to sex-toys: The two can fulfill very different purposes. A sex-toy is purely for sexual pleasure. These robots seem to be something more, an aim to replace a full human. Those can't be compared.

A very interesting subject. Would a conscious, artificially intelligent entity want to have sex with a human? We will have to wait and find out. Sex between a non-conscious entity and a human would resemble masturbation, and maybe rape.
Strangerland
Not really. In the context of this article they are both machines meant to provide sexual pleasure.
Why? Sexual pleasure is a major driving instinct of humanity. It's something that 99% of us have as a common interest. And when it comes to machines, there are no diseases, pregnancy, or most importantly hurt feelings with which to deal. So what's the problem? Why shouldn't engineers put their attention towards this?
Masturbation, yes. Rape? Hardly. The problem with rape is that it is forcing an individual with self-determination to do something against their behaviour, which can destroy someone mentally. Same as you can't rape a vibrator, you cannot rape a robot.

Strangerland
I disagree that even the article equates vibrators and robots. These robots do not "just" provide sexual pleasure. If that was so, they wouldn't be able to replace prostitutes, who are real people and therefore does something else than a sex-toy. If not, why would anyone go to a brothel instead of taking care of it at home? If they weren't meant to do something more, I doubt they would strive to make them appear and sound so "real."
Strangerland
So what exactly is this 'something else' you refer to?
And conversely what non-sexual thing is it that prostitues provide that a sex toy doesn't?
Because there are no sex toys that provide sexual pleasure as good as a real live human. But that's a difference in degree of sexual pleasure, not some other unknown thing.
And going back to your original comment, the idea that robots could replace human prostitues is entirely hypothetical. Part of the sexual pleasure that comes from having consentual sex with another human is the knowledge that someone has consented to have sex with you. That's something a non-sentient robot could never do, which is why I would suspect that a human will always be preferable for sex for many people. That's one reason why many people are not into prostitues as well, because said consent comes from a financial reimbursement rather than an attraction to the person.

This will take off for sure. While I think robots might actually be a bit boring, I can imagine women working as "remote prostitutes" at some point. They will wear a virtual headset/suit and perform sex remotely. The client/john will be getting it on with a robot that is being controlled by a female. So the words and actions will be hers, but will be spoken and performed by the robot.
It will certainly make prostitution much safer.
So far as people who think it's weird, nobody is forced to join in. I find that many people with dissatisfactory sex lives are dissatisfied because they are afraid to be honest about their "weird" desires. Maybe they can be more honest with a robot.

Regardless of personal opinion, these things will be as common as dildos in a few years.
Ah_so
This is a great thing for those without partners. A step up from solo maturation and may come a little closer to the real experience.

I don't think sex with robots is good for society. But I agree that these things will continue to become more and more realistic. (There's a documentary on YouTube about building the first anatomically correct male sex doll, and, aparantly, men too should be ..er...nervous..)
This is happening folks. We're not in Kansas anymore.

It's useless to ask if it's moral or not to have sex with non-Human, cause infinite loop of debate and not here I seen this kind of debate, it's become little boring.
It's better to ask directly if you are ready to sex with a sex doll and robot in future.
Me at first and sex robot already exist, but without AI, they are usually called sex doll.
There is a tons of website that sell those dolls, even on amazon, do some search in Bing, (realdoll website).
And for the guy (gelendestrasse) that said it can help the otaku, it just too much hilarious, as you see on the photo, the girl look like a white girl, not anime girl, now I will let you conclude this sentence like a big boy :)

Hey this is my new iPhone, and the over there is my new sex robot! Just pushing forward!
YuriOtani
Men can use them to pratice abduction and rape. Why do men seem to have only one thing on their minds? To me they would be useful in the HOV lanes when short a person.

JT you should try to fix the quoting thing, its just not working I often up with the above

Yeah right! 'Just test-driving the stock, dear!'
The alarming thing is that some of these people have a very low threshold for what stands as a conversation.
I also wonder if sex robot discourse could be a revolutionary harbringer of non-gendered discourse. For instance, the robot alternatively could be talking to Marista instead of Santos, who could be the one working very hard in the front office on a computer with a sex-less Microsoft WIndows 10 operating system.
Or someone could develop a standard multi-sexual version.
And there could be a selection of alluring voice patterns, and even weird anatomical features which users could screw on or screw off.
Wow! Come to think about it, a whole new sexual universe is possible, with a re-set definition of what goes as erotic pornography.

Strangerland
Maybe some sense of human contact? My point was just that the article feels like that's the way robot-makers are trying to go - making something above a mere sex toy. I don't think there's anything wrong about this though, it's a good thing for lonely people or someone who can't be bothered with real people.

Mitch Hallen has been happily married to his TV since 2002. I am quite infatuated with my Roomba. But this robot doll sex is weirdsville!!
Rik314
Dame yo! Dame. Dame.
Strangerland
Sure, but that would be sexual in nature.
For what? Daring to have a sex drive? How dare they. They should be puritans!
Strangerland
Both of which are entirely irrelevant to sex with machines.
Or should we be outlawing vibrators?
What specifically is the ethical problem with sex with machines? Who exactly is getting hurt? What moral problem is there?
Please elaborate, what do you define as a 'deviant'? It certainly sounds like a puritan word.
Strangerland
Ok, and I'll respond to your extreme statements.
Sex with an animal is an abomination, because it is the violation of a living being which cannot consent. Machines are not alive, and therefore there is no equivalent there.
I'm fine with religious freedoms, and if you don't want to have sex with a machine because your religious beliefs don't think it's right, then I respect your feelings on that. However, when you try to tell the rest of the people what they should or should not do based on your religious beliefs, that's where it becomes a problem.
As for your comment on mental illness, how ridiculous. You have just claimed that any woman who uses a vibrator is probably mentally ill.
Rape is wrong, there is no doubt about that. It is never right, because it is non-consensual.
Bondage however is done between consenting adults. You later in your post state that sex between non-consenting adults is deviant, which therefore means that when it is between consenting adults, it's not deviant. If two people choose to do this, it's not anti-social. And beyond that, it's irrelevant to this conversation, which is about sex with machines, not sex between consenting adults.
Good for you. So don't teach them that. Teach them the opposite if you want. But as far as society goes, the only way to remove that 'inferrence' would be to make sex with machines illegal, and your religious beliefs have no place in determining the legality of an action in society. That's why we have the separation of church and state.
Sure it will probably be expensive, at least at first. So what?
Non-consensual sex is rape. Sex with a machine is not equivalent, as machines are not alive, and do not need to consent.

One of my maxims is: Don't put your genitals into any kind of machinery. Still, if other people want to do that it's up to them. Just don't come crying to me when your parts have been mangled in a gearbox masquerading as an orifice.
