Halloween is perfect time to pick up Japanese women, according to survey

In Japan, there are certain annual events that are perfect for sparking new romances. With Halloween now lurking on the horizon, online retail giant Rakuten decided to see how the fall holiday fared in terms of igniting the flame between strangers, and it turns out it’s one of the best times of the year for meeting a potential partner.

The survey asked 200 women in their 20s to answer a number of questions related to love and Halloween. To kick things off, respondents were asked: “At which annual event do you think you can meet new men?” According to the results, Halloween ranked highly, coming in at second place on the list.

Summer Festivals/Firework Events (72.5 percent)

Halloween (61.5 percent)

Hanami Flower Viewing Picnics (58.5 percent)

Christmas (45.5 percent)

Valentine’s Day (19 percent)

Golden Week (17.5 percent)

Tanabata (12 percent)

My birthday (9 percent)

White Day (8 percent)

One of the reasons women feel they’re able to meet men during Halloween is because of the fun costumes, which prove to be the perfect ice breaker for strangers wanting to strike up conversations with people they’ve never met before. It’s not uncommon for men to approach women on Halloween either, with 58.5 percent of respondents saying they’ve had a male stranger call out to them while they’ve been in Halloween costume.

Delving further, the questionnaire asked women if they actually liked it when men called out to them while they were in costume on Halloween, and 63 percent of respondents said it made them happy. Not only does it make them happy, it’s something that more than half of the women surveyed said they were seeking out, as 55.5 percent revealed they were hoping to be popular with the opposite sex on the night, which is something they factored in when choosing what outfit to wear for Halloween.

The fun and carefree atmosphere of a Halloween celebration is a great way for people in Japan to let go of their normally reserved characters for a night. And while some groups of people get dressed up in costume to simply have a good time with friends, others might just be on the lookout for a life-changing encounter with the one they’re destined to be with. If that’s the case, then you might want to check out the Halloween costumes men most want to see on women, just to be sure you attract his attention.

"pick up" is an expression that should have headed straight for the trash bin ages ago. Offensive term used by slugs like sexual assaulter Julien Blanc.

Gee some people are very touchy concerning which words are used eh. Is it a deep disatisfaction within oneself that leads to looking for trivial things to vent their anger at i wonder ?

Skimpy outfits are best to "Pick up" As long as you have the figure for it i guess :)

Women are not a commodity to "pick up" as one picks up a loaf of bread or a carton of juice after work.

Surely people are aware that words are important? They show intent and opinion, they have significance, and they significantly manipulate and alter the way people see things.

Words are used in a derogatory, belittling, offensive way to make the speaker feel justified in treating others badly, or euphemistically to disguise criminal behaviour. This is not a recent phenomenon. Check out History some time.

Meet. What's wrong with "meet"? You meet people, you chat, you get along, you etc etc.

Hallowe'en is perfect time to meet Japanese women.

See? That expresses the exact same intent, without the fratboy rapey aspect. Isn't that nicer?

because people pick up others and take them home or to coffee shops etc. girls pick up guys too there is nothing offensive stop being so sensitive over syntax.

more japanese girls in costumes I am all for it

@Maria - agree with you fully. Pretty trashy headline and article. It is not journalism and it is down in the gutter with tabloids

-1 ( +10 / -11 )

Japanese girls are not so much into sex these days so even if they are 'picked up' nothing's going to happen....

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

Maria - Dress it up how you want with words but either way, in reality, it's the same thing.

Maybe so, but words affect behaviour. Call someone a bad name often enough, you start to think of them that way. The same goes for actions. The same people who talk about picking up women, will later complain about how easy those women are (ie also looking for a one-nighter) or how they became clingy afterwards (ie unhappy at being treated so badly).

And why, in the article, are women's intentions not described - not even once - as wanting to pick up a guy?

We read about women wanting to meet a potential partner, or feel they’re able to meet men, wanting to strike up conversations, to attract his attention. No good ole no-strings-attached pickups for women, eh?

Just empty-headed walking cock'n'balls, and husband-seeking misses... If people got their minds out of the 20th century, and stopped with the objectifying, demeaning, and tedious double-standards, we'd all get along much better.

P. Martin Niemoller would disagree that one should not speak out on behalf of others, and so do I.

But those who feel so light in their minds surely aren't bothered by my opinions. Predatory behaviour - just a myth, after all.

I was surprised to see Summer Festivals rated #1, but I do agree that they are a lovely sight and sound, a very light, fun atmosphere. No wonder people relax and enjoy themselves and make friends easily.

-2 ( +5 / -7 )

Of course. Skimpy outfits! If the people would wear the same kind of clothes during any other day it would be the same rating. Halloween in Japan is great, stop the negativity.

When I saw the headline I automatically thought of that bloke we banned from entering the UK who holds seminars on how to pick up women... the article itself is a bit low rent, but not as sensationalist as the headline.

Maria, I agree with you completely. Most of Japan (and the gaijin bros who come here to feel edgy and special) still retains sexist (and racist) thinking that dates back to the 1950s, or even the 1850s.

People who complain about things being "too PC?" You realize that what you are really saying is, "I want the freedom to say derogatory and offensive things without being criticized," right?

The gaijin bros who come here to feel edgy and special

A bit less of the stereotyping please. Anyway, what's wrong with wanting to feel edgy and special? In my experience, nothing infuriates 'gaijin women' more than the sight of a gaijin with a pretty Japanese girl. The claws extend and we get the "he's nothing in his own country" hiss.

I worked in a bookies as a student and the staff were 90% women. I also worked on a building site with 100% men. For sheer filth and derogatory comments about the opposite sex, the women made the men sound like those who get triggered by the wrong gender pronoun. My sister is a nurse and a nurse's night out is something definitely not for the easily offended.

Pick up? I've heard worse.

I agree, there's nothing wrong at all with women or men finding a stranger attractive, and striking up a conversation that leads to a date or more. It's fun.

"Picking up a girl" though, to those of us who actually inhabit this more egalitarian age, sounds predatory and aggressive, not to mention redolent of "Mad Men" attitudes toward women as objects rather than fellow humans.

When you puke, though, try to keep it off your tie this time, k thx.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

@Maria -agreed. Racist and sexist article for emtionally stunted man-children. It typifies some westerners tendency to commodify and marginalize non-white people.

Golly, Jimizo, I've heard worse words, too, and used by us dainty ladies, too, imagine that!!

And when you specified that we get outraged when we see gaijin men with PRETTY Japanese women??? Are you concerned that we don't care about the ugly ones, too?! /s

I think that that comment reveals a lot more about you than you realize.

Nothing is wrong with wanting to feel or be edgy and special, but it's cheating a bit, isn't it, when it's mainly the novelty of being an exotic foreigner that attracts people to you? Both women and men in Japan are prone to forgetting that their specialness doesn't really stem from having succeeded in art or industry or skills or personal charisma, but from the color of your skin.

The year of being offended by the nuances of language.

In the time it took everyone to format their little self-righteous arguments here, somewhere out there, a handful of guys with decent game have picked up some women and are on track to seal the deal.

should say 2017, not 1.

Golly, Jimizo, I've heard worse words, too, and used by us dainty ladies, too, imagine that!!

Just pointing out it isn’t all one way.

And when you specified that we get outraged when we see gaijin men with PRETTY Japanese women??? Are you concerned that we don't care about the ugly ones, too?!

Just pointing out something I’m very familiar with and I know others here are familiar with. My partner, like me, is from the UK and the things I’ve heard her US and Australian friends say about Japanese women and western men with Japanese women have been disgusting. I’ve had a few female coworkers doing the same. ‘Loser’ pops up a lot, as do variations of your acting ‘edgy and special’ hisses. The ‘he wouldn’t be popular in his own country’ is part of the creed and particularly emphasized if the women is particularly attractive.

The overall impression I get is the man in question should know his place and stop acting all ‘edgy and special’ when he isn’t.

I find it very repulsive. I like to see people enjoy themselves.

Every hour of ever day is the best time to pick up the most beautiful woman on this planet. Viva Japan!

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Ah! Romance is in the air! Happy Halloween and have fun picking up, getting picked up, or pursuing romance in whatever mode suits you. Whether it is love at first sight or cash and no names, bring some joy into your life and hopefully those around you. Avoid picking up on people who don't want to picked up... Save your charms for someone who appreciates you. Cheers!

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Jimizo, maybe you should find some nicer female gaijin friends? Yours sound like complete jerks.

And Mr. Noidall, you're quite right and I do apologise. I should have said don't puke on your mobility walker instead. So sorry.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

I agree with Maria, the language is outdated, disrespectful and exploitative. Language dos influence behaviour.
