Whatever next? Pizza with sweetcorn labelled as "Italian"?

This is ridiculous. They chose a college in Ohio. Ohio isn't exactly known for authentic foreign cuisine. Also, do you think that your home countries don't do the same thing to their foreign foods? How often is Italian or French or American food served in restaurants in Asia that are completely different from how that food would be back in it's home country.

I saw meatloaf sushi in Kansas. yuckers

I saw hamburger sushi in Japan. Double yuck.

Ah, next time I have that cream tea in Japan with tiny, bland scones, strawberry jam and some thin old, non-clotted cream I am gonna call it "disrespectful". I never thought of it till now. I just accepted its inauthenticity as a "cultural adaptation". You know, just how we are always encouraged to think about how Japan mangles imported anything.

Actually most, but not all, of Japan's bread would have to be labeled 'disrespectful'.

First world problems.

Oberlin College may be physically in Ohio....

You can't be serious? First, there are very few college campuses that have good cafeteria food. Second, there aren't even many restaurants that are truly authentic. To expect that any college (except for maybe Ivy Leagues) will have authentic foreign anything is unrealistic. Please, get over yourselves and find something worthy to discuss.

I guess the foreign students felt cheated because they wanted only "American" food on their plates. If you want authentic dishes from your home country, WHY ARE YOU LOOKING FOR THEM IN A FOREIGN COLLEGE'S CAFETERIA?! These idiots already have failed their Common Sense 101 exam.

According to an old saying "When in Rome--" Or find the door and do not let it hit you on the way out

Japanese student Tomoya Joshi called the cafeteria’s efforts at serving sushi “disrespectful.”

Uhm, he could say the very same thing about Denny's fare in Japan. I clearly remember jonesing big time for a grand slam breakfast and finding nothing butHawaii-themed items like loco moco and macadamia nut pancakes.

And I stress themed here.

And does he forget that one of Japan's best fast food dishes is their butchered version of Chinese soup? For god sakes, it is written in KANA!

Disrespectful? Are you joking? This is coming from a person who comes from the country that serves KFC and strawberry shortcake as their version of Christmas dinner.

As someone who spent some time at University in Japan. let me tell you... their cafeteria fare was far from 5 star. If I was the Dean of this school I'd flat out tell these kids to get over it. They're not required to eat at the cafeteria, and the school is not mandated to serve authentic foreign foods to these special little snowflakes. Something tells me they would complain just as much if only American food was made available. Better just show them the door and hope it doesn't smack them in the whiney box on the way out.

that college's menu is a hell of a lot better than most JHS or HS I have taught at.

Bunch of babies complaining about being homesick.

This is how I felt the first time I ate so-called "hamburger" @MOS Burger. Or when I went to Denny's and couldn't find a Grand Slam Breakfast.

People are dying for lack of calories in many parts of the world. "Spoilt rotten" comes to mind....

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Yup, pretty ridiculous to complain. Sure, it might not be authentic but no need to make a HUGE deal out of it (albeit undercooked rice is a legitimate complaint). But its funny that you hear posters complain about Japan all the time as well if Japan does things differently and berate the Japanese. Hypocrisy at its best
