On Feb 14, 株式会社アップ・ゲート Up Gate Co Ltd, a comprehensive real estate company based in Japan handling land, houses, condominiums, and real estate income plans has opened a special website for recruiting new graduates for the fiscal year 2023.
The concept for their recruitment campaign, as boldly printed at the top of the website, is 全裸採用 zenra saiyo, which literally translates to "fully nude recruitment."
Students lured by the attention-grabbing slogan and perhaps a bit concerned about the nature of the recruitment will be relieved to learn that Up Gate will not be conducting interviews at a nudist camp or asking potential recruits to actually bare any skin. Rather, the slogan is metaphorical and they would like recruits to bare their true selves.
According to their press release, "job hunting often involves hiding your everyday self, dressing up more than necessary, and acting like someone you are not (...) "The 'Fully Nude Recruitment' concept "expresses our hope that candidates will have the courage to not only give" polished self-promotional speeches and talk about extracurricular activities but also present themselves "just as they really are," their true selves without pretenses.

I wonder what will happen though if any of the applicants fail to show up in the regulation Aoyama "shukatsu" freshers suit and regulation haircut?And expect to work at a Japanese real estate company? The pictures seem to belie the promotion.

'Nude' seems to have always been used differently in Japan as unadorned, honest or open, offering scope for a bit of word play. However, given the potential for exploitation in the employer/employee relationship, it might not be quite such a good idea in the cold light of day. But it got them some free global publicity.

It is all just marketing. In a country where presentation is valued and how we are perceived is key, there is absolutely no benefit for people to "act themselves". People are not going to show up to an interview and tell the interviewers what they really think about their inane questions, any sensible person who wants to work for this company will tell them what they want to hear...

Does "fully nude" translate to "full transparency"? I feel like something got lost in translation here. Either way, I highly doubt people fresh out of uni are going to have the guts to waltz into their first and possibly last ever interview showing their true personality; not in a country that revolves around and enforces conformity. No, they'll be going to the interviews in their interview approved uniforms and neatly combed hair that's styled in the "I'm a fresh graduate! Look at me all shiny and new and ready to do whatever you ask" style.

The top can have all the dreams they want. But when it comes to actual execution, tradition and norms will always win. You can even have written rules, but the oral rules based on tradition and norms pass from senpai to kouhai will generally be the actual enforced rules on the floor, even if it is against the written rules or even laws/regulations.
Try presenting yourself as "how you really are" and there's going to be absolutely zero chance you can get even a 2nd interview.

Obviously an attention seeking strategy but I don't see it working too well for now, until this becomes at least a little bit common people will still try their best to present themselves as the culture expects them to do.
