Japanese women tell how they like to be hugged in survey of girls' manga readers

With winter here, plenty of people are trying to fight off the cold with sweaters, coats, and pot after pot of hot tea or coffee. But there’s nothing quite as good at getting rid of the chill as a lover’s warm embrace, and so the timing was just right for Japanese website Mecha Comic to ask its users how they feel about hugs.

Mecha Comic digitally publishes an extensive collection of shojo (girls’) manga, and it recently polled 1,054 of its users on the subject, starting with the simple question of whether or not they enjoyed being hugged in the first place. Given the prevalence of romance in shojo manga, it’s not surprising that the majority, 82 percent, said they liked a good squeeze. Only one percent had a blanket dislike of hugs, with the remaining 17 percent saying they didn’t have a strong feeling about them either way.

But there are all sorts of different ways to hold someone in your arms, so Mecha Comic’s next question was about how respondents liked to be hugged. The most popular was “a gentle hug from behind,” selected by nearly 700 participants. Rounding out the top three were “a tight hug from the front” and “a hug with our whole bodies pressed together.”

▼ Responses to “What kind of hug do you like?”

From top to bottom: tightly from the front, gently from behind, from the side with our shoulders touching, with our whole bodies pressed together, while gazing into each other’s eyes, while rubbing our cheeks together, with one part of our faces (forehead, nose) pressed against each other, and other (numbers indicate total votes)

Also part of the survey was a query about when respondents liked to be hugged. Mecha Comic didn’t provide any numerical data for this section, but says some of the most popular answers were “when I’m depressed and tired,” “when we say good-bye at the end of our date,” “when we make up after a fight,” and “when I’m not expecting it.”

Oh, and as the numbers for the “How do you like to be hugged?” graph indicate multiple answers, and thus conflicting answers were allowed, if you’ve got someone special to hug today, consider giving them more than one.

I found a large percentage of people have no idea what a hug is and thus instead give you an awkward lean instead.

The girls polled have probably never hugged anyone in their lives.

Affection begins from parenthood, If you werent huged when young most likely you wont feel a lean towards the whole gesture.

any of this will get you fired for sexual harassment today. be careful.

If a guy hugs his girlfriend he's going to be fired for sexual harassment? That makes no sense to me.

Sure would be nice if they could fix this 'invalid CSRF' issue that happens with every post I try to make. Not so bad when I'm on a PC, but a huge pain in the ass when I'm on my phone.

Girls SAY they like to be hugged from behind, but every time I do it, they scream and call the police.

Yeah, there's a difference between liking being hugged from behind, and liking being hugged from behind by you.

Literally every post I make results in 'invalid CSRF'. Come on JT, fix this.

Yeah, there's a difference between liking being hugged from behind, and liking being hugged from behind by you.

You know its sarcasm, right?

My mom taught me how to hug since I was a child, and she learned from a good person how to hug people. There are many types of hugs. One to show affection to a family member or close friend, one to comfort someone, and of course the romantic hug one can share with their SO that can be just for affection or for passion.

Knowing when and how to hug someone is what makes all the difference in the world.

Every morning before we leave, every evening when we both get home.

Hugging is not part of Japanese culture. The most popular response, "gently, from behind", shows that these girls don't have a clue.

Japanese hug the hell out of the little one's, it's when they get to school age that the line gets drawn and hugging and public displays of affection stop.
