Japan’s bizarre heating and cooling system for dogs

It’s the dog days of summer and your poor little pooch is sprawled out on the hardwood floor, trying to suck up as much coolness as possible. She’s looking up at you with those pleading, puppy dog eyes, hoping for some sort of relief from the heat because you’re too cheap to turn on the air conditioner.

Sure, humans have handheld fans, fancy cooling sprays, and delicious ice cream, but what does Fido get? If you’re in Japan and have enough extra cash, your dog could be chilling out this summer in its own personal air conditioner box.

Officially marketed as a “heating and cooling dog house,” this dog torture chamber box was invented by the folks at MRT, a company based in Japan that produces sensors and measuring instruments. It measures 430x430x470mm and comes in three colors: wood, pastel pink, or pastel blue. The internal temperature of the dog house can be raised and lowered between 10 degrees Celsius (50 Fahrenheit) and 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit). Wait a tick…40 degrees Celsius?! With the front door latched shut, your poor pet is liable to start cooking.

Of course MRT doesn’t discriminate; the company suggests stuffing your cat, rabbit, or ferret in their boxes as well. If you love your animal 49,800 yen worth (that’s the price of this crazy machine), then order yours on their official website. Energy consumption is estimated to cost only 750 to 1,000 yen a month…so that’s good.

Whatever you do, just be sure to keep this contraption away from your microwave. We’re not responsible for what might happen if you confuse the two.

Now this is the kind of bizarre news from Japan that I love to read about! Amazing that these kinds of things exist, even more amazing is that people took the time and resources to develop these crazy devices!

Hiyashiwanko sounds like a dish.

At least they'll let you try out a "demo" model for a week and then decide if you want to purchase it or not.

Animals have survived this long without that box...

Aha, yet another handy solution for people to dense to care about the living conditions of their quadriped slave, er, companion, before they handed over hundreds of thousands of yen to the pet store. Sigh...

Ranger Miffy, AMEN. This box is just more unnecessary garbage that people believe that should own.

Why not simply getting a dog equipped with an integrated cooling system (wagging tongue) and an integrating warming system (fur) ?

even more amazing is that people took the time and resources to develop these crazy devices!

I think that has existed for years. The invention is selling it to pet otakus now. A friend has a very resembling box for... his cameras.

That'd be a hit in yakiniku shops. And an eco solution for all the stray and abandoned dogs.

I am surprised at the negative reactions.

Sure, they have survived for millenia without it, ... but so have we. We also have global warming now, and also pets kept in very different environments than what they evolved for. I have seen breeds of dog for snow country bear hunting in dntn Osaka which is near tropical. As long as the animals can get in and out as they please and self- regulate, I see no problem, only gain. My cats are totally drained and non-responsive when the summer heat hits its stride. This could be just the thing.

"for his cameras" sure, for wine also, they have the "wine cellar" things that keep wine cool, or warm, depending on outside temp. There are all sorts of temperature control devices for various important things that are sensitive. Especially desirable in this age of weird weather...

Some people do it. Does that make it a smart thing ? Crazy for crazy, I'm surprised there are not already people keeping bears in their backyard and penguins in aquariums. Some already have scorpions, tropical lizards and giant sea turtles in heated cages or boxes, because Osaka is not tropical at all.

My cats are totally drained

They imitate you.

Awesome invention. By the way dogs can die from heat stroke. There built in "Cooling System" isn't perfect.

I made a rock pool in the back garden with a waterfall for my dawg. It's pretty hot here in Australia during the summer and he loves to lounge around in the cool water with just his eyes and nose showing. He looks like a crocodog.
