Male nipples become tools of 'sexual harassment' during summer, complain Japanese women

In Japan, male nipples seem to be getting on women's nerves. Turns out that Japanese ladies can’t stand the sight of male chesty-buds, and in this hot weather, lots of businessmen are going out and about without undershirts on. The result? A barrage of constant eye-trauma for the ladies who say that the men who are flaunting their areolas at them are committing sexual harassment! Oh my!

If you’ve ever worked in local government in Japan as I have, or in any company that strictly adheres to Japan’s “Cool Biz” initiative, you’ll feel the pain of enduring summer sweatiness during the entire workday. “Cool Biz” is a government initiative that advises keeping thermostats at a balmy 28 degrees centigrade. This saves on energy big-time, but the side-effect is that workers have to spend the whole day (after a sweaty commute) baking at their desks. To make things slightly less hellish, Cool Biz also dictates that workers can dispense with long shirt sleeves and ties in order to stay fractionally cooler.

One unexpected side effect of Cool Biz, however, is apparently sexual assault in the form of nipple exposure! While almost every Japanese man wears a white undershirt underneath his shirt for modesty reasons, Cool Biz has been driving people to fling away the undershirts and just walk around in a one-layer "wai-shatsu," or white shirt. Unfortunately, most summer shirts aren’t thick enough to disguise the male nips underneath, meaning they’ve been shining through in all their glory.

Japan’s OLs (“office ladies”) and other female members of the workforce have been taking to the Internet to express their ire at all this uncensored man flesh. We reported once before how male nubbins make Japanese ladies squirm with disgust, and it seems they don’t even make concessions for the poor fellas during this sauna-like weather.

Television station NTV recently ran a section on discussion panel show “ZIP!” polling 100 men on undershirts. Ten percent of participants responded that they dispense with undershirts during hot weather, and since small-scale polls are TOTALLY indicative of widespread trends, we can extrapolate that to mean that 10 percent of the Japanese male population is currently walking around with visible nips – imagine that.

According to the guys, their reasons for such blatant nipple-flashing boiled down to “It’s hot and I don’t care”, which you can probably understand if you’ve endured Japanese Cool Biz before and have any compassion for your fellow humans. Unfortunately, the ladies who commented were pretty ruthless in their condemnation of this lackadaisical attitude to flesh-flashing.

Apparently, women found it difficult to look such men in the eye, and in some cases even reported a feeling of being sexually harassed. Others reported that with all the nipples everywhere, they found it difficult to concentrate on their work, with many falling behind and failing to hit quotas as a result.

Personally, we feel like maybe, just maybe, some ladies are being a little TOO squeamish about all this.

By the love of... NIPPLES ARE JUST NIPPLES!!!

They're not a sexual assault gun or whatever you wana see it as!

Stop treating the human body with such fear and disgust -.-

Seriously?? With how slutty most women dress in this country...... Women constantly have their tits half hanging out regardless of what job they are doing and you want to complain about nipples seen through shirts? Wait hang on don't we always see female nipples through shirts?!?

Are you in Japan, or referring to a different country? Your comments don't really jive with my experience in Japan - I've never seen a girls nipples through her shirt here that I can recall. They pretty much all wear padded bras.

How about you try to google 'if you have something you want me to look at, post a link'

0 ( +0 / -0 )

@Strangerland ... try to google 'man and breast'

0 ( +0 / -0 )

As I can't ask why men attract to see women breast, it's part of nature.

No, the attraction to breasts is societal in nature. Look at cultures where women don't cover their breasts - breasts are not looked at as objects of sexual attraction in these cultures.

As I start to notice about Japan where man are not understanding about women and make assumption by their point of view without trying to make observation and try to understanding the differences. Maybe u all really need to read why man from mars and women from venus.

there are a huge different for man to see women breast and for women to see the men nipples. I can said it's disgusting view to see men nipples. don't ask why because it's just nature. As I can't ask why men attract to see women breast, it's part of nature.

I worked with a woman years ago who did this - no bra (didnt need one) white shirt and VERY visible "chesty buds". The office all used to call her "Walnut Whip-ples". It was actually pretty gross (she was not a looker) but it definitely caught the attention of someone - a few years after I left I heard there was a huge scancal involving one of the senior married members of management.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

...I can see it now...

"Boss, Hanako was sexually harassing me with her huge cleavage again....What? I was certainly not ogling!"

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Sexual harassment: anything a woman doesn't like that involves nudity (including partial) courting, sex, touching or being looked at by anyone attracted to her (irregardless of her choice of location, dress, or manner), including and especially if it turns her on but she does not want to be turned on for whatever reason at that time.

Basically, its sexual harassment if a woman says it is. They own us males now in case you didn't know.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

been waiting for this- the return of the Male Bra. yes that was a real invention- it was made to reduce the maleness in offices. make all men get in touch with their female sides.

maybe all men should just take a colored sheet, cut two eye holes and start wearing that, should not cause too much concern then

Ha ha ha! Didn't realize this was the Sunday comics section.

FreeAllNipples! Even those who have extras.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

No wonder Japan is becoming a country of herbivore men. When they show, even if unintentionally, any sign of male muscles - arms, pectorals, legs - it's harassment. Why don't women complain about J-men wearing feminine hairdos, lipsticks and high-heels?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

reported a feeling of being sexually harassed

If that's sexual harassment, then I'm harassed every day, especially when I'm at the beach.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I feel that most people hear think this is about walking around shirtless... Read the article. It's about seeing nipples through a shirt. Good grief get over yourselves. I highly doubt anyone will complain slid Japanese woman start ditching their bras and wear thinner shirts especially if it's a white shirt and a rainy day

0 ( +0 / -0 )

It would have been a harrassment if they were hugging them like that.. or something.. but come on?! The man were just trying endure the heat.

To @JapanGal

Men's nipples are not sexual objects.

Can't agree with your point of view.. also- this is a subjective matter.. however- they are not sexual organs.. and were not used in any sexual way to harrass a person.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

They really don't have a life do they. Men's nipples are not sexual objects. They just come wih the body. Just do your jobs ladies, and stop harrassing your coworkers.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

"Ladies, uh, hello? My eyes are up here." (54 year old salaryman)

3 ( +3 / -0 )

These women make me sick. They are just simply men haters who are hell bent on complaining about everything...

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Let me get this straight......it is OK to have public nudity at a bath house, but the sight of a man's nipples showing underneath his shirt is offensive? Sorry, I can't understand how that works out.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

I think we ought to be careful what we call "sexual harassment". If we start calling things we don't like to see sexual harassment, then I will use that the next time I see somebodies hairy armpits.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

28 is perfectly comfortable if there is air movement and humidity around 60% or lower. My house is kept at exactly this and it's great.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Then you wear a bra under your dress shirt and they're all like "Kimoi!" There really is no pleasing these women.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Well, as long as you wear white and with a tie, that should be fine. These women are just too much, they need to be fired if they cannot complete their quotas just because of a ridiculous excuse.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Just like in any country, government employees are spoiled brats and spend half the time complaining and other half the time barking at the public they are suppose to serve. Bet you that people working in a private sector do not have time or taste for this kind of ridiculous observations. Well cultured person should not even notice this kind of things.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

At any rate, this is a stupid story. Who cares what the men wear? And are the women any better in their choices for Summer time fashion?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

As they didn't give any numbers, it was probably one woman made a sarcastic comment, and another agreed with her, which they then turned into an article.

Can you imagine if they wrote articles in Japanese about what foreigners think based on the comments section on this site?

7 ( +7 / -0 )

This is the feminist movement here in Japan? What about the ladies dress code? They walk around with buttocks exposed. See through tops. And yes, I've seen "genitalia" exposed here in Japan.

Say something about that.

Men are being dissed in this country. They can't smoke anymore. They lose their pension if they divorce. They are being hung out to dry. Now these women are complaining if the men try to stay cool.

Please kick the men off the island and take over this rock on your own.

pennyforathought JUL. 25, 2015 - 08:04AM JST So yeah, maybe women are just pointing out the ridiculous double standards?

This would be a very reasoned proposal if even one person interviewed in the article had brought it up. But they didn't, so assuming it to be true would be putting words in the mouths of the women in the article.

All we have left is what the people in the article said, that they thought that seeing male nipples was sexual harassment. Now, we don't know how many people were interviewed and how many made that claim, but for whoever did, it shows a very trivialized notion of what sexual harassment is. Which is a shame, because Japanese women need strong support for the many real cases of sexual harassment that happen here, and we wouldn't want that support to be undermined by a lazy tabloid passing off the poorly-thought-out opinions of a tiny number of selfish OLs are representative of the women of Japan.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Do woman actually stare at men long enough to notice their nipples. Usually a summer umbrella will not allow that.

@kitzroow. LoL, good point there.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

All I see is a nice bit of invented news. Yeah, I am sure there have been some complaints like this on the internet. But is it common? Is there an explosion of this? No. Stupid people saying stupid things can be found anywhere. That isn't news.

But I will say this: What you are not used to becomes offensive. And what you are used to becomes natural. I grew with men always taking off their shirts to play sports or work outside. I grew up with Captain Kirk taking off his shirt on every other episode of Star Trek. Never thought a thing about it. Then I came to Japan and I took my shirt off to work outside in a narrow space between my place, a fence and my neighbor's back door that he never used, and could only be seen by a gap by the road that no one ever walked by. My in-laws came by and declared I was naked!

And now, years later, living in this country where they tend to wear two layers even in the hottest summer, seeing a shirtless man is now indeed a bit shocking and takes some getting used to when I go to the pool.

But its all so stupid. I went to my son's daycare and asked them about this double layer stuff. Because its way too hot lately I advised them to advise parents to give up the double layers for summer. Thankfully, they heard me and did so. Even my wife stopped doing that to our son though it really took the daycare teachers agreeing and not my voice.

Nipples are hot & these mumzas are not I've met many women in my life but never such Frigidity, real man-haters!

0 ( +2 / -2 )

An open letter from my nipples,

For too long I've been forced to take residence behind your layers upon layers of clothing. For too long I've been shamed from standing up and trying to break through my cotton blend of oppression. I have done nothing but in sexual pleasure for thee. If you twist us, do we not squeal? If you bite us, do we not bleed? If it is hot, do we not perspire?

Let us breathe! Free from shame and ridicule! Let us breathe!

Said women should fling off their bras and wear those same white shirts and show their male counterparts what real seku-hara sexual harassment is all about!

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Modesty reasons for wearing an undershirt. That is definitely the first time I have heard that reason and I have asked often. The main reason I usually get is that the undershirt helps to save the dress shirt from getting sweaty. I opened this article as I knew it was a nonsense or absurd story and I feel I was not wrong. I am still chuckling. Do woman actually stare at men long enough to notice their nipples. Usually a summer umbrella will not allow that. I will be sending this to friends in the States so they can chuckle as much as I have!

6 ( +6 / -0 )

Yeah, calling it harassment just devalues the word and when everything becomes harassment nothing is harassment. But it follows a trend of concepts and words becoming devalued when they cross the border, most particularly any concepts related to human rights.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

I'm all for japanese women voicing the concerns in the workplace and being outspoken in general. But, that is ridiculous. Grow up already!!

6 ( +6 / -0 )

the word harassement is too much! Anything can be called harassement in Japan obviously!!

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Apotheosis of absurd.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

men are men and we don't wear bras. are you thrilled seeing men's nipple?

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

So, let the women do the same. Plain and simple. Or else stop complaining.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

I have a problem believing all this. Is this really on the level?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Who cares if a guy doesn't wear an undershirt under his dress shirt? I never did, when I had to wear a suit, and I've always said that any real male that did was a perspiring nobody who couldn't keep his sweat controlled. Get a life; there are more important things than nipples. I can still see them through the bras of most women where I still consult, and heaven forbid, in pubs where I enjoy lunch. Sheesh!

0 ( +3 / -3 )

It would not bother me at all if the women wanted to do the same thing, wear white blouses and shed the bra. Equal rights, I always say.

14 ( +15 / -1 )

I like how my country handles it.

Topless allowed/forbidden counts for both men and women, so as a guy you can't walk or do sports topless in public as is common here.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

First, I intend to steal the phrase chesty-buds and use it gratuitously. I apologize for this in advance. Second, I don't know what kind of biddies would be crying "sexual harassment" as this seriously undermines the severity of a serious charge. You might say it's unaesthetic or unappealing or caused you to tingle in strange and unfamiliar ways that caused a vague discomfort, but sexual harassment--no.

18 ( +18 / -1 )

Absurd article. Women have to wear a cami or stay layered all summer. They aren't allowed to show their shoulders nor have anything below the collar bone visible. You're also not supposed to have any bra seen or the outline of it visible through tops - at all. This is very hard and can only really be done through layering. And of course if you don't do this, and during summer too, you're not presenting yourself professionally. So yeah, maybe women are just pointing out the ridiculous double standards? You want free nipple? Then free all the nipples.

16 ( +20 / -4 )

Ridiculously hot, still serving boiling tea, but no! No aircon yet, because the calendar doesn't say so! And vice versa for winter.

8 ( +10 / -2 )

I think it's funny that out of X number of feet tall a man is and this is the focus or their attention.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

I suspect these are the same women who always complain about the AC being too cold.
