Wow ! what sort of buildings do they build over there ? cracks in walls, ceilings and floors, through electrical outlets. Even Japanese apartments would not be that bad.

Never lived in NY, but I can tell you from first hand experience, You can still get plenty of second-hand smoke wafting into your apartment, even in brand new Apt / Mansions. I had a neighbor, Japanese oyaji, the guy must have smoked 3 packs a day, of course, he didn't attempt to contain the smoke in his apartment, so he would blow it directly into the ventilation system (so his family wouldn't have to smell it) but if I had my exhaust fan on, or depending on the wind direction, or if my window was even 1-cm open, I would get his second hand smoke pouring into my apartment. If there was one day in a month, that wouldn't smell that smoke, it would have been lucky. Building Management told me to FO, even after I had a lawyer send a letter, so I had to move. I think it would have been easier to rid Japan of organized crime, than it would have been to get some kind of remedy from building management. Smoking is as much a way of life ingrained in Japanese society as the tatami mat, and they won't budge once 1 CM. Good for NY!

Get worked up about second hand cigarette smoke from the apartment below!

When you are out on your balcony; gardening, hanging out laundry, or just trying to get some fresh air, cigarette smoke wafting up from a smoker, or from a ventilator fan below RUINS it, every time !

Although car exhaust and factory smoke stacks are an issue of some import, the evidence of them is not right up in your face, destroying the tranquility of your home.

To know if the building you choose to live in will be smoke, bed-bug, and lead-paint free, is a good thing.

Trust me, smoke can very easily flow into your apartment from next door when your windows are both open during the springtime. I used to have to shut my damn window to stop it, so in protest, I would BBQ big time on my balcony without care, because if they complained I would throw it back in their face to stop smoking then. I am so glad NY is stepping up to bat and letting people know which ones are smoke free. It is not only smoke, but is also a potential fire hazard.

Best thing would be to ban smoking, say the goverment gives a 3 year time to make it illegal. Up til then suibsidised help is given to help those seriously addicted. Smoking has no benefits to society.

@ NinjaDave: "no benefits to society." If that is your criteria, what else should be banned? Drinking, any food product that doesn't give nutritional benefits(bye bye pocky), automobiles are for only the select few who can afford them, not society in general so they have got to go. According to vegans and vegitarians meat is not necessary for society to survive, so by that and your standard meat is not necessary. I know this is going to extremes, but to blindly fall into the trap that America tried about 100 years ago with alcohol without remembering what a fiasco for about 20 years that had become is to be just as rediculous as back then. Why do you think they repealed an amendment to the US constitution? Because it doesn't work. Niether will a ban on tobacco.

Loose cannon; Cigarettes have no benefit to anyone except sellers. Porka nd sweets can be used as part of a balanced diet. alcohol in moderation does no harm, tobacco smoking is only harmfull and does nothing poitive to ones health.

“Smoking kills and people have the right to know if they are going to be exposed to secondhand smoke,” Bloomberg said.

There is no way that second hand smoke wafting across a balcony will be hazardous to anyone. So the whole thing is BS and Bloomberg wants to force his moral standards on others.

“Air quality monitoring studies have detected elevated levels of harmful particulates in nonsmokers’ apartments when occupants are smoking in another unit.”

I'd like to see that study. What was the sample size? Elevated from what? And the biggest lie is that the particulates are only harmful in amounts much higher than they measured. So it's a big fuss based on safety when in reality it's a moral crusade.

Leave to NY what belongs to NYers, and NYers can be quite progressive lot.

Ummm, I'd think that smokers would disagree with that. And they would probably resent you making that judgement on their behalf.

“Even though the percentage of at-home smokers is small, in some buildings cigarette smoke can move quickly between apartments via cracks in the wall, ceilings and floors, through electrical outlets, and under doors,” the office said. It's becoming a witch hunt. And when it becomes illegal to smoke tobbaco rest assured these moral zealots will turn their attention once again, to banning alcohol.

And making church attendance compulsory on a Sunday.

ALL my life & have had to contend with busses ,trucks & auto fumes cigarette smoke is the least of N,Y.'s problems & We sure don't need Anyone legislating the way we live-He thinks because of his $$$ & power he can Dictate to people how they should live & that is WRONG!
