Part-maid cafe, part-dentist’s office? Akiba Dental Clinic to open in Tokyo

Akihabara is Tokyo’s most otaku-oriented district, filled with electronics stores, video game retailers, and anime specialty shops. Otaku themselves, though, usually don’t call the place “Akihabara,” opting instead for the abbreviated “Akiba.”

That’s something that a new dental clinic opening up in the neighborhood seems well aware of. It’s officially named Akiba Dental Clinic, and that’s not the only way in which it’s appealing to otaku tastes.

In listing what sets them apart from other dentists, Akiba Dental Clinic (or Akiba Shika, to use their full-Japanese name) mentions things like their convenient location and hours. They’re just a two-minute walk from the station, and they’re open until 11 p.m., even on weekends. But the list also includes:

● Greeting patients in Akiba-style cute uniforms

● You can practice brushing your teeth with your favorite staff member!

Akiba Dental Clinic does also make a point to assure prospective patients that it is, indeed, a genuine dentist’s office, not some sort of dental-themed cafe or cosplay club. Joji Yukawa, owner of Akiba Dental Clinic, is a graduate of Nagano Prefecture’s Matsumoto Dental University, and the clinic offers treatment for cavities and periodontal disease, as well as dental implant, cleaning, and whitening services.

The clinic begins operations in earnest at the start of July, but they held an open house, with a limited number of polaroid photo opportunities with the staff last week.

While one could cynically call the frilly outfits and fashionable make-up marketing ploys, they also seem to be part of the clinic’s efforts towards making the place somewhere patients will look forward to visiting, no mean feat for a dentist’s office. Akiba Dental Clinic also mentions several times on its website and Twitter account that it understands that some people are afraid of going to the dentist, and may have been avoiding checkups or treatments for a long time, but that anyone is welcome to come in for a free consultation.

You can practice brushing your teeth with your favorite staff member!

That is just so wrong. Super creepy

Well this is super uncomfortable and legally questionable IMO. Are they trained professionals? Will they be performing real dentistry procedures? Overall, just why?

What a great idea! Men get to pretend that even very accomplished women with advanced degrees in a medical feild are really nothing more than cutesy sex symbols that they can feel superior to!

Yes, encouraging even more sexism and misogyny is just what we need in 2022. Why should men have to grow up and treat women like equals, when they can just go to Akihabara and be surrounded by cutesy women who will pretend to be helpless and brainless to stroke their egos and make them feel better about themselves?

I mean, who needs therapy to help you grow out of your social awkwardness and inability to relate to women as people, when all you have to do is find ways to make sure the women cater to your inability to be a fully mature adult amiright?!?!

If there is already ear cleaner maid cafe, why not dental maid care?

There should be pedicure maid cafe as well but all these works Only in Japan.

Not exactly what I would want to visit when I have dental problems, maybe some regular check up, but cavities or anything serious? no thanks.

I'm up for trying it out.

But the dental assistants at my go-to dentist are already wearing more revealing uniforms than at this Akiba place.

Gotta love this country though. They know what sells and they are not held back by a screaming woke minority.

Drill away!

Nobody's forcing the women to work there. If they were, you might have a case. Ever consider that the people who work there are interested in the same subculture?

Anyway, rub them up the wrong way and it could be very painful indeed for the patient.

Idiotic.

Yes, I have considered that. Normally I'm all about "YKINMKBYKIOK" but in this case, I'm okay with fetish shaming.

There's "let's pretend and then go back to normal life" kink games, and then there's "ima gonna create my own unhealthy world and live in it all the time".

This kink is not one I am not open-minded about, and believe me, there ain't many kinks I say that about.

why does society need this? if you're afraid of the dentist then just ask for laughing gas... it'll calm all nerves!

I don't know about that. I have seen drive through coffee kiosks advertising "Bikini Coffee" (servers wearing bikinis, don't know how that works in the winter) and know of at least one topless coffee shop in Orange County. There was a big bust in Anaheim many years ago where some chiropractors were giving patients more than a back rub. They were adjusting something else!

Did you say "a big bust" deliberately DT? Or was that a Freudian slip?

I think Chiropractors call their services an "adjustment."
