Pokemon Go matchmaking events announced in Japan

One of the best things about Pokemon Go is that it gets you out and about, but even then it may be hard to meet people. Well, not any more! Now you can actively meet people while still catching ‘em all.

ENA Ltd has announced it will be holding Pokémon Go matchmaking events around Tokyo and Kanagawa, cleverly calling the meetups “Pokemon Gokon” – “Gokon” being the Japanese word for “matchmaking event”.

The first Pokemon Gokon took place at Hibiya Park on Wednesday night. It cost 2,000 yen for men and 1,000 yen for women who booked online.

Participants were digitally marked in the game so thgey could easily find others who are part of the event. Organizers are encouraging single people to join as “it will be easy to start a conversation with others because you’re playing the same game”.

And best of all, everyone gathered for drinks after the hunt for Pokemon comes to an end. According to the organizers the after-drinks meetup allows for more sparks to fly: “You can enjoy drinking with everyone you met in the game and also have some exciting new encounters. This will be your chance to chat to people who you couldn’t talk with during the game.”

There will also be one held around Odawara Castle in Kanagawa Prefecture on Saturday Aug 27. Organizers are also planning future events for Yoyogi Park, Ueno Park and Inokashira Park, which are all in Tokyo.

So if you’re feeling a little lonely this summer and you’ve caught the Pokémon Go bug, perhaps Pokemon Gokon is the event for you.

Great, a bunch of nerdy singles standing around looking at their phones.

Get the same experience for cheap by just sitting in the metro.

Sexist pricing. I applaud this kind of event that matches up sad obsessives. Next, we will see reports on Pokemon themed weddings.

they'll need an extra social skills app. They'll need all the human emotions app as well. Maybe they'll turn back into humans? Hard to say in the land of Borg drones

If that works and they reproduce, be afraid of the names of the babies...

What is with the price difference?

There is the same differences with salaries and men don't seem bothered.

Perhaps Pokemon Go in Japan has the unintended side-effect of helping hikikomoris get out of the house and possibly help them make that first step in developing social skills, even if it's with fellow recluses. Not so bad after all.

Not unintended at all. It's been made clear since the beginning that this was actually kind of the point of the game.

As for this Pokemon Gokon, brilliant matchmaking idea. Hopefully this would lead to more unions and somehow help with Japan's declining birth rate.

dcog9065 AUG. 17, 2016 - 10:22AM JST What is with the price difference? Men should boycott and women should complain.

i usually ask the same question. assuming this includes food/beverage (which i doubt for this price) men usually eat/drink more than women. other than that, it is offensive to both genders.

Have you.. ever left your house? This is not only standard practice, but equal prices are vanishingly rare>

yeah i never go out, actually. thanks for the info. i just don't get it basically.

GREAT! I see Pokemon weddings, and wedding dresses with pokemons on them, and for a few extra yen, hello kittys too. And then Pokemon honeymoon travel packages whereby the two love birds can hunt pokemon and maybe maybe or maybe not do the sex thing. I worry about the younger generation--even my Americanized though thoroughly Japanized bilingual son!! But at least he doesn't do this Pokemon nonsense!

And then when they are all drunk the guys will whip out their pocket monsters and compare them.

Imagine the great time to be had with both parties staring intently at their smartphones.

Before Pokemon Go: "Nerds never get out of their parents basements. They should be condemned".

After Pokemon Go: "Nerds are daring to leave their parents basements. They should be condemned".

Finally, someone who understands!!

Bars all over the world have ladies nights that allow women in for free or reduced costs. The reason? More women attract more men. This results in more people overall, for better sales for the promoter. It also ensures that the event doesn't end up a sausage party.

Common practice... have you ever been to Aisekiya, or any clubs in general?
