Rich and bald or handsome and poor? Survey asks Japanese women who’d they’d rather marry

Japanese internet portal Fusamen, which bills itself as a resource for information on hair restoration treatments and techniques, conducted a survey about how Japanese women feel about guys with thinning hair, or no hair at all, it piqued his interest, and their response to the first question knocked his pride down a peg.

Fusamen surveyed 500 single women (18 younger than 20, 198 in their 20s, 202 in their 30s, and 82 in their 40s), and the questionnaire started off with “Do you like men who have thinning hair/are bald?” The vast majority, 90 percent, said they did not.

However, things started looking a little better with question 2, which asked “Could you fall in love with a man who has thinning hair or is bald?” 54 percent of the women said they could, implying that even if scarce hair isn’t their preferred look for a guy, it isn’t an instant deal breaker. The picture for got even rosier when Fusamen inquired “Could you marry a man who has thinning hair/is bald?”, as 61 percent said yes, they could tie the knot with a guy as head as smooth as the wedding bells that would ring for them.

You might have noticed something a little strange about those numbers, though: only 54 percent of the women said they could fall in love with a thin-haired guy, but more of them, 61 percent, said they could marry one. Maybe that discrepancy comes from respondents interpreting the question “Could you marry a man who has thinning hair/is bald?” as meaning that they’re already in love with this hypothetical man, and answering whether or not his lack of hair would be a deal-breaker, in and of itself, that would prevent them from marrying him.

Or maybe the gap is because for the survey participants, love isn’t the only part of the equation when calculating if they want to get married. For its fourth question, Fusamen asked “Would you rather marry a rich, bald man, or a handsome (ostensibly thick-haired), poor man?”, and the women had a pretty clear preference.

● Bald and rich: 76 percent

● Handsome and poor: 24 percent

Those number align almost perfectly with a separate survey from a Japanese women’s magazine a while back, in which 75.5 percent of the respondents said they’d rather date a rich, ugly man than a handsome, unemployed dude.

Of course, neither choice in the bald/rich and handsome/poor scenario mentions anything about personality. To get a closer look at the women’s marriage criteria, the survey also asked “What kind of thin-haired/bald man would you be willing to marry?”, with the responses being:

● Rich: 35 percent

● Kind: 29 percent

● Cheerful/funny: 9 percent

● Cool: 9 percent

● Dependable/helpful: 6 percent

● Fun 4 percent

● Other: 8 percent

The results don’t specify what proportion, if any, of the “Other” responses translate to “Wears a toupee.”

So in other words, while most of the Japanese women who were surveyed may not prefer a guy to be thin-haired or bald, those aren’t insurmountable traits, because what really counts is what’s on the inside (of either your heart, your wallet, or some combination of the two).

Rich and bald or handsome and poor?

Hmmm, this could have as easily been written "Rich and UGLY..." 'Bald' as the opposite of 'handsome'. And only two comments and not directed at this judgement on baldness? Crickets. I'm a REALLY old guy and have hair from wrinkled forehead to L4 vertebra so my take on 'the tragedy' of baldness is 2nd person, maybe even 3rd person when facial hair is counted but this seems a bit of a slap to the less hirsute among us. Yes, bald has tried to become the 'Power Look' but headlines like this demonstrate the unconscious judgements of both this writer and the editor's expected readership. People criticize trump's hair but imagine him bald and shiny! OMG! Ethology has pointed out that female considerations of security vis-a-vis childbearing are rooted in Human survival and that selecting a mate for reasons of 'security' over emotional and physical satisfaction is actually a positive selection behavior and just another sacrifice which women may make for the sake of their children. Given the opportunity, men often are no less inclined to choose 'security' over emotional satisfaction but for different, less laudable reasons and look for their physical satisfaction elsewhere. If the social relations between men and women were equal, I suspect that the average Human male would not score too differently from these average Human females in such a poll except that #2 reason for men would probably involve, instead of "kindness", mammary glands in some way. Humans, what we think and say we are, and what we REALLY are, live in two almost unrelated Universes.

One can be handsome and bald. I'm living proof.

As if the numbers wouldn't be identical for men if asked "hot, rich and self-absorbed or ugly, poor, and kind." We're all superficial.

William,

Apologies for pointing this out to you, but you do realize that according to this article any young and marriageable women reading your comment will have stopped reading after your rather self-deprecating description of yourself?

Anyway, the article is just one point of view. To me, a quick glance around in any crowded place could just as legitimately draw a different conclusion re the popularity of bald/shaven men with attractive women.

I'm not bald, by the way. Just for reasons of self-disclosure.

"Maybe old, bald, poor men????????????"

You describe me to a t!

I think it’s hard to take the results of a survey with only two options at opposite extremes of each other to be all that accurate an indicator as to the actual decision making process gone through when a person chooses a partner.

How about bald and White? I’m good-looking for my age, solid income, and I have a full head of hair but I’m Filipino and I never get the time of day from Japanese women who always gravitate to my friends who look like Amazon’s Jeff Bezos! I noticed that almost uniform look that’s attractive to income-blind Japanese women...bald, kinda googly-eyed, White, and usually acts like a modern-day Lafcadio Hearn, i.e. more Asian than Asians are! LOL! So being bald isn’t necessarily a deal-breaker day if one is a gaijin!

This is common sense.

When it comes to marriage, money and status trumps all. She doesn't love you, she loves your money and how you can elevate her status.

I agree. I used the results of a number of different surveys when selecting my partner for life. It's worked out well so far.

You can't blame women for preferring rich men.

Child raising is expensive, and you need money to raise a child properly.

Poor husbands make the child raising task exceedingly difficult.

If Japan was a country where childcare and education were free and housing is cheap, then yes do blame women.

This is why the population is declining in Japan

This info was on a hair restoration website, so they're not going to promote baldness, are they?

I used to listen to Canadian rockers Rush when I was a kid and they had a song called "I Think I'm Going Bald". 45 years on, they still have hair!

I’ve also noticed that Asian women in general gravitate toward the white foreigners even there are better looking Asian foreigners. However, one of the biggest players I knew was a 5’5 Vietnamese-American Marine who was always more popular with women than all the other white, Hispanic, and black Marines. He must’ve had some solid game.

No chance then for poor, bald and toothless?

bald... handsome

Are the two mutually exclusive?

One can be handsome and bald. I'm living proof.

Well, Telly, er, Yul, er, garypen, we're going to need you to post a link with your photo so our female readers can judge! Tee hee!

Maybe old, bald, poor men

but women prefer rich ugly men over handsome poor guys. seems that even with good looks you dont have much of a chance if youve got no money.

When it comes to marriage, money and status trumps all. She doesn't love you, she loves your money and how you can elevate her status.

It’s in the reckoning for many, including some men. One of the reasons I got together with my partner was because she was clearly someone capable of making good money. She overestimated me in terms of earning potential but I’m not bad. I’d give her a 7 on this score and I get the feeling she’d give me a 5.

There is nothing wrong with men or women taking this into account.

I’m here to tell all of you that if your hot, mixed blood, and rich, the ladies will like ya...

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Ahhh money and the things we’d do to have it.

I think it should be mentioned, that in the original article; bald was written as “hage” which in Japanese is a derogatory term and always carries a negative undertone and includes combovers and such.

”Skinhead” on the other hand, means a shaved head, and is generally considered to be “fashionably bald.” (ie: Jason Stathom, the Rock)

Universal truth

Most men - Fine Pretty with Humour

Most women - Rich, just rich

Pure Love is never there, just attraction.

And only 4% of the marriages will survive above the line and forever: the fun respondents.

In my experience, the hot Asian girl will marry the rich dude regardless of looks but will undeniably cheat with a poor, handsome guy. Ask my pool boy buddy, he gets laid all the time by Japanese ladies who are married to guys who are at work round the clock here in Hawaii.

Not to mention the cheating Japanese housewife in Japan any "gaijin" who has spent time in Japan will have experienced that or know of someone.

Oddly, then didn't mention "good in bed" ... no wonder Japan is aging.

keep fit

bang often

have kids if possible

eat together

better to be bald than fat

Handsome and poor....likely to remain poor, but the handsomeness will fade away

Bald and rich-will stay bald (barring hair transplants) and likely to remain rich.

My husband was bald, poor and handsome when I met him. These surveys always choose narrow search parameters to get the results they want for a story.

What if the woman marries a man with a fine head of hair, but it gradually disappears over time? How much money should the man save to avoid being dumped?

Asking for a friend.

What if the woman marries a man with a fine head of hair, but it gradually disappears over time?

That's why it makes more sense to some degree to marry a man who is economically stable, even if not pretty. In the end, none of us are pretty.

When we are young, we want a partner who is attractive. As we get more mature, we realize that we want to add some things to the list of desired attributes. Sex appeal is still on the list, but it stops being the only thing on the list.

Had one of these features 12 to 18 months ago on JT.

Same trend.

Time to get older and richer while losing some hair over it, guys! If that (and the J-chick to go with it is what you want. Got mine though still have my hair and less money that before to boot).

Self praise is no recommendation. Lol.

I'm fine with poor, bald, but um... toothless ... would be a turn off lol
