Good news for a change. Nice to hear about Japanese taking a more active role in their communities.

It's pathetically sad the public has to stand up against these gangsters while the cops do bugger all! Every couple of years the cops, sorry, the bicycle registration checkers, will raid one of the gang offices as token gesture, but there are rarely charges laid.

Sharky1, this might be good but it's not "news." This is a stock story off the shelf that pops up every couple of years in a different city. Last time it was in Shizuoka. Just replace the names and it's like you're reading boilerplate text.

Right...now for the retards that ride their motorcycles at all hours of the night back and forth with really really annoying sounds!!!!!

Slow down there! We don't want them to go underground, do we!

Let's face it - what we need here is some legislation that will force the yaks to register with the government and carry these cards where ever they go. This must be administered by the Ministry of Justice - even if the municipalities would offer to do this, there is no easy way for the MoJ to access that information. It's a no-brainer.

Where these yakuza ID cards (we can have a pink colored version for the Chimpiras - until they pass the test. On a side note, I'm starting a chain of schools to teach the young poofy haired ones how to become a full fledged Yak for just 350,000 yen a pop, but I digress) will really come in handy is on the street. The mawari-san will now have a new weapon to fight with.

When they catch a baddy in the act of punching out the random passerby, they can simply ask if they have a Yak Card.

If they say they indeed have the card, they offense must be registered! If they say they do NOT have a card, then as long as their apology to the victim looks sincere enough, then they are free to go.

Can I please quote this article when a report on "foreign crime" comes up.

You folks in japan have only Yakuza to worry about .Here in N.Y.C. we have a gang for just about every race that lives here. The Police have an impossible task. Here in the Good Old U.S.of A The Gangs get all the "Civil "rights and the liberal media make front page stories abouthow these poor souls are abused at the hands of the police!I hope someday soon the average people will mete out TRUE justiceto these animals and like the brave people of Akasaka get some peace and security

Moderator: Readers, please keep the discussion focused on Japan.

zhazam05 ,

Some of the Police forces in NY and other cities are like gangs.

This is so interesting-sorry! I just think that their money making businesses carry 2 points. One, like that of construction, the 'yakuza' are rather good for something. Their opposition often white-collar workers who are happy to make money off other mens sweat. The second parts also has 2 parts, mainly "sex" trafficing and opposedly, drugs. The only solution that comes to mind is make sure wives wages equals their fellow sex-providers. For starters anyway.

The police don't seriously tackle the Yak problem, because they are in bed with each other. Pathetic indeed. Hooray for the brave citizens of Akasaka.

If the Yaks are being shut down where am I going to get my porn and drugs?

You are so right, Disillusioned. Most people think, though, the reason the cops don't "bust" these gangsters is that high level police in Japan are commonly on the take from the Yakuza - and anyone else who wants a "favour". Maybe eventually people power in Japan will stand up to the corrupt J-Cops and rebuilt the rotten "Justice System" in Japan?

"Former Gangsters" caught and prosecuted so far this year: 754

Good for the Japanese public. Shame on Japanese cops.

The yakuza’s typical rackets are extortion, gambling, prostitution, gunrunning, drug-trafficking and construction kickback schemes.

Police identify 22 groups nationwide as crime syndicates and estimate membership at 80,000. Their activities are restricted but not banned, because forming a group isn’t illegal.

JT yr quote thingy aint working............

Anyway, so how about all, some of us here form a group, call it the GAIJIN-GUMI, then we shud be good to do as we damn well pls, although we may be restricted a bit here & there, but hey we cud run these isles & have the keystones in our back pockets, think of it not more random bick checks, that alone wud make it worth it, so who else is in?

Seems to me that what Japan needs is something like our RICO act so they can confiscate any assets owned by the the gangsters that were acquired through illegal and criminal activity. That pretty much forced large organized crime in the US into legitimate directions. Of course it left the field open for the newcomers.

Yeah, "Jeff". Us gaijin are so stupid. If you REALLY wanted the Yakuza out of the sex trades, you would legalize it and regulate it. If there's no profit to be made from an activity, then the Yakuza won't waste their time with it. Us "stupid" gaijin understand that but the "smart" nihonjin would rather just sit in their house and blame the Omawari for all their troubles. Perhaps it's time to change some laws (unless all you really WANT to do is complain about the J-cops and couldn't care less about what the Yakuza does)?

Personally I've never had any problem with the Yaks. Here they give money to charity etc. and try to appear as legitimate businessmen. That said when you've got a turf war or someone guns down the mayor of Nagasaki the equation changes. Good for these residents who united and kicked the gang out of their neighborhood. It certainly defies a lot of the gaijin stereotypes that Japanese never get involved etc. etc.

usaexpat........ I am pretty sure the yakuza do more than give to charities

Japanese cities and districts where owners banned foreigners to rent housing, because foreigners commit crime: all. Japanese cities and districts where owners banned Yak to rent housing, because Yaks commit crime: Akasaka district.

Hurray!

Japanese cities and districts where owners banned foreigners to rent >housing, because foreigners commit crime: all.

Please provide supporting evidence for this claim of "all" housing in Japanese cities and districts being banned to foreigners.
