Seeing as this is Japan, how about using the correct Japanese spelling 'Jinrikisha' 人力車 instead of the Americanized abomination?

Gender aside, Rickshaw pulling/driving is a arduous, demanding, hazardous job.

I'm impressed.

Getting a good amount of exercise, enough money to survive without problems, some online popularity (for those that like it) and promoting the tourism in their city is positive enough. Helping also to change outdated concepts about gender roles is a nice extra.

We went for a jinrikisha ride with the kids the other day, and we were surprised that the puller was a young girl. She told us she is a college student and does this as a part time job during weekends, besides the money helps her staying fit, improve conversational skills, and practice English because more than half of the customers are foreigners. And she also told us that this summer was hell...

This is a great article. I often go to Asakusa, and have seen a few women rickshaw pullers, to my complete surprise and respect. Appreciate the details in this article. Had no idea a million yen a month was possible. Go you gals! This is what happens when true equality takes place. It is inspirational!

Seems like subjugation to me.

How so? The women in the article sound like they wanted to and chose to do it, and enjoy it.

I would not get on rickshaw pulled by fellow human being in 21st century. Just can't feel comfortable doing so.

Why not? They are doing it willingly as paid employees. What makes you uncomfortable about that?

The most popular drivers make over 1 million yen a month, three times the national average, Tokyo Rickshaw said, adding that less than 10 percent of all applicants get offered a job.

Especially If they're making OVER a million a month-

Shet, I'll join them! For that amount per month, happy to quit my job and do it.

Wow!! I watched a long video on YT about a month ago about this, there was a beautiful young lady named Rie-chan pulling the rickshaw. She is so captivating in every thing she does. It is great other young ladies also want to do this and I hope they are all successful.
