If only this technology was available in Olympus's heyday, there would have been enough power generated for the entire nation for several years.

This truly is the future, though so few recognize it now; I only know as some of my graduate students are involved in related research. Two major approaches are involved: breaking down the lignin to access the glucose; and bioengineering microbes to process it. Today's namagomi is tomorrow's fuel - though certainly not in battery form.
