“I figured out that I was spending four figures on just carbonated drinks and Pepsi Max,” she said.

Gosh! Carbonated drinks and Pepsi Max! Maybe Wadsworth should extend the "no buy year"! A "no buy lifetime" might be a good idea.

North America is very consumer-focused and there’s too much waste

Make that consumption-focused. And greed-focused. With the obvious outcomes.

Not tempted at all.

I recently figured out how much it cost me to make my morning coffee. It's decent quality coffee (600 yen per 180 ml) that is ground at the shop. My metal filter device will drip it nice and slow, taking about 10 minutes, while I make breakfast. Yes, it tastes great. The price for a 350ml cup? 70 yen.

I calculated that if I were to rely on Starbucks or any other coffee counter instead for a coffee that wouldn't taste as good and for which I would need to stand around and wait, I would need to shell out an extra 100,000 yen or more a year. i'd much rather put that money into a tax-free SP500 ETF. LOL.

And maybe stop being influenced by so-called influencers who are probably vapid consumers who beg for their crxp for free.

If some TikToker exclaims you have to take a picture of Mt Fuji seemingly coming out of a Lawson’s roof, please remember: No, you don’t. You can go explore the Atacama desert in Chile instead.

Independent thought, what a concept.

For health reasons, we stopped alcohol which saved us more than ¥100,000 pa.

Hey, I already did this. I didn't realize it till I read this article. One day I thought, "Do I really need all these post-it notes?" Then I thought, "I have far too many comic books." I stopped buying lollipops, funny coffee cups, and toys. Every month I think of something else I can get rid of. I got a divorce, quit driving and sold the car, sold the TV, too. No more cable bills. Now I'm working on medications. What do I need insulin for? Pretty soon I'll be rich.

Yep, buy less if you can. I'm too old to care about it, but fast fashion is probably the worst.

I buy lots of drinks but Japan is hot and I get thirsty.

No reason for that. When passed away one day, then every year will be my no-buy year, eternally. I think that's more than sufficient.

My advice.

Buy everything you want in order to have a great life.

Live fully now,and make the most of every moment.

As long as you don't harm anyone else, just go for it!

I have to stop buying drinks for women in the bars I frequent. I need to find one with only old or ugly but then what would be the point of going? The alcohol wouldn't even taste the same then.

I do the opposite. I make a list of stuff I want it need to buy for the year. And what I don't, it passes to the next year.

"But when she moved back home after graduating college..."

Back home? Parent's home? Presumably she is not wasting any money on non-essential items such as RENT...
