Up to the end of World War II, Nagoya was closely linked with the Mitsubishi Aircraft Company, who had large assembly lines in the area. (Alas, that close link was why the city with its rich historical heritage was essentially destroyed by USAAF firebombing in 1945.) But since that time, Nagoya is closely linked to Toyota--indeed, many Toyotas built for export are shipped out at the Port of Nagoya. Given that link, that's why Nagoya has probably the highest ownership of automobiles in Japan.
