TV commercial of the week: Gin no sara sushi delivery shop

By Yoko Kurose

Now this ad is a challenge to figure out.

It starts off with a young man flirting with a young woman. Suddenly, they are menaced by a dog. The man hides behind the woman. First she throws her high-heeled shoes at the dog. That has no effect. Next, she tosses her bra pads. However, the dog still does not go away. Then she washes her face with some water in a drum near her and her face changes into man’s face. She/he throws her wig at the dog which has had enough and runs off.

She (he) asks the man behind her (him) if he is OK. The man, still surprised, says “I’m OK, thank you.”

At which point we learn that this is a commercial for Gin no sara sushi delivery shop.

Some of the comments on YouTube: “It’s quite humorous,” “I’m going to order from Gin no sara, "The dog is cute,” and “The man flirting with her is a good actor."

That was hilarious.

Not that hard to figure out, is it? Tho' rather crude in its message: Our fish is pure.

This was funny, and it's nice to see some originality coming back to the moribund Japanese advertising market. If I see another commercial featuring AKB48, I'll be the one throwing my shoes--at the TV!

The others in this series (also on YouTube) are pretty funny too...

Thumbs up to the agency selling this concept to the client and pulling it off! Too many times have I dealt with conservative management minds not willing to take risks. Now I'll always remember this unknown sushi shop : )

This is creative?

Now, the issue is whether consumers will associate this ad with the sushi delivery shop. There have been ads that became famous; yet consumers did not associate it with what the ad was trying to sell. Like recently that famous Super Bowl ad featuring the kid Darth Vader using The Force on his dad's car - consumers did not connect it with Volkswagen (yes, that was a VW car, if ya don't remember).

this is a nice commercial. made me laugh. no idea what the advertisement was about until the very last seconds. i hate obvious money-grabbing, repetitive brain-washing commercials. of course this one also does some brain-washing, but with a sense of respect, kind of

The other one with the nurse is good too.

Pretty interesting add, to put it mildly. I agree with lostrune that people may not necessarily associate it with the product it's advertising, though.

Anyway, entertaining.

Which makes it even more wonderfully bizarre and funny.
