Correct, but this isn't about being able to charge via USB, but being able to use the same adaptor for any phone. You can't use iPhone adaptor in au or DoCoMo and certainly not vice versa. Trying to standardise all of these has been a nightmare, but there has been progress outside of Japan using micro USB as a "standard". I doubt if Apple will play ball though.

Micro-USB on the unit; sod what the other end is.
That is your universal charger.
But, kudos for trying to come up with a universal plug connection.

Elven-san, My iPhone and iPad both came with chargers in the package.

Apple would never agree to micro-USB. First, they develop Firewire, the competitor to USB. Second, they make so much money out of adapters.

I have always carried a USB cable with me to charge my cellphone. I remember buying this off a 100-yen shop.
And when I bought my smart phone, it had an adapter so I could still use the old USB cable. I'm not sure about other providers' phones, but SoftBank units don't have any charger in the cellphone package.

Apple already has USB charging. Has had so since its initial release.

Apple will simply include a 30pin to Mini USB adaptor with the phone as is permitted under the draft agreement.

Good luck getting apple to agree to it.

Most phones can connect and charge from a USB port. Universal charging has been around for a long time already.

If you ever lose your charger just walk into the nearest hotel or motel. They always have a box full of them.

Japan is so behind. Wireless charging technology is about to go into full swing.
