Because of rampant obesity in North America.

@proxy has a point. Just go to any mall or walk downtown in a major US city. Must be a very large fashion market - somebody makes and designs these clothes for these people.

Mmmm not only that? Some people have naturally muscular, stocky, tall or short bodies, maybe their hips are wider or arms are larger... The point of the demand is that most women do not have the same body as these models, who represent such a small percentage of women in the world. I want to see what some clothes look like on a woman like me, not on a woman who is 6ft and 49kg. Thank u, next.

You don't need to have the same body as these models. Most women don't have the same face as the models being cast, so their bodies would matter either way. Most women can't afford to buy their clothes at designer boutiques, so again, doesn't matter since they can go to their local Walmart or Sears and get a 9XL or Size 62 skirt/tent, or jogging suit.

Sure, then why not include unattractive & average/plain looking women - of all sizes- then? Most 'bigger women' aren't as attractive as Candice Huffine or other plus-size models.
Imo, plus-size modeling is still very much about vanity & looking better than the neighbour.
PC bs is still bs.

@Atari The obesity rate in the US is 36% and almost as high in Mexico in Canada and that does not include overweight people. 74% of Americans are overweight, and that doesn't mean people with large bodies by nature. Marketers want to sell to that market. It is a huge public health crisis and it should not be normalized.

Obesity is not 'normal' and should not be celebrated. I'm about 10-20 pounds overweight and I do not expect men's fashions to start promoting guys with pudgy middles. I know I am out of shape and I am not deluded enough to expect people to think it's sexy.

I used to be the fattest guy in class up to about age 15-16. I ate too much, didn’t exercise, drank soda, etc. If I were born today, I guess I’d blame everyone except myself (my parents, my genes, my friends, etc). In fact, my parents had to ask my relatives back in the US to send clothes (especially jeans) that will fit me. If I’d have grown up in the US, I guess I would look at this with a different lens.

We live in the age of blaming everyone else except oneself for problems we have. Now the world must be inclusive and accepting of everyone, everything no matter what it is - well, as long as it's a liberal leaning agenda. Being a fat slob is now called plus sized. I can't wait for the petition to have a plus sized super hero for the next Marvel/DC movie.
