Women use smartphone games to lure men into paying for their food expenses

The number of Japanese women who are struggling with food and living expenses is reported to be on the rise. While most women try to increase their earnings by taking on an extra part time job or even changing occupations completely, there are others who resort to some rather unscrupulous methods. One such method is to use interactive smartphone games to trick men into buying them dinner to reduce the burden of their food costs.

All the men out there, brace yourselves as what is about to unfold will leave you squirming.

“I often get the men I meet on the Internet to treat me to a meal at a fancy restaurant,” boasts nursery school teacher Ms A (28) who entered into one of Tokyo’s unauthorized nursery schools six years ago. Her income per month after tax is around 130,000 yen. She lives by herself in a small 30-year-old apartment that is located about 10 minutes away from Shinjuku subway. Although Ms A is a woman of striking beauty, she has surprisingly been single for three years.

With reference to her monthly outgoings, she comments: “I’ve got a lot of expenses, so things are really quite tough. My rent is 50,000 yen, my smartphone bill 15,000 yen, and the heat and electricity bill is 7,000 yen. In addition to this, I’m repaying 20,000 yen in student loans each month. The amount left for food is 30,000 yen. Needless to say, I’ve got no room to put any savings aside.”

Ms A admits that to supplement her modest food budget, she uses online games to befriend unsuspecting men in hopes that they will buy her dinner. Sadly, there are many reports online of women in the same situation using this method. But why does it work so well? Ms A explains how she does it: “First while playing the game, you message some of the male players asking a game related question like ‘What’s the best way to fight?’”

According to Ms A, as the conversation progresses, the next step is to make the content of the messages more private-orientated by saying something like, “Work's been quite hectic recently. I can’t remember the last time I took a break from it all.”

She further explained that by skillfully ascertaining information about the occupation and age of the man she is messaging, it’s possible to get a clear idea of their worth. Although Ms A’s actual occupation is a nursery school teacher, to increase the chances of being invited out, she admitted to preying on male fantasies by posing as a nurse.

Once her intended target seems interested, she furthers the conversation by saying, “I was supposed to be meeting a friend this Sunday but she cancelled on me at the last minute.” To this most men usually respond, “What about the two of us going out for dinner?” Ms A will slyly reply, “I’d love to have dinner with you but… to be honest… financially it’s a bit difficult for me at the moment.” The man’s reply is often something along the lines of, “No need to worry. It’s my treat.”

The whole process usually takes around 15 minutes. Using this method, she commented that her success rate is about three men per month.

I wonder if Mrs. A stuffs her face with food when she is on these three dates to ensure that she gets a gut-full, when the guys are not looking. If she did it would be like the traditional Japanese horror story, and recent movie, called "The Split Faced Woman."

Hey 'Ms. A', I recommend you supplement your food allowance by switching to old-style keitai. (Not as 'cool' - though neither is deception - and only 'bout 3000 yen a month! :-)

She is playing the interactive games for satisfying her stimulation, not for fulfilling her appetite. I think that it is dangerous to earn easy money. Be carefull.

Virgo, I don't think anyone said it was just a Japan thing. Indeed, men take women out all the day - and vice versa - but this isn't what this is about. This is about pathetic women sneaking "dates" so they can get a nice dinner out of a guy whom they have no intention to date.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Why are people acting so falsley "aghast"? So she gets a few meals? In every country women get free meals and more from men. It's been happening for centuries. It is NOT a Japanese thing. Men take women out all over the world in hopes of getting lucky. Sometimes she actually likes the guy and things happen. In America women want to shop more and most of them in my local watering hole don't pay for men's meals or drinkls. This is so not a big deal.

Oh my, a human is being manipulative to gain something for themselves. Stop the press!

Just because it's using a smartphone doesn't make it news. Japanese media at the moment really seems to be attacking smartphones as if they're the blame for everything wrong in Japanese society. I guess it's easy to find a scapegoat rather than admit that actually, Japanese society's entire history is broken.

Perhaps the only surprising thing here is that the girl isn't using her 'charms' to make money from what men really want. Sure, there are women using men all over the world, but couple the deviousness of the girls in this article with the fact that they are Japanese, and it just doesn't shock me at all. Japanese women are soul-less creatures. Sirens.

I think she forgot to mention her 50000 yen/month shopping habit, it's tough being a Tokyo girl.

ee: food stealing?

Well in the same time, men in Japan are the sole responsible for this situation having supported and promoted patriarchy in Japan until today.

How so? I speak to many men and they are more than happy to have a wife with a FT job and help out at home. The women? Nope. WOMEN raise the men here to be the way they are.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

She sells herself for three meals. What else are they offering these days for an extra fee? Using this method, she commented that her success rate is about three men per month. Why not three meals instead of men is mentioned here is beyond my imagination ;)

I reckon the men are just as bad. I bet of the 'three guys a month' Ms A nabs with this trick she beds at least one of them and at least one more comes back for another try. The guys are banking on a little fun too. People have been using the internet to hook up since it was invented. The courtship ritual requires a date at the very least.

Her ''apartment'' must be a room in guest house for that price!

"Rather sickening that women are like this here but not surprising. I really do feel for the men here who seem to be so clueless they don't get how nasty some of these women are."

Wait a minute, she went to college and ended up with a 130,000 yen a month job?

Yep. That's pretty much the going rate for women who work in these places. They don't demand more because they know they won't get it. Plus, not like its a job for life. Find a poor guy, get married, quit! Which is exactly WHY these places pay so horrible. Add in the 1.3 million salary cap for working wives and... you have single women needing more money but can't get jobs to pay them what they deserve because so many others out there are willing to work for peanuts so they can be covered by their husband's pension and health care.

And yep, probably a tandai girl due to the job choice.

Rather sickening that women are like this here but not surprising. I really do feel for the men here who seem to be so clueless they don't get how nasty some of these women are.

Props to her though, at least she's living on her own, unlike many other parastite adult kids.

10 minutes from Shinjuku station? 50k rent? That apartment must be a walkable closet!

"The number of Japanese women who are struggling with food and living expenses is reported to be on the rise."

Strange I thought we were told that Abenomics was the solution for everything. Stokes are high but some japanese citizen can't eat properly? And I am sure she is super happy to hear about the 2% inflation that the government is seeking and the increase of the consumption tax next year.

"Her income per month after tax is around 130,000 yen"

130,000 yen in Tokyo? Well good luck with that!

" there are others who resort to some rather unscrupulous methods."

Tells a lot about the more and more strange developing mentality of people in this country. Sad...

"she went to college and ended up with a 130,000 yen a month job"

Yes it's a japanese women living in Japan. Here a woman regardless of her qualification is discriminated in the job market and actually the arrogant old farts leading this country still believe that she is not supposed to work anyway.

Iam sure that most dinner dates go smoothly, but surly there is going to be one guy that he thinks it is MORE than a dinner date, and bugger me, next day in the news papper "Venerable single lady was raped last night". looks like Mc Donalds profits are going to go up as well, so cant be all that bad!

who entered into one of Tokyo’s unauthorized nursery schools six years ago.

Which in translation means a private nursery school and not a public one.

Tessa, the fact that she graduated from college and is working at an unlicensed nursery school,

There is a huge difference between unlicensed (illegal) and private.

my smartphone bill 15,000 yen

Its amazing that whenever you hear a story about someone struggling to get by, they have a phone bill of 15,000 yen to 20,000 yen. Often its a couple that are paying 15,000 yen each. I have seen this kind of thing on TV several times.

I guess stupid is as stupid does.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Sure she just gets food from these guys.. Yep and she just talks with them over dinner.

Sounds like another LOOP-HOLE in the big anti P law here.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

I thought dinner dates were something you only did once you are already sleeping together? Otherwise they're just setting themselves up to be unpaid male-escorts. I guess that's what happens when men don't put a value on themselves or their time.

How can Japan be a patriarchy when the men work so hard just to throw the spoils at random women?

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

Who pays 15,000yen on phonebills these days? Line, skype, free phonecalls, plenty of data allowance. Standard cost is 7000yen, and even cheaper deals are available out there.

Granted her income is poverty level low, but that 8000yen she is wasting on her phone every month could have bought the 3 dinners she tricked some guy into buying her. And then she has to put up with a guy that she doesnt have any interest in for the length of the dinner...

2 ( +2 / -0 )

I think many commentators are missing out on the big picture here which is

The number of Japanese women who are struggling with food and living expenses is reported to be on the rise.

Why is this? Well it's because too many people believe that you can somehow promote economic growth with a weak yen. Or that a strong and valuable yen is somehow bad for Japan. Trashing your currency means you ultimately have to pay more in that unit for even basic necessities. Ad to make people suffer this way is wrong on all levels.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Sad. I am baffled why she would continue to pull this, and not be able to find a boyfriend after so many different outings. I find myself in the opposite dilemma. An ample sum of money from a steady job and living below my means. Yet alone.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Doesn't have enough money for food but has enough money for a smart phone?

Yeah, and Y15,000/month at that. For one person? Maybe she needs to switch carriers.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Tessa, the fact that she graduated from college and is working at an unlicensed nursery school, means she went to one of these junior colleges that will accept anybody, and the level of education is really low. As an aside, a nursery school has just opened here in town and its hours are 7am to 2 am! And I doubt if the poor workers will get any extra money for working such long hours!

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

"The number of Japanese women who are struggling with food and living expenses is reported to be on the rise..." @Souldave. This and the title is what I was responding to. You are responding to Miss A. I am sure there is a Miss B, C, etc.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

That said... unless its a proper date - that you invite a woman to in very certain hopes, if a woman doesnt atleast offer to have a drink on her at the next place... its probably will end there... I tend to think of a relationship as a fair game for both sides.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

She should change jobs... convenient store pays more...

1 ( +1 / -0 )

What?! Women using men to pay for things? Say it ain't so! How shocking...

14 ( +14 / -1 )

This is why Miss A is single. She does not know how to find someone for honest reasons. She uses people. And guess what girls. Guys can see through this.

I met a lot of this type of girl when I first got here. I have a good job and that makes you a target for this type.

I married a wonderful girl who did not care about my job, she cared more about my creative passions outside work. She does not care if we eat at our cheap local Indian place or somewhere expensive. In fact she usually prefers somewhere comfortable over expensive. And above all, she is my partner.

If Miss A learns to be a loving and caring person, care about the nature and personality of the guy over his profile, she may some day find someone who can share life with her and make the future a lot better.

If not, I think a lot of these women are headed for dark times ahead. You can only use people while you are young and beautiful. But in Japan that expiration date is very young and the next girl will have the edge. Better learn to build a career, find a meaningful relationship or plan for poverty ladies.

13 ( +15 / -2 )

Although Ms A is a woman of striking beauty, she has surprisingly been single for three years.

I guess she must either be dumb or just not a nice person.

10 ( +12 / -2 )

No biggie here. Scavenging for money/food/drinks isn't just a female thing. I've known quite a few men willing to take financial advantage of strangers as well as their friends.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Tessa. You would be amazed at how low a lot of people's salaries are these days. Especially nursery school teachers. I do not see a big problem with this. Who knows? Maybe the girls will meet someone they actually like.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

I think I met her last week...

16 ( +18 / -2 )

samwatters - "The amount left for food is 30,000 yen. Needless to say, I’ve got no room to put any savings aside". Certainly looks like she has enough for food, by her own calculations.

And yes, nursery school teachers earn a pittance here.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Doesn't have enough money for food but has enough money for a smart phone?

16 ( +19 / -3 )

Tessa - YES . Nursery school teachers salaries are around the lowest in the country, despite having some of the longest contractual hours and the least holidays.

This article is a bit silly though. There have always been women around, in every country, who use men for money - whether its food, clothes, or designer handbags. Its nothing new, nor exclusive to Japan.

13 ( +15 / -2 )

Seems pretty desperate to me to spend all that time and energy on a fake date, including presumably having a phony conversation and the like, all for a meal. What these women really want is cash, not food. Sounds more to me like these women are lonely and just want to spend time with folks and hopefully meet Mr. Right.
