"After an accelerated boot camp that lasted just 14 days,...."

They needed to rush men to the fleet but just two weeks in boot camp wasn't enough time to prepare them adequately for service. It's a testament to the courage and work ethic of so many sailors during WWII that our Navy ultimately crushed the Japanese in the Pacific theater.
