i guess it would but made by the goverment smells like propaganda to me. And how about what Mao has done to his own people? no film about that?

how is Mao, or the record of the Chinese government relevant in this case?

"...while many Japanese conservatives are disgruntled over what they say are exaggerated stories of its brutality during World War II."

Awwwwwww! Come on! We were't THAT brutal! It's not fair!! Okay, okay... so you have actual photographs and some old Japanese Imperial soldiers have come forward and apologized on their own for what they did in the slaughter, but that really doesn't mean we were that bad, does it? Can't you show the Japanese troops teaching a kid kanji instead of them bayonetting a child?

Anyway, in all seriousness, I look forward to seeing this movie and just weighing it out in my head. Been to Nanjing and the museum there, and have seen people (including a former Japanese soldier) speak on the horros and atrocities, and it's very sad. I have doubts it'll clear the Japanese film board, though, so I'll have to get a copy elsewhere.

Whaaaaat? China using a movie for political propaganda? Never! How could you even think that? My my I think you may have to be sent to a re-education camp just to make sure you understand the greatness of Mao!

I can not believe that someone would even think that! My what ever made you think that China would try and use the film to spread their vision of history? Didn't you know that the Communist never fired back against the evil Japanese.

Nanking the money making propaganda story that will never go away. The Chinese will milk this until they get the Japanese to pay them with everything they want.

Do not know about anyone else, but I would rather burn out my eyes with a hot poker than see that trash of a movie.

Since the film industry as whole in mainland China own by the government, whatever Chinese movies qualifies as propaganda. By the way: do you cry so hard, if the Japanese make a movie about Hiroshima? Do you protest every August when Hotaru no Haka aired on NHK? Oh, no? "We were aggressors, therefore we suffered more?"

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Someone had to tell the world not all Japanese are immersed with kawaii mass cultural rubbish, we like to kill, rape and pillage like any other men around the world. If this film makes the Nazis in Schindler's List look like the girl scouts, then big ups to Lu!

I wonder how "The Tiananmen Square Massacre" will do in China...

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Sarge- I think it will LOFR well. ror.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Every one coming to the opening will be sent to a re-education camp. So they can think about their mistaken idea that China is a bad place to live. China is great china is fun, china loves you......Love big brother hate everything else.....

Mao was a real nice guy that just wanted to spread happy happy joy joy Democratic ideals.......Trust China.....

Japan doesn't have much room because they have been "middled". Japan can't very well admit to the atrocities on Nanjing because they would have to give up the victim card they play every year regarding Hiroshima.

Another reason is the emperor wasn't convicted of any war crimes. The reason the Germans could distance themselves from the Horrors of the concentration camps, is because it was done in the name of Hitler and the Nazis. A disgraced man and a disgraced party. Japan can't very well distance themselves from their own emperor, so their only real choice is to pretend nothing happened.

But this film should do wonders for Japans reputation in China.

Say Hello to JoeBigs, the one-trick Pony. Come on over to Tianjin, Joe. It's real nice here. I'll even buy you a nice big bottle of baijiu. It's ok...China doesn't bite.

News Flash-Atrocties in WWII Happened...some were even committed by Japanese. Defending them is pathetic.

Strong opening? The government just has to raise an eyebrow and people have to goto the movie, they dont have a choice in China.

Japan really shouldn't hind this past, some people claim it never happened.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

When and where is the Japanese premiere of this movie? What?! It won't be shown here?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The government just has to raise an eyebrow and people have to goto the movie, they dont have a choice in China.

Is that what you honestly think?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Oh yeah China, rip open more healing wounds! Seems the Chinese government needs some more anti-Japanese supporters! Way to go!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Uh, Nanking is a wound that never healed, Dr Jones, primarily because the Japanese continue to pretend it never happened. Ever been to the museum at Yaskuni?

What is with this, "us vs. them mentality" anyway? How hard is it for people to grasp both that the Imperial Army was Nazi-level brutal during WWII, AND that the Chinese Gov't sucks. They don't cancel eachother out you know.

The three monkey with hands over mouth, eyes and ears, respectively, I always thought of as what a saint does. But a new revelation is presenting itself in that people can be trained to see, hear and speak no evil, even if it exists. School bullying and the lack of change by the school authorities in Japan is the begining of this see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil mentality. Even with history. Then again they know but just do not wish to see, hear nor speak about it.

Remember, Jackie Chan thinks it's good for Chinese citizens to be controlled.... Always hate something besides the Chi-Coms.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

It was necessary to keep the drum beat high! The nanjiang massecre should always always keep that in mind!As China is getting stronger and stronger it's the right time to make the Japanese understood China takes this 'debt' seriously!

Nationalisms was the deriving force of China in the past 20 years thats why china shall never doomed like the soviet union's fate! China now managed to have a strong leadership and stable was thanks to nationalism. By the way chinese people loves nationalisms and it was the main subject of Chinese community were enthusiastic with! Everytime were some kind of mishaps done by a foreign country like teh bombing of Chinese embassy in Belgrade, the EP3 hijacking incident or the Yasukuni crisis caused by Koizumi and the disruption of Beijiang Olympic torch run will drawing strong nationalisms from all the Chinese community, dont be surprised by jackie Chan's remarks he was also nationalistic! Even overseas Chinese in western countries supporting and loyalty to the Chinese government nationalistic approach. That was China always!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Japan gave Chinese people a very negative views and impressions in the last 100 plus years was the cause always erupting Chinese nationalisms. It was definately not Chinese faults but japan's her own as a trustworthy country.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Bamboohat:Japan can't very well distance themselves from their own emperor, so their only real choice is to pretend nothing happened.

That was the cause of always high tensions in east asia! And thats why higher military spending by China!Nobody can blaming China for this but who caused this from the begining!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

But the film now appears to have the firm support of the Chinese government...........

Yes of course that was necessary,it was indeed showing the Chinese government wasnt appeasing japan anymore,a message need to signal the people in order to prevent any uncontrolled outraging like 05!

Bamboohat:Japan can't very well distance themselves from their own emperor, so their only real choice is to pretend nothing happened.

Of course, in the same way, the Chinese government/Chinese people often pretend nothing happened in the last 60 years in their own country, because they can't seperate themselves from their own government. I see no difference really.

it was indeed showing the Chinese government wasnt appeasing japan anymore,

Of course they're appeasing Japan. They've been appeasing Japan since Deng Xiaoping, and they'll continue to do so for the time being. This movie will make Chinese shed a couple tears and feel angry for a week, and then they'll go on with life as if nothing happened. Chinese nationalism always ocurs in short, strong burts, and then dissapates into nothing.

JoeBigs you are right how could i question the great china the waterboarding oops i mean the re-education has worked :p.

For all the reactive posters, i do not question the nanking massacre but the objectiveness of the movie, if an objective filmmaker would make a movie about it i would not mind. it will probably be Like all those old WW2 movies that showed every german as evil monsters.

although i would like to see a version by miike takahashi (audition, ichi the killer) that would probably make Hellrazor look like the teletubbies

0 ( +0 / -0 )

if an objective filmmaker would make a movie about it i would not mind.

What do you consider objective? Non-Chinese only?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

LOL state approved political movies from China? Intersting for Chinese not so interesting for rest of the world. I bet Smith would like this though.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

too bad the movie was not made by joint chinese-japanese filmmakers so it would be more accurate. chinese interests will undoubtedly overexaggerate their victimhood and increase anti-japanese bias.

this could have been a joint chinese-japanese effort, but now it becomes a propaganda movie with one-sided pro-china bias.

a missed opportunity.

Forget this movie, Germany has produced 'John Rabe' which has won a film prize. UNFORTUNATELY, THE MOVIE HAS BEEN BANNED IN JAPAN. And I thought China was the major Communist country in East Asia. My, my, my. It seems China isn't the only one who wants to hide things from its people. Fancy that, a western country portraying Japan in a bad light!

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

UNFORTUNATELY, THE MOVIE HAS BEEN BANNED IN JAPAN. Above was quoted from wikipedia (via a Chinese news site). But who knows?

this could have been a joint chinese-japanese effort

You've got to be kidding, right? I'd welcome it, but I won't hold my breath.

The brutal scene inside the movie will impressing young Chinese people and of course that does matter and that will shaping how they see the world and japan! It was a complete ignorant to see the impact of future world! This kind of movie cannot be Chinese-japanese cooperation because that will white washing the accuracy of japanese brutality! By the way not just Japan has to be blame, the US and UK which has done nothing to help Nanking should also be blamed and seeded in young generation peoples mind!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The movie is a message to younger generations that we have a long march ahead when dealing with outside world, a struggle that was necessary to become a new superpower and Chinese should never compromise anymore like those generation in early twentieth century and pickup the arms to fight! This movie will be a milestone of Chinese ideologies! Yes dont let the wounds healed, only the frustrations will made China driving faster and stronger from the darkest chapter of modern Chinese history!

I think the western world better ignore the consequences of 'Nanking'! When they are concerning China, much things has to be learn!

Terrikus at 10:07 AM JST - 28th April Say Hello to JoeBigs, the one-trick Pony.

Actually I am more of a two or three trick pony..No no make that a poodle....oh wait Chinese like to eat dog, reverse that last one I am a pony...

Terrikus at 10:07 AM JST - 28th April Come on over to Tianjin, Joe.

Thank you but until the present brutal regime is removed I shall not visit.

Terrikus at 10:07 AM JST - 28th April It's real nice here. I'll even buy you a nice big bottle of baijiu. It's ok...China doesn't bite.

I would agree with you, China and the Chinese people are very nice. But the present regime is....dare I say....not that nice...

I heard of baijiu, it is a bit strong for my taste, but thank you anyways.

Terrikus at 10:07 AM JST - 28th April News Flash-Atrocties in WWII Happened...some were even committed by Japanese. Defending them is pathetic.

I agree with you, all countries commit atrocities in war, they happen. It is the way of war.....History is sometimes changed by those that win. Things are removed and things are added...

In the case of Nanking (or Nanjing if you like), that is a story filled with truths, half-truths, propaganda, lies and mistakes by all parties involved.

For China and it's propaganda machine to come out with this latest propaganda movie is just that, propaganda.

China has been changing itself and remaking it's history for the last 40 years. China has slowly become nationalistic and I believe that one day war will break out. China will try and do what it has never done, and it will fail.

Movies like this fill the minds of the young and uneducated with feelings of revenge. But this usually happens when a nation comes out of a cocoon. The sad thing is China will lose this war and go back into it's self imposed cocoon.

If you do not think I am correct look at some of the posts made by some here.

CZAR202030 at 11:39 PM JST - 28th April I think the western world better ignore the consequences of 'Nanking'! When they are concerning China, much things has to be learn!

Look at his remarks, he is filled with hate.

CZAR202030 at 11:34 PM JST - 28th April The brutal scene inside the movie will impressing young Chinese people and of course that does matter and that will shaping how they see the world and japan!

Reason is lost, only hate is in those lungs.

State promoted nationalism......Reminds me of the Nazis just before they moved against Czechoslovakia. I suspect that China will make it's move and nationalism will be the motivator. I just wonder what nation they will attack.......

That is why I say Japan needs to take all their business and move it to Vietnam.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Acknowledgement and reconciliation need to take place, but at some point, you have to move on. I get the impression that some of the most vocal and vitriolic protesters are so far removed from this incident, historically and even through blood (none of their relatives were killed in Nanking) that the protestations seem pretty hollow.

How long can you wallow in history? Why not work towards reshaping a better future and improving relations? Unbelievably, alot of this seems as much about "saving face" as it is about the needless loss of life -- a despicable concept in and of itself, aspects of which I can't stand, but that's for another discussion.

Everyone should watch it and make up their own mind.

Well, see, I live in China, and truth be told, while his type exists, I often don't run into it. Remember those 'riots' against the west in China during the torch rely for the Olympics? Believe it or not, they were relatively small, and people still poured into the foreign supermarkets and stores on a daily basis. Chinese love their country, but not so many are so vocal or take such confrontational stances in their words such as the poster noted.

Actually the truth is, many Chinese are all words, but when it comes down to act, they usually don't. So you might have some Chinese poster heralding the doom of the west if they don't 'beware the Dragon', and the same said poster is likely quite the timid person in actuality. Behold the power of Internet Anonymity.

But lets really be honest with ourselves here. Ever read the comments of posters at say foxnews.com or any other 'patriotic' American website. You'd be surprised how similar these kinds of comments are. The difference is, the U.S. is the one invading countries at the moment, China isn't.

Nope, made by a chinese without state supervision would be OK then only his personal convictions would be imprinted on the film.

"Demonising your enemy is insulting yourself," Lu says.

I look forward to seeing this movie, hopefully in Japan.
