If you live in Japan, you’re probably not a stranger to dining out alone. Instead of going out and spending money, why not simulate the same premium experience of dining out with your own personal grill?
This solo grill machine by Thanko is perfect for days when you don’t feel like dining out but still crave grilled meat and veggies. This grill was specially designed to have sloped, corrugated plates that drain excess fat. The material is also made to maintain high temperatures and produces a minimal amount of smoke. It’s easy to clean, small enough to store in your cupboard and comes in three heat settings. Whether you grill chicken, seafood or steaks feel like you’re in a restaurant from the comfort of your dining room.
Priced at 6,980, you can purchase it on the Thanko website.

I wish, oh how I wish, we could have that in the US. I wanna go back to Japan.

I wish it was a lot cheaper so I'd buy 4 and have my family and I all using one.

Electric hot plates with a water tray are really good at suppressing smoke, a key feature for bbqing indoors. Unfortunately the amount of heat is insufficient for top quality grilling. It will work if you preheat the grate for fifteen minutes or longer, but the temperature will drop 50C or more as soon as you put food on. It is unlikely to hit 200C thereafter.

I use my air fryer oven to grill the meat and vegetables.

Exactly. Electric hot plates work for takoyaki and sandwiches where it's not important how long it takes to sink the heat into the food. For yakiniku, though, you really want a gas powered one (they are readily available, look for "yakimaru").

I think this gadget popped up this time last year too. I'll pass. Thank you very much. No need for it dawn' the Toon
Nothing beats charcoal grills. Even air fryer, why eye pet.

You can only give an opinion on a garget you have used and tested. You wouldn't buy a car from a man who does not drive.
The air fryer oven does great grills including steaks, and grilled vegetables. Charcoal grills need to be used outside. They kill people indoors.
By the time you have a charcoal grill up and running I have already finished and are sitting down to eat my yakiniku and drink my sake. Did one last weekend.

If you are talking air fryers, we have one at home. Built into our cooker fully fitted western style kitchen. It works ok. A bit pointless and redundant. Just another meeh gadget.
Charcoal just tastes nicer. And a nice full bodied red wine hues better with yakiniku. If you are talking beef. Sake goes well with sushi, of which you are pretty good at making by your own testimonies.
You never know. I might.

Air Fryer’s are great, oh yeah. My partner made crisps last night with that method you told me, they were lovely, we really enjoyed them.
If I want yakiniku I go locally as there’s tons of places around here, you see.

For the limited functionality of a hot plate for yakiniku the price seems not justified.

Iwatani make a mini gas grill called "robata-yaki" with a regular wire grate that works off cassette gas, the cheap aerosol-sized gas cans you can buy anywhere. It gets hotter than an electric hotplate will. It will produce way more smoke though, so you are best using it under a kitchen extractor. This is dead easy if you have an IH hob, because IH hobs are flat.
Minigrills that work off gas cannisters or cassette gas are better than the product introduced here because you can take them to the beach or camping.

They are also not the worst thing to have in emergencies, in case the power goes out after an earthquake or a flooding. (And that's not a far-fetched theoretical scenario, we have actually been in that situation a few years ago.)

If you have to buy this then it’s time to go out and make some friends!
