AQUOS K Android flip phone: No touchscreen, no Google Play

Nostalgia is strong with this one.

Yes, feature and flip phones are still widely available in Japan (not huge sellers these days), but we’re pretty sure this is first time anyone’s bothered to shoehorn Google’s Android OS into a device that doesn’t even have a touchscreen.

Manufactured by Sharp under their Aquos brand, the Android 4.4 (KitKat) Aquos K is equipped with a quad-core CPU and 13-megapixel camera, but, as mentioned, it does lack a touchscreen - though the four-way pointer area uses Sharp’s TOUCH CRUISER technology...on a tiny little square...to scroll and move a cursor on the screen.

au KDDI, Japan' second-largest mobile carrier, will offer the phone for ¥49,680; customers are given the option to pay for the phone outright or have the cost amortized over the length of of a 1 or 2-year contract. Surprising exactly no one, the phone will be available at a discount to citizens 55 or older.

Surprising us, in a way, and yet not at the same time, the Aquos K cannot access Google Play. Which says a lot.

Specs for the Aquos K from au KDDI Size: 51 × 113 × 16.9mm Weight: 128g Colors: Red/Black, White, Gold/Black Connectivity: 3G, 4G-LTE, Bluetooth 4.0, Mobile Wallet, Infrared Port, Full Seg Digital TV, Wi-Fi, Network Tethering More: Water/Dust proof, impact resistant

Sharp had another Android flip phone several years back. I don't remember the model but it was a Softbank one...

007SH - it was a cool phone, but the battery life was beyond abysmal. I bought one off a lady who complained that she would not have enough battery to last her the morning commute to work!

But it has a great camera, and at the time the processor was 'adequate'. Was a good phone to take snowboarding because the screen is protected, its waterproof, and takes nice pictures. But at lunchtime i would need to swap batteries!

Not bad I suppose if you just want a basic telephone. I like the design and color schemes.
